Nigeria not in top seeds for Olympics draw

The Beijing 2008 runners-up will have to settle for pot two, while hosts Brazil join Argentina and Mexico in pot one
Nigeria have missed out on pot one for the 2016 Olympic draw billed for April 14, 2016 at the Maracana.

Defending champions Mexico are named among the top seeds, along with 2008 men’s football champions Argentina, Japan and host nation Brazil, who will automatically be drawn in Group A.

The ranking is weighted so that recent performances play a more prominent role, and a bonus is given to those nations who finished their qualifying competition as continental champions.

And despite winning the African U23 Championship in Senegal, the Dream Team VI are in Pot Two, along with Korea Republic, Honduras while Iraq take the remaining slot.

With this, Samson Siasia’s lad could face either hosts Brazil – a side they defeated 1-0 in a recent friendly game, Argentina or Mexico.

Nigeria missed out of the 2012 London Olympics men’s football event after a failed expedition at the 2011 Africa U23 Championship staged in Morocco.

Pot 1: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Japan

Pot 2: Nigeria, Korea Republic, Honduras, Iraq

Pot 3: Sweden, Fiji, Portugal, South Africa

Pot 4: Algeria, Colombia, Denmark, Germany

Sheyi Ojo started for Liverpool FC today. He was quite good on the wings. His pace was quite a nuissance for Pieters of Stoke. HE EVEN GOT AN ASSIST VIA SETTING UP STURRIDGE. HE SKIPPED PAST XHERDAN SHAQIRI WITH EASE BEFORE DOING SO grin
He was replaced by Divock Origi in the 46th minute.

IMPRESSIVE.... #Smiles

Another for the future. Good to know he's on our radar.

The game had been concluded.

It was a good full debut for Chidi Nwakali as his team-on loan, IK Start drew 1-1 with Solksjaer's Molde.

He was yellow-carded in the 60th minute and had an overall good game.

I hope Chidi finds his way back into Man City. It is sad he injured during the American tour and did not get the chance to show himself. Pellegrini hand picked him for that tour.

Wishing the young man the best.

Kelechi Iheanacho goal reminds Manuel Pellegrini of his talent

Kelechi Iheanacho has been forced to watch Manchester City's recent games from the bench but he has given manager Manuel Pellegrini a reminder of his talents with a brilliant goal in training.

The Nigerian teenager scored a stunning overhead volley at the club's training ground with the City boss watching on just yards away.

Iheanacho, who has nine goals for City this season, has not started a Premier League game since Feb. 2. But he could make a return against West Brom on Saturday with the huge Champions League game against Paris St-Germain coming up on Tuesday.

And Samir Nasri, who provided the exquisite flick-pass for Iheanacho's wonder goal, will also hope to feature after making his first appearance for five months as a late substitute in last Saturday's 4-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Nigeria midfielder Usman Mohammed has finally teamed up with Uniao Madeira after a short training stint at his parent club Desportiva Sanjoane.

Usman has a two-year contract, but he is on loan to Madiera till the end of the season.

“Usman has now joined Madiera after first trying to settle down in Europe at his original club,” a source close to the former FC Taraba skipper informed AfricanFootball.com

“He’s now fully fit and it’s up to him to fight for a place in the first team so as to start featuring in the league.

“He has already been registered for the league since the January transfer window opened.”

Madeira, who also have another Nigeria international, Shehu Abdullahi, are battling to stay afloat in the Portuguese top flight.

They are 16thon the 18-team league table with 26 points from 28 matches, only three points from Academica, who are sucked in the drop zone.

ELEKE RESCUES OLIMPIJA FROM DEFEAT
2

Nigeria U-23 hopeful Blessing Eleke scored his second goal in as many games for Olimpija Ljubljana rescuing them from the jaws of defeat with a late equaliser to earn them a 1-1 draw against Zavrc.

He opened his goal account for Olimpija against Krka last weekend after a slow start to life in his new surroundings he appeared to have finally settled down and he is now scoring the goals that made them splash big on him.

20 year old Eleke who holds the record for the most expensive domestic transfer in the history of Slovenia football when he moved from Gorica to Olimpija scored on the dot of 90 minutes.

