Cost determines which I'd go for. I'd rather spend the 2000+ dollars for microsfts surface pro 3 on a sensible laptop. Amd I'd still have extra left for the ipad.

It all depends on what you need? The ipad and the surface 3 are both super. If you only need a tablet, if you primarily want to consume content, choose the ipad. If you want more power (similar to that of a laptop) and you also want to produce content, with your all too familiar Windows programs (even Photoshop); the Surface 3 will suit you better. I believe the Surface 3 is more laptop than tablet, even its price reflects that.
