As the Akwa Ibom State Government prides itself of having brought about structural and human capital revolution in the educational sector of the state, the Ikot Ubo community in Nsit Ubium local government area of the state is crying to the Governor Godswill Akpabio’s government to help rehabilitate the only secondary school in the community.

Chief Peter Michael Nduehe, village head of Ikot Ubo who also doubles as the Nsit Ubium chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Conference of Village Heads, said that he has started a three-months hunger strike to press home the demands of the community for the state government to intervene in the only secondary school that is said to accommodate over two thousand students from the community and its environs.

Conducting our Correspondent round the dilapidated structures of the school, he showed Journalists what used to be classrooms now over-grown with grass that were taller than humans, which is said to accommodate snakes, rodents and other dangerous reptiles which compete with students for learning space.

The three major buildings housing classrooms, library, staff room, offices, offices of principal officers of the school and others, have roofing sheets that have given way in most segments, while other segments have decayed roofing sheets, woods, caved-in roofs, collapsed doors, broken louvers, and visible traces of decay everywhere.

Eteidung Nduehe who os also the Secretary of Ubium Clan Council of Chiefs explained that the community has always supported the government and wondered why the government has abandoned them.

“This school is the only structure of government we believe will help us in developing our children who incidentally, are very desirous of going to school. This is the only secondary in this community, and it was built by the community in 1982 since the government as at then had not built any on.

“It is our sincere hope that the government of Akwa Ibom State will look in the direction of this helpless community, to help us in rehabilitating the school. We have heard and seen how this government has transformed the lives of people in other communities, even within Nsit Ubium local government area.

The inter-ministerial projects of this government have not come to us. We have seen projects undertaken in other parts of the local government, but it appears that Ikot Ubo has been abandoned. We honestly don’t want to believe that this is the case, but the government must assure our community by rehabilitating this school.

“We will remain grateful if the government can do this for us and our children. This is what we ask of this government.”

Students in Akwa Ibom write exams under rains and leaked roofs

Students of Edu Secondary School in Ikot Edeghe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have decried their continuous suffering which they have termed “cursed educational system in the state”.

The students who came out of their terminal exams soaked and drained complained bitterly of poor academic environment and total neglect of their school, characterised by perforated roofs and poor management for more than a decade.

One SS2 student who is currently writing his terminal exams and gave her name as Ima, said the situation has been their fate since she joined the school five years ago. She said, most of the students failed the last West African School Certificate (WAEC) exams woefully as a result of the perennial leakage of the school’s roofs during exams, as they battled with the rains during classes and exams.

“This is how the past students sat and wrote their WAEC examinations, as most of them got F9 and mere pass grade. Very few of them managed to secure credit passes in few subjects. I and a few friends of mine have vowed not to take our final exams in this school since there is no effort towards any change.

” We have already told our parents this; and they’re making arrangement for us to move to another school. I know it is going to be expensive, but we are not going to bother about it since our parents have accepted it.’’ Ima cried out.

Our correspondent met with an ex-student of the school , Master Imo Udo, who was in the school to collect his WAEC and NECO results. He initially refused to speak to us, but later granted us audience. Master Udoh said he had earlier predicted the poor outcome of the results because the Science Laboratory had been abandoned due to lack of facilities and the continuous leakage of the lab roof. He called on the government to urgently intervene. He expressed surprise that, no noticeable improvement had been made since he left the school last year, even with the Deputy Governor, Lady Valerie Ebe who is from the very village.

“I pray that government of Akwa Ibom State would comes and renovate this school. Why are we shouting ‘free and compulsory education’ when schools are in deplorable condition in our state?

This skills acquisition centre in Abak – the government said it was renovated with N300million ($1.9M). Nothing was done h1 (2)80% of budgeted projects in Akwa Ibom are never executed, a legacy of wastage all round the country. Akwa Ibom is one of the states that don’t have its budget online, not even the governor’s budget speech – Very secretive.

In 2012 Akwa Ibom state government passed perhaps the largest supplementary budget for a state. N125b, ($782B) bringing its 2012 budget to a total of N522b ($3.3B).Much higher than a lot of countries in Africa.

Poverty has so stricken the people that the basis of evaluating performances of leaders is not based on a well thought out vision for the state and a strategic plan of reaching those goals but leaders a praised based on some infrastructures here and some there while the bulk of the funds are looted.