The goal took his tally for his new side to two goals from 7 games but overall he has 14 goals this season after scoring 12 times for Gorica before his move to Olimpija in January.

Eleke is reportedly on the radar of Nigeria U-23 coach Samson Siasia ahead of the Olympics in Rio after he missed out on the Africa U-23 AFCON in Senegal due to his club refusal to release him.

OGANA ON TARGET FOR BRAGA II

20 year old Nigerian forward Louis Ogana who moved to Sporting Braga in the summer is seriously pushing for a first team spot at the club with his fifth goal for the reserve team.

Signed from third divison side Ribeirao where he scored 15 times from 30 games, he has found life in the second divison a lot tougher than the third divison with five goals so far from 22 games.

Ogana notched up his fifth goal of the season and it ended up as the winner that gave them all three points against Athletico CP in the Portuguese second division where they are presently placed 12th.

He is teammate to former Nigeria youth international Chidi Osuchukwu at the B team of the Portuguese side and both will be hoping their performances will help handlers of the main team give them a shot at the first team.

Osuchukwu has made 32 appearances with one goal to his name.

BREAKING: MIDDLESBROUGH AND DERBY COUNTY LINE UP BID FOR KENNETH OTIGBA

Heerenveen of Holland are running the risk of losing their Nigerian centre back Kenneth Otigba who is reportedly being chased by English Championship side Middlesbrough and Derby County.

Otigba contracted to Heerenven till the summer of 2018 was two seasons ago linked with a move to English Premiership giants Liverpool but the move failed to materialise.

Born to Nigerian parents in Hungary, he has indicated his willingness to play for Nigeria at senior international level but he is yet to be called up by the Nigeria national team.

So far he has made 27 appearances this season with three goals to his name from his role as a central defender where he has also picked up six bookings.

He has long indicated his willingness to move to England and with Middlesbrough and Derby County both battling to gain promotion to the English Premier League, a bid in the summer might entice him if the price is right.

Derby County are sixth on the Championship table which keeps them within the promotion play offs spot while Middlesbrough are in second position battling for automatic promotion with seven games remaining.

JUNIOR AJAYI’S DOUBLE TAKES SFAXIEN TOP OF TUNISIA LIGUE 1

A brace from Nigeria U-23 striker Junior Ajayi inspired Sfaxien of Tunisia to a 3-1 win over E0 Sidi Bouzid which took them to the top of the league in Tunisia.

20 year old Ajayi scored in the 35th minute to draw Sfaxien level before adding his second of the game nine minutes from full time which increased their lead to 3-1.

Ajayi signed from Shooting Stars where he was on loan from 36 Lions of Lagos is proving to be a shrewd acquisition by the league title hopefuls as he continues to score vital goals in the run in to the title.

The brace took his season’s tally to 8 from 19 games but more importantly helped Sfaxien leapfrogged Etoile du Sahel to move top of the table on 55 points, two more than their closest rival who were in CAF Champions League action.

His Nigerian counterpart at the team Kingsley Sokari was also in action for the entire duration of the game with Lukman Zakari the third Nigerian on the club’s book not yet eligible to play competitive games until he turns 18 in December.

“MAGNIFICIENT” SOLOMON CLOSE TO LEADING SIBENIK TO PROMOTION

Theophilus Solomon continued his fine run of form for NK Sibenik posting a man of the match performance as they beat Segesta 1-0 to move close to promotion to the top division in Croatia.

20 year old Solomon already has 12 goals this season didn’t score against Segesta but was by far the best player on the pitch for the table toppers in the Croatia second division.

Playing in his favourite top striker position, he was simply unplayable to Segesta twice crashing the bar with well hit effort from range with the goalkepper beaten.

Capped by Nigeria U-23 in a lone goal victory over Brazil in a friendly game few week ago. He brought others into play with smart hold up play and almost scored with an acrobatic effort late in the game.

However he wasn’t the only Nigerian on the pitch for Sibenik as goalkepper David Nwokolor made his 9th appearance between the sticks while mid season recruit Jamilu Collins also started in what was his 5th appearance of the season.

