Since you are a British passport holder all you need is a ticket, you do not need a visa. Buy a ticket. End of story.

Yeah all you need is a ticket BUT you need to find out how much it is going to cost you ie asking the NHS and all that. OR if you have family members that can help you out here. Child birth can be expensive so do your research well before you come.
Re: I Want To Give Birth In Us by Hotstepper(f): 9:59pm On Dec 02, 2008
itz expensive to give birth in the U.S ooo, I dont think even less than 10,000 dollars can do the job

Do You have fam in the states?

After You Give Birth,What NEXT?

What State?
Re: I Want To Give Birth In Us by Shinatu: 12:53pm On Dec 03, 2008
I do not think 3k will do.
Houston is about the cheapest place from all I gather( I may be wrong), and it takes from $5 to 6K for the
Hospital bills alone.

If you have anyone you can stay with around Queens in New YorK let me know I
could give you a contact (Hospital) that will cost about 5-6K too, although I met
someone on the plane once who said she got a hospital in Brooklyn for less.(she
found the hospital on the internet or something)

Like others said, just buy the ticket but make sure you are not too heavy or airline officials may decline to board you. If you come to the Washington DC area, preferably you have folks in the area, let them inquire about Providence Hospital. If you do your due diligence, you'd end up not paying a dime for your hospital costs. G'Luck.

I hope you have very good medical Insurance, My sister just had a baby and her insurance from her job covered 80% of the bill, but she  still has a bill of over $5000 she has to pay. And she did not even have any complications and spent only 2 days in the hospital. The health care system here sucks, we are not as lucky as you guys in the UK with your universal health care system.
Re: I Want To Give Birth In Us by debosky(m): 12:17am On Dec 04, 2008
It really depends on the state where you give birth, I personally feel $3000 will be a long shot to cover all the bills, especially if you require admission close to your delivery period and need to pay for an anaesthesiologist and all the other specialists.

Places like Georgia are a bit complicated and can be expensive, I'd suggest Chicago, Illinois - if you have a relation or friend in the area who can assist then it would be useful. In addition, the very good public transit in Chi town helps you do the running around yourself not requiring someone to drive you around as would be the case in most of the south.

so if there is someone she could stay with till due period of birth, about how much is expected ro spend for that? do u mean hospital bills alone is over $3k? why is it that expensive?
Re: I Want To Give Birth In Us by debosky(m): 12:36am On Dec 04, 2008
I can't give an exact figure, but it really depends - hospital stays are one of the most expensive portion of healthcare, followed by 'specialist' consultations.

Some illnesses run into $100,000s just because of the hospital stays, not even the drugs or treatment.

The duration of stay, whether or not she gets taken in under the state medical coverage program or not will be a big determinant. Some hospitals will take in pregnant women with limited info, only an address and other basic details, others may ask for social security number and the likes, at that point it will be evident that one is not a citizen or resident and extra costs may be incurred.

Some states have special medical coverage for pregnant mothers that you may be able to take advantage of as well. Like I said, someone on the ground with some knowledge of that state's specific medical practices/programs will be a great help.

Even if she stays with someone and goes to the hospital at the last minute. She will be in the hospital at least over night, and possibly 2 days. That is easily over $10,000. I am in a Chicago suburb, and even though the hospitals we used for my 2 kids, were a little on the high end, you should expect to pay at least $5000/night even in the hospitals in the city of Chicago. I am not sure if it's a law that the hospitals cannot deny you even if you do NOT have insurance.

The #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US is inability to pay medical bills. Bottom line, it's a whole lot more expensive here.

Give me the name of one hospital in the states that will cover birthing for $3000  without medical insurance or medicare[ visa recipients don't qualify for any state run programs] and I will call you uncle. $3000 don't even cover the doctor bill talk-less of the hospital bill or the bill from the Anesthesiologist. Oh sh^t! We've not even talked about Pharmacy bill during the hospital stay or did you forget that. I'm sure you going to need tones of Pills. I hope you know all those bills come separate.

@ the poster,do you have a family member that can house you when you arrive?
OK.
Ask them if they know any community health centers in the area.
When you arrive call a community health center and tell them you want to make an appt for a prenatal and that you want to know if they have a sliding fee scale program.
They'll probably need an income etc which you don't have. They may need a letter from your host saying that they're housing you and taking care of you.I'll advice that you go to a health center that caters to mainly low income Hispanic immigrants which every large city has.
The visits may just cost $20 or less if you qualify and they usually have programs where uninsured pregnant women can apply for medicaid that'll cover just the birth of the baby
.
I know some specific hospitals in some places that I've lived in who have this sort of program.
email me on babyosisi@hotmail.com and I'll give you the names in case you have relatives there.

If you just plan on coming and being rushed to the emergency room at labour, note that the names of all foreigners who abscond without paying their bills are reported to immigration and you could never ever get a visa to re-enter.
