Ryabcool: B1tch please! Nigeria and Russia maintained close relations during the Military era. Russia wanted to make Nigeria a Communist State like they attempted to do with Cuba, hence Russia was allowed to ship in Marxism books and items which furthered the cause of a Socialist and eventual Communist Movement. Socialist principles and ideals actively promoted through media outlets in Nigeria. This happened the most during the Murtala era. You better read your damn history books boy! undecided
And the CIA made sure that Murtala paid dearly for it.

This is the trademark of this irresponsible and utterly unserious administration: it never accepts responsibility for its own errors and failures!

What has the US got to do with this failed strategy of under-table deals to frustrate our unity?

I hope Nigeria will get rid of this administration at the next electoral opportunity in 2015. Let our best lead us,not some mice-heads!

BTT:

Yes actually.

There are sanctions on Russia right now that disables her economy from selling arms.

I stand to be corrected.

America can huff and puff at Russia it can't stop it from selling arms, by the way Russia too is not exactly Mother Theressa, it can be as spiteful.

Nigeria is full of criminals, from gov; boko and 419's. I will never visit that country, the people of nigeria like to fight one another( boko vs nigerias vs gov), is like law isn't working in that country. I wish my country will stop this criminals by not selling them weapons, they are going to kill ordinary people especially on elections next year

I've read the article and comments....i think there's more to this story because Nigerian govt can't come out to accuse US government without concrete evidence, thats a serious allegation. list of what can come out of this allegations are
1. FG can be sanctioned
2. The US government might decide to back the opposition party to kick out PDP
or worse
pump more money into making sure the country divide.
although the story sounds far-fetched but at this point I don't know what to believe anymore. :-XI've read the article and comments....i think there's more to this story because Nigerian govt can't come out to accuse US government without concrete evidence, thats a serious allegation. list of what can come out of this allegations are

sunnshyn: President Goodluck Jonathan, ok. But wait I have a question sir. You people were desperate after America and co refused selling arms to us and so you 'cargoed' almost $10m in cash to SA without informing them(SA govt) first?

2) In your desperation, you couldn't find any other means of transfer except using Ayo's Jet?

3) When you realized that America wasn't going to sell, who did you tell? None of the citizen you swore to protect heard about it, if indeed you think we need not know intially, why then are you telling us now?

Even if all you have alledged is true, don't your excellency think that you and your cohorts have shamelessly acted in an embarrassing manner which may further severe our relationships with SA govt?

In case you didn't know sir, Nigerians are treated with disdain and disgust here in SA because of issues like this. They think we are all criminals, both govt and citizens and so we are avoided like plagues...

Answers to the above questions are needed.

Kai my sister!!!! May God increase your wisdom!! A million likes for you!!

ihedinobi2: I actually find this somewhat believable. I'm pretty sure that buying arms from Russia could severely strain our relationship with America. It may be less severe with China but there is a question of China's own self-interest.

America can block arms trade with another party by threatening either some interest of Nigeria's or some interest of the selling country. It's not like they lack the ability to do so. Some countries can call their bluff but how many really can? And of those who can, what else besides hard currency would it cost Nigeria to buy from them? If the sellers are few, Nigeria's bargaining power drops significantly.

Also, the human rights claim is not unbelievable. We ourselves complain a lot about how the armed forces from the police force all the way up to the intelligence operatives disregard human life and simply use their martial training to mete out any treatment that suits them to people they feel threatened by or simply find intolerable somehow.

Altogether, this is a believable story, I think. Not saying it's absolutely true. That's just what I think.

This make sense.

Intelligence gathering is also about getting connected to several arms dealers and manipulating them, if any country is adept at this, it is the US. The US has means, reach, and influence, and isn't bothered about using such. I believe such reach and influence was deploy in this case to frustrate and embarrass Nigeria.

I have read arguments which seems to suggest that Nigeria should all buy her weapons from Russia This suggestion is simplistic in the sense that Russia companies may not have the every kind of weapon needed by the military, and that is beside making Russia a monopoly in weapon supply to Nigeria.

In the end, Nigeria may have to take her destiny in her own hands and consider investing in more in the defense industry, and also encourage private investors to explore such. We shouldn't be buying weapons from South Africa or any African country for that matter.

Fool, just recently new set of helicopters from russsia were agreed to be sent to Nigeria.

In August Russia and Nigeria signed a large contract for delivery of
helicopters, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the head of Rostec
State Corporation’s delegation at ADEX-2014, Sergey Goreslavsky.
"In August a contract for delivery of a large batch of helicopters to
Nigeria was signed. This refers to significant number of Mi-171Sh
and a few Mi-35M helicopters", - Goreslavsky said.
He added that Mi-171Sh and other versions of Mi-17 helicopter are
in demand in Africa. "Mozambique is interested in these vehicles and
we are going to promote the helicopters at the exhibition held in
Republic of South Africa", - he added.

Seun, I am compelled to make this intervention because the topic of this thread is completely misleading and fits into Boko Haram propaganda that has been associated with APC attack dogs.

The report copied and pasted on this thread was the outcome of an INVESTIGATION by Premium Times and that was why it was originally titled "EXCLUSIVE: Seized $9.3 million: Nigerian officials blame U.S. for secret South Africa arm deal"

Changing the title to
"FG Blames The US For Arms Purchase Scandal" is deceitful and misleading because the report is not the official position of the FG.

Premium Times based the report on its interaction with "high ranking military officers and top administration officials" and NOT the FG of Nigeria.

Honestly this government is shameless!!! Something is terribly wrong somewhere!! They say they chose to do this covertly and that the money was meant for the purchase of arms and helicopters. Now, how did they intend to ferry equipment as large as choppers out of SA without getting spotted by the authorities?? Were they intending to "teleport" the items to Nigeria?? Do they think SA is like Nigeria where ships and tankers just disappear without a trace??

We are yet to hear the last of this story honestly. I think we are just scratching the surface here.

And if I may ask, was it not just recently we were celebrating the acquisition of some state of the art military helicopters by the government to fight the terrorists? Was the US embargo not in effect as at that time which was just about a week ago
Why didn't they approach thesame company in this case if despite US' blockade they were still able to make supplies

This government is a terrible lair!! angry