I understand a couple of teams fighting for promotion next season to the English premier league are looking to sign Otigba. Middesbrough and Derby.

The premier league will be great for Otigba. Our national coaches will not be able to hide their head in the sand regarding him. His visibility will be improved.

Dream Team risks expulsion from Rio as FIFA hammer looms

As Nigerians come to grips with the ouster of the Super Eagles from the African Cup of Nations holding in Gabon next year, more misery and pain await soccer fans as Samson Siasia’s Dream Team(U-23) may be excluded from the draws of the football event of the Rio Olympic Games which holds on Thursday at the Maracana Stadium, Brazil.

Following the annoying rumbles from the court in Jos that sent dangerous signals to the world that Nigerian football is engulfed in confusion, FIFA, Sports Vanguard gathered yesterday, may be breathing down on Nigeria for taking its case to ordinary courts. FIFA frowns against taking football matters to law courts for the resolution of football matters.

File photo; CHAMPIONS… Victorious CAF U-23, AFCON Champions, Nigeria’s Dream Team celebrate after defeating Algeria in the final, Saturday night.

A very senior Nigerian football stakeholder informed us yesterday that the World soccer-ruling body would make its stand known on the Nigerian crisis today.

‘’The court case sacking NFF President, Melvin Amaju Pinnick happened late on Friday and they(FIFA) don’t work at the weekend. Definitely, tomorrow(today) you will be hearing from them’’, our source said.

The source regretted that the U-23 team would be excluded from the draws as well as the senior national team, the Super Falcons from the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Cameroun which begins on November 19 and end on December 3.

“It’s going to be the beginning of more misery for soccer fans as everything related to football in Nigeria will be clamped by FIFA’’, the source regretted.

Also, former Scribe of NFF Sani Ahmed Toro warned yesterday that the court ruling in Jos was a violation of article 68 of FIFA Statutes. ‘’FIFA will definitely hammer us by invoking articles 14 and 70 of their statutes’’, the former House of Representative member said.

Premier League Wrap:Ojo Shines On First Start For Liverpool; Alli Hits Eighth Goal;Ibe&Onomah Not Involved
Catch up on the performances of players of Nigerian descent in the English Premier League on Sunday.

England youth international Sheyi Ojo made his first ever start for Liverpool in their 4-1 rout of Stoke City at Anfield. The winger notched an assist in the 32nd minute when he ghosted past his marker before crossing for Sturridge to head in.

While the 18-year-old was withdrawn at half time, there was no place in the squad for the Reds number 33 Jordon Ibe.

Tottenham Hotspur have closed the gap on leaders Leicester City thanks to their 3-0 thrashing of Manchester United at White Hart Lane.

Three Lions rising star Dele Alli found the back of the net in the 70th minute, his eighth league goal in a Spurs shirt, then was substituted in the third minute of stoppage time. He was booked a minute earlier.

The young midfielder Josh Onomah was not involved for the Londoners. It would have been his eighth appearance in the EPL if he was given a run out.

Klopp Sings Praises Of Liverpool Rising Star Sheyi Ojo

Klopp Sings Praises Of Liverpool Rising Star Sheyi Ojo
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has doffed his hat, literally, to Nigerian winger Sheyi Ojo on the heels of his impressive showing for his team in their 4-1 rout of Stoke City at Anfield on Sunday in the Premier League.

The German gaffer made seven changes to his starting XI,handing the England youth-teamer his first ever start in the top-flight and he repaid that faith by setting up the goal scored by Daniel Sturridge in the first half.

“And the same for Ojo. It’s more important than if he would have played a perfect game today and set a level and everybody would be waiting for him to jump over this,” said Klopp to liverpoolfc.com.

“He is a good boy, he has a way to go, no problem. After three, four moments on the right wing, to do what he did on the left [for Sturridge’s goal] with the dribbling and the cross was really brilliant and then Daniel finished perfectly.”

The 18-year-old Ojo has five appearances under his belt for the first team of Liverpool in all competitions this season.

The young star spent the first half of the 2015-2016 campaign at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Otigba rejected Hungary and it was all over the media. The coaches know he is one of ours. His chance will come. Just like Awaziem, they know they will get their chances.

