North's Over-dependence On Niger Delta Oil Disastrous. by benson81(m): 12:01pm On Oct 13, 2014
OCTOBER 13, 2014 BY GODWIN ISENYO,PUNCH.
A northern-based human rights activist, Malam Shehu Sani, on Sunday said the North would soon drift into disaster if it continued to depend on the proceeds from oil from the Niger Delta region for its economic survival.

Sani, a Kaduna Central senatorial aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 polls, lamented that the northern state governments had not been able to pay salaries of workers without the proceeds from the monthly federal allocation.

He also said 2015 should be a year for change in the northern region.

Sani spoke while addressing pensioners of the Nigerian Railway Corporation at the Kaduna Railway Junction on Sunday.

Sani, who is also the president of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, argued that commoners in the region would continue to wallow in perpetual slavery if they failed to resist money politics and vote credible persons into leadership positions in the region.

He said, “Time has passed that northern states will continue to survive on Niger Delta’s oil money; our states are bereft of any idea that will generate revenue to run our affairs. There is no single state in the North that can pay one month salaries without federal allocation.

“And federal allocation is derived from the sale of Niger Delta oil; this is dangerous and a disaster in the future. Is it possible for someone to be feeding you without controlling you? Our visionary leaders like the late Sir Ahmadu Bello foresee all these dangers, yet our leaders betrayed the course of common good. If today Nigeria is split, the North is in danger.

“We must resist money politics and ensure that only credible people are elected, we must protect our votes, we are only number one in population. We have highest number of senators, governors, local governments, councillors but we have the highest numbers of beggars and oppressed citizens.”

In his response, the leader of the pensioners, Mohammed Muntaka-Aliyu, said their pension was a mere N 5, 000 per month but vowed that they would resist any attempt to monetise politics in view of its negative implications.

Bonny Light crude is too sweet and addictive. The north is in their 4th decade of addiction of crude oil. It might take another 4 decades to ween them off oil. But knowing their mentality, this will be mission impossible until that oil runs dry.

But to be fair, Nigeria is a country addicted to oil. I am singling out the north because unlike the southern regions that have the human resources at various degrees which relatively balances the equation, The north human resources is non-existent. It is not a coincidence that Dangote hired a lot of southerners in critical areas of his business and his company head office is in the south and not north. If nigeria ever breaks up, he wont hesitate to dump the north in a heartbeat. "A mans heart is where his treasure is"

This is purely a Northern /Yoruba company with some few expatriates to provide the much technical input, further analysis will reveal while this company like first Bank thrives 100%on government patronage they can only do well dealing and doing business at a national Level where they can influence the banning , unbanning , closure of businesses of competitors who are not close to the Government in power.

Like First Bank this company has a very short existentialism ,what i mean is that if and when Dangote falls out of favor with the Government that be or is no more on earth ,the company will go the way of Abiola's businesses which were originally funded from the ITT loot and have since gone under ground since the demise of Abiola leaving only the Concord Bookshop where old and outdated books are in stock.

for the meantime people can do business with the company , buy and sell their shares and build with their cement etc. but for me it is just a matter of time before the chickens home come to roost.

if Forbes list was available in the 80s, Abiola would have been mentioned as one of the richest if not the richest african or black man and his businesses would have included Abiola Airlines, Concord Media, ITT etc

Yes, the north would remain addicted to southern oil till it runs dry; then it would go on to develop its own but only after the country is divided; as for now, we must remain as One Nigeria - yeepaaaa! who no like awooof.

Hope you also enjoyed the sarcasm cool
