It is far more complicated than that.

1.Incumbent presidents who have spent six years in power lose the Congress to the opposing party. Example...Bush lost Congress to the Democrats in 2006, as did Clinton to the Republicans in 1998. It is called the six year itch.

2.Obamacare was actually not furstrated...it was passed. But there were problems. First, a large segment of Obama's party hated it because it was not the system they wanted. And Republicans were not impressed (Obamacare is an adaptation of Romneycare...the programm put in place by Mitt Romney for his state of Mass. when he was the governor some years ago).

Also, Obamacare was not a gift to the Americans....it in essence mandated that employers and the govt buy health care insurance (for the uninsured)from (private ) companies. Rightly or wrongly....this was seen as a gift to said companies...who form part of the powerful and profit driven health care lobby.

And an unintended result was a rise in premiums for existing health insurance owners. All in all....Obamacare has not covered itself in glory.

(Modified....Many Americans want what is called a Single Payer system for their healthcare...rather than the gift to the insurer that is Obamacare. The idea is old...Richard Nixon the Republican president then mooted it back in 1973...but it wasn't passed because of politics....Watergate was on the horizon. That was regarded by Ted Kennedy...one of Nixon's opponents in the Senate back then as a big mistake from his party...the Democrats...in not passing that system...years later. Hindsight can be very painful).

3.Obama was not seen as being decisive enough in the international realm. He failed to close Guantanamo, failed to take leadership in the Ukraine crisis, and took a back seat on Libya(and lest we forget....the Benghazi debacle....which may also harm Hilary Clinton's chances in 2016). Then there was the Ebola issue too.And he continued the Bush war on terror policies....not liked by the Left wing of his party at all....and even some of the centrists.

4.Actually, the economy has improved under Obama. But, economic improvement does not necessarily win elections(as George H.W bush , father of Geroge W found out in the 1992 election).Add the fact that while a lot of people were getting jobs...many more were not.And even those getting jobs were getting poorly paid jobs. And manufacturing is still getting outsourced to China.

5.The condition of Black Americans has worsened under Obama (ironic bit of history...conditions for black people were better under Reagan in the 80's than Obama). That problem was there long before this election.....in 2011, one prominent black leader said that if the economic issues for Blacks had happened under any other president...blacks would have voted them out. Blacks did not really turn out in numbers for this election.

6.Hispanics....another strong Obama voting bloc...also are angry with him...based on his vacillation on the issue of amnesty for illegal immigrants to the US....a large percentage of whom are Hispanic.

7.Liberal women too are not too sure about their contraceptive rights...plus, in some areas....republicans were campaigning for reproductive rights better than Democrats.

8. The Republicans also got the Tea Party under control....reducing dissension in their ranks...and helping them portray a united front.

As for racisim...I doubt. The US is racist....but it is also changing. Just now, South Carolina voted its first black senator in over a hundred years...and he is Republican.(And the Carolinas are known not to be too black friendly). Again, racisim may have played a role...but Obama and his Democrats need to do a bit of improving.

LOL its funny if you were trying to be sarcastic but you're right. Republicans have been frustrating Obama's every move because of "Born to rule" mentality. They have rejected more bills than any other congress in US history, and the US hasn't had a budget approved since 2008. Your attempt at 'sarcasm' was actually fairly accurate.

the comment below you is also very accurate so somewhere between the two of them lies the truth. Democrats are no longer as inspired by obama after seeing that his handling of international affairs is less than inspirational and domestic affairs aren't changing like promised. America feels very stagnant right now. Things are not getting better and the problems are piling up so everyone's still waiting for 'change'.

Republicans ran stronger campaigns though, and with whites becoming smaller in number and less powerful American politics is becoming more and more tribal. Everyone is now more inclined to vote for their own group regardless. Issues of police brutality has brought race polarization to the forefront. Before whites didn't feel that they have to vote on tribal lines because all candidates were white and the didn't have to think about themselves as a part of a race being the majority. Now that other groups have grown in influence and number that has changed and minority groups of course think like that because of their long history of being abused and neglected by white leaders.

American politics is Nigerianizing so your 'sarcastic' comment isn't inaccurate.
Now if you don't feel the north is trying to frustrate Jonathan than you have an agenda, because there's no was someone can lie to themselves that severely for free.

Some of their angst comes from this. The next few cycles will be their last opportunity to run America and they better make hay while the sun lasts. Whites will lose their majority in about ten years. From about 2024, they would have to go into power sharing with the Hispanics.

The same whites that voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012, don't like him now?
Re: This Is Why Republicans Won US Senate House. by Ikengawo: 3:11pm On Nov 06, 2014
They, like all ethnic groups are split, and they're split the most traditionally because all options have been white and male, as this changes, they are becoming more and more monolithic in voting. Before they were 50/50, now they're 60/40 favoring republicans and it will only increase.

The issue is that too many Hispanics aren't registered to vote but yes you're right.

Recall, still with all due respect to the six-year itch effect, that about two-thirds of eligible voters did not turn out.
IMO, the overarching factor over the current fundamental demographic change and the anxiety it tends to cause, not least in form of protest 'tribal' voting, is that Republicans now have control & a solid majority in each house, even if it's less so in d Senate.
Surely there's no more excuse to block & obstruct but a chance to work together for d country's much delayed growth (self inflicted delay imo as recent economic trends could more easily have been far more solid in terms of quality of jobs created)
Here's hoping their new control will mean constructive compromise & not an extension of d sullen gridlock/hostage-taking of past 4 years Can't wait for d coming 2 years to unfold

And some people will come to Nairaland to tell us that tribe or religion are irrelevant and this is America. That was why a party was even comtemplating a same religion Presidency and VP for Nigeria. It was only when Obasanjo publicly criticised the plan that they were forced to come out to issue a rebuttal. Before that they ignored other people that spoke against it. FFK left APC as a result of it. Thanks for those who spoke against it. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to keep quite. Nigeria must not go the way of Iraq and Syria. Remember ISIS!