Instead of the foreign lads waiting for a call up from the NFF, they should declare their interests and let the coaches know they are available for selection.

The NFF did not reach out to Leon Balogun. Coach Keshi called him up to the team because he knew he was available for selection.

Why wait for the NFF while they have easier chances with the coaches?

How will they just declare their interests when some of them have never been to Nigeria in their lives
They need to be influenced u think if Iwobi and V. Moses uncles Didnt influence them they would be playing for nigeria think again bro

Most of them are undecided they will go for the country that shows more interest and promise for them

Not when they become world class u start running after them

Jordan Ibe, we do not need him. They are many young Nigerians who can fill that role. No one is begging him. We do not need players we will beg to play for us. Those players can not be one hundred percent committed to the team.

We need to see devotion on their sides.

Iwobi said he has no regrets joining us, even if he is missing out on the Euros and not going to the AFCON. That is the kind of love we want.

The passion we saw in Aluko's eyes when we did not qualify in the last game of the qualifiers under Coach Keshi. He came in and played with all his heart.

Solanke has declared interest. I believe he will soon get his contact.

We can reach out to them and find out if they want to play. We do not need too much pleading. We need those who dream and live green white green, to wear our jerseys.

How will they just declare their interests when some of them have never been to Nigeria in their lives
They need to be influenced u think if Iwobi and V. Moses uncles Didnt influence them they would be playing for nigeria think again bro

Most of them are undecided they will go for the country that shows more interest and promise for them
If hungary was a strong footballing nation otigba will not be sitting around waiting for you bro.

Talk to them invite them for underage qualifiers when they are young spot them wen they are showing promise

Not when they become world class u start running after them

Sheyi Ojo get him now
Josh Onomah now
J.ibe talk to him again, he has been over looked he might reconsider.
Akpom talk to him
Solanke talk to him
Tosin Adarabioyo talk to him
And a long list of others

What the hell is Dele Alli doing on a Nigerian thread as if it is a report on a Nigerian? He is English and that is that.

That is like Reporting Rooney's goal here.

I got excited when i saw Sheyi Ojo on d starting line up. Thank God Spurs vs United was delayed so i really had time to assess d young lad.

The way he took d ball round Shaqiri was world class.

Henn bt England would want to by all means keep this boy. Nigeria should try o bt England,, after losing Iwobi would fight to keep sheyi.

But in other news, I respect ur views even thou they differ from mine most times but, I don't like y we miss out on one talent because we have other talents no bring them all cap them all we cant stay in our homes and know who is better, one thing this Anglo naija boys have on their side is youth, don't be surprised if V. Moses career last longer than iheanachos own from now.I don't belong to any side we need all the players having a heart conversation with someone who can't pronounce his name and convincing him to play for our country is not begging, players like Costa T. Motta Camoranesi the various F.A met with them is not begging at all. This are big nations not we proud Nigerians
Its dis things that will even make d player more dedicated, we keep saying we don't need dis one and DAT one but our football is dying
Y did debruyne go to man city ?
They called him every day.

Chai! I missed that match. Although, i have seen him play in the championship for Wolverhampton and Liverpool in the FA Cup where he scored a goal.

If England doesn't put him on European Cup list then i hope Siasia will invite him for the Olympics to fight for a place.

I think it is not all about how long they last but the long lasting effects of their performances.

I think the best model we need is to go back to the way Coach Westerhoff used to screen players. Coach Amunike is developing a knack for it and Coach Garba also.

Coach Westerhoff used to have up to one hundred players in the early stages of the camp and then screen out the best.

That built unity and a sense of belonging.

This model can help us integrate more players into the team. Both local products and foreign. Give more chance for these foreign boys to feel part of the team and make the coaches have closer look at them.

After a week or so, cut out the main ones who will make the team and pick some bright promising talents to train with the squad for next time.

What we are seeing Coach Amunike doing with the U20 is typical Coach Westerhoff.

He already has the U17 winning team but he is running an open camp with hundreds of players to continue searching for fresh talents and increase competition in the team.

I think we should adopt this model to the Super Eagles but this time we invite Professionals from home and abroad.
