“We were able to use a whistleblowers phone to get across to our family and the whistle blower in turn notified the Women Affairs ministry who with the help of the police bursted the brothel.”

One of the victims’ parents, Mrs Uchechi Friday said immediately her daughter got missing, she lodged a complaint at the Police station in Abakaliki.

“I was shocked when I got a call from my daughter which made me to seek help from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare,” she said.

Appreciating the Commissioner for her prompt response, Uchechi urged other parents to always be at alert of their children’s welfare and whereabout.

Reacting, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo restated government’s resolve in ending all forms of child kidnap, trafficking and sexual slavery in the state.

She warned hotel owners to desist from using underage girls in running their businesses or face the law, assuring that the case which had already received attention of Governor Chukwuma Soludo would not be treated with levity.

While recounting how her Ministry was able to apprehend the suspect in collaboration with the Police after a tip off from a whistle blower, Obinabo said she had since contacted victims’ family members after taking them to hospital for medical examination and possible treatment.

“The case has since been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka for comprehensive investigation and consequently charged to court,” she added.

I work at a hospital in Ajegunle, Lagos. Close to the hospital, the next street (AKIMBO STREET) has the highest no of brothels per street=4. Also ironically, they have 5 churches in that same street. This area has the highest no of prostitutes in Lagos..... Like it is the first work a girl in secondary school reasons before finishing school. The police in Anambra State have rescued nine girls used as sex slaves in a hotel in Anambra State.

The proprietor of the undisclosed hotel was also arrested during the rescue mission.

Police state Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed this to newsmen in Awka, the state capital on Monday.

He said the girls were brought in from Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom, and Rivers States with the pretext of giving them jobs to alleviate their plights.

He said the girls were rescued following
information from the state's Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.


The PPRO said, "Following the information received from Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare yesterday 18/6/2023 by 6:00 pm, Police pperatives stormed a hotel in Awka and rescued 9 girls within the age bracket of 15-23years, used for sex slaves and arrested the proprietor of the hotel.

"Interrogations/confessions of the rescued girls, revealed that the respective persons that brought them to the brothel lured/enticed them on the assurances of giving them jobs to alleviate poverty/needs of their parents and dependents.

"They further confessed to being taken from Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom, and Rivers States. Also, the police command is in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare to make sure the girls are taken care of and safely returned to their parents/guardians."

"The Command has condemned the act and frowned at such persons who take advantage of vulnerable individuals to make money and describe such places as a den where criminals take refuge.

"We urge the good people of Anambra to continue to provide the police with information about such places as the joint operations to weed such harbour has commenced.

Ikenga added,"You are encouraged to call the Command Control Room number *07039194332* or PRO on *08039334002*. Be assured that all information passed through these channels shall be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

"The case has since been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department Awka SCID, for comprehensive investigation and shall be charged to court afterward."

The operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have bursted a hotel in Awka, the state capital, where underage girls are allegedly used as sex slaves.

The Spokesperson of the Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, made this known on Monday in a statement issued to newsmen.

According to him, the proprietor of the hotel was also arrested. He added that the operation was carried out following a tip of information received from Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.

DSP Ikenga further revealed that the rescued girls, numbering nine, were between the ages of 15-23 years.
