Come guys, this one 5k, 10k & 35k is just flying around, are those the going rates for websites? Plus do u guys differentiate a Web app from a website? And I thought software was engineered by teams? How come everyone is just saying me/my etc. I don't see how websites/webapps of any standard can be built by a single person. Who does the quality checks? The same person that designed and coded? Common guys!

of all the trash that is flying left and right on this thread, only this remotely makes sense.

How in God's name can an individual design and develop an eCommerce site alone. Alone

You guys are clowns....keep deceiving yourselves.

That is how one individual contacted me, asking for mobile samples of apps, i asked him questions like current infrastructure on ground, the make up of his team, like QA, build release and design (thinking it was a small project that he needed some core group of developers to push his product within a given time)...The guy kept insisting that his project was in the conceptual phase.
I just ended the jist angry angry

you guys don't get it yet, this topic is not about your project. You said your project has been completed, that's fine. Imagine that every other person is trying to hi jack this thread.
The topic is about desperate developers (and clients) who grossly under charge and under pay for projects and end up not delivering.
This has been the latest trend on Nairaland's web master's section. Clients reporting developers for incomplete jobs.
congratulations on your projects' progress.
pls stay on topic.

Design is actually harder than coding.
Many people don't know.
I could code in 3 days, design in 2 weeks.
This is because design is what hits your users first, its your user's first impression.
Web design is a complete course on its own and a full time profession for many.

You are 100% right , i have spent close to a month designing my personal website.

The design idea alone can take up to a week , before you put it into a rough sketch .

Some people need creativity and some Css lessons . lol

No CMS,droopal,joomla,dreamweaver etc bullshiiiiiiiit! [/quote]

Which programming language did u use? php? Why didnt u write and develop ur own programming language? A guy like u left php and developed ruby. That's a correct developer.

If that unresponsive, bad-color combination you have on that garbage called website (dailydevotionalsonline.com) was designed wit a premium wordpress theme, you would have ended up saving ur readers the pain of bad user experience and scrolling left to right to read contents.

I wonder why some of u guys think that building a website from scratch is like going to the moon.

N0nsense!

Hmmm.....well I won't really agree with you 100pecent on this, there are some times when programming a site or developing a module you run into thick errors, sometimes you can just be staring at your codes for days trying to figure out where the error is, infact a slight mistake can result to un pleasant situation, remember what happened to appollo 13 launch. Although I do not dispute the fact that webdesigning can take long period, coupled with an inpatient client. These are reason why I buy templates and redesign except if I won't be doing much backend coding

I can relate with the Op. Nigeria has a huge talent deficit and has lots of people who see IT as salvation from hunger and poverty. I have been a victim of rogue developers not just one, two or three. I have lost more that 500k to them. But I have learnt my lesson the hard way. From experience these are what to look out for.

Motive - What drives him as a person, What is he passionate about, is it the desire to make a quick buck, is he interested in fame, money or leaving a legacy doing something he can attach his name to? This can be derived from interacting with him.

Skill/Talent: It is helpful to know a little about development ... It pays a lot to take your time to study web development a little. because doing so It will arm you with knowledge to really know when a developer is not grounded. It will also help you make better pricing decision for a project. You also get to know how good he is and to what extent. Does his previous job show that he is the kind of person that pays attention to detail. how aware is he of the current technologies available.

His Background :- Run a background check on him, check out his credibility among fellow developers. If possible ask someone deep into IT to vet him.

Finally pay in installments : ... Pay them as the reach certain milestones do not pay them in full. So that encase things go wrong you would not have lost so much. I pay in 3 phases. 20% pre 40% when project reaches 60% completion and remaing 40% when project is 100% completed to my satisfaction.

Moreover after the several setback I have suffered in the hand of Nigerian developers, For my really technical project I now using platforms Like odesk.com to outsource most of my development projects to top development teams and guys in India, Us and Uk in fact where-ever they are around the globe and they deliver speedily and efficiently. I have achieved in 2weeks what I spent 6 months battling with a Nigerian developer.

Till Nigerians developers get their acts together I do not see my self working with any of them soon. Except on minor projects or employing them to manage an already built products.