This is the phenomenon all over the country, the debt management office of Nigeria released on its website the level of indebtedness by the country, all the 36 states, the federal capital Abuja and the federal government are all owing huge amounts that the next generation would have to cope with:

FG Scraps Akwa Ibom Nursing School Over Poor Infrastructure

By Dave Emma
The Akwa Ibom State School of Psychiatric Nursing located in Eket local government area has been shut down after the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) de-accredited all the courses of the school.
A source in the school who confirmed this in a phone chat maintained that after the NMCN carried out investigation last year and warned the school management that it was going to deactivate all the courses of the school if nothing was done in twelve months to renovate and equip the school. But after a year, the body which is responsible for the regulation of schools of nursing, psychiatric schools and allied health institutions in the country launched another investigation in March this year and discovered that instead of improving, the learning environment of the school was further deteriorating. This informed its decision of deactivating all the courses which led to the closing down of the school in April this year

Wedding Gift Delivered! Akwa Ibom State Government presents Toyota Prado SUV to Annie Idibia Godswill Akpabio defends Gesture

At the traditional wedding of Nigerian music star 2Face Idibia and his wife Annie Idibia last Friday, the Akwa-Ibom state governor Godswill Akpabio announced that he was going to present the bride with a Toyota Prado SUV. He also promised to sponsor 20 of Annie’s relatives to Dubai for the couple’s white wedding.

Although this announcement caused an outrage as people criticized the governor for the expensive gift, he has kept true to his word. Less than one week after the traditional wedding, the state government has presented Annie with the car and released a picture showing the state’s Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah presenting the gift to Annie and 2Face Idibia in Lagos.

The state goverment has also released a statement defending the gifts and some misleading reports published in the media. The statement by Aniekan Umana released on Wednesday said that Akpabio approved only one car, and not two, for the couple. He also said he only promised to sponsor 20, and not 29, wedding guests to Dubai for the couple’s white wedding. Read the statement below

“Following spurious and false speculations in the social media concerning the wedding gift by Governor Godswill Akpabio to Mrs. Annie Innocent Idibia, née Macaulay, I wish to state as follows:

That the Governor of Akwa Ibom State Chief Godswill Akpabio, donated ONE Prado jeep to Mrs. Annie Innocent Idibia, nee Macaulay a daughter of Akwa Ibom State and renowned artist during her traditional marriage at Eket.

That the State Governor as a token of support for the couple promised to fund the traveling expenses (economy return tickets) for only 20 relatives of Mrs. Annie Idibia Macaulay to Dubai, where the couple have chosen to wed.

That looking carefully at the surrounding events in perspective, Mrs. Annie Idibia, nee Macaulay is a daughter of Akwa Ibom State and the gift of a Prado SUV from her governor is only a gesture of love and goodwill. Her resolve to stand by her husband on his journey right from his days of youthful beginnings to stardom even in the face of challenges was commendable and a true attribute of the Akwa Ibom women.

That it is however unbecoming that mischief makers and enemies of progress have decided to inflame the social media with incongruous reports that the State Government is sponsoring an entourage of party supporters to the wedding in Dubai, when in fact the Government is only sponsoring the travel expenses of twenty of her family members at an estimated cost of roughly Three Million Naira (N3,000,000.00) only.

I wish to therefore urge members of the public to discountenance the misrepresentations made out of a well intentioned act of the governor.”

Still, no new school, no new hospitals, no new health centers, no skill centers nothing, nursing school was shut down because of poor infrastructure, but the dumb, corrupt, incompetent and clueless man thought dashing out free luxury jeeps to celebrities and sponsoring dozens of people to Dubai for wedding was more important to the people of Akwa Ibom..

smh....

Akpabio And The Suffering Of Primary School Teachers In Akwa Ibom State

"Teachers in public primary schools in Akwa Ibom State are yet to be paid their meagre salaries for the months on June and July 2014"

If there is a class of civil servants in Akwa Ibom State that have been perennially marginalized, deeply stigmatized and greatly insulted, it is teachers in the about 1110 public primary schools in the state. Their story is a tragic reminder of the agonizing era of slavery when slave-workers who devoted the totality of their lives to the service of slave masters and the society were never properly appreciated and compensated.

Unlike their counterparts in public secondary schools, primary school teachers in Akwa Ibom State are relegated by the state government to a point that silence is no longer golden. It is as if they have sinned against God and humanity. The current travails of these oppressed teachers cannot be exhaustively addressed in this piece, it will require writing a textbook if one were to attempt an exhaustive narrative of their travails. But for the purpose of this essay, few examples will suffice.

How does one explain the fact that till now, the third week of August 2014, teachers in public primary schools in Akwa Ibom State are yet to be paid their meagre salaries for the months on June and July 2014. How can a government that prides itself as being pro-people owe those who have the historic task of laying a foundation for our children's education for two months? These are people with families to cater for, people who do not have any other serious source of income.
