Speaking In Tongues by Frankenstein: 4:51pm On Jan 05, 2015
I've read the passage where the disciples where gathered in a room praying, when the Holy Spirit descended upon them and made them speak in different tongues (languages).

The purpose of this miracle was to showcase the power of God to the different people present at that period of Pentecost; for they spoke different tongues (Languages). So when they heard and understood the disciples, they marveled, repented and gave their lives to Christ.

So one can conclude that that singular event was to get converts. But nowadays, Christians speak in tongues at just anytime and anywhere — from morning devotions to vigils.

I just want to know if there's any other purpose of Speaking in tongues. Bible quotations and references needed.

There are many purpose and importance of speaking in tongue.
Firstly its the evidence that you have the Holy Spirit which you cannot have unless you are truly saved. Many think it's a gift but no it's not, all you have to do after salvation is just receive Him.

He is your advocate.

it teaches you how to pray.

Speaking in tongues is an evidence... Okay, do you know where this is written in the Bible.

Remember that the disciples spoke in tongues that people around them understood. Tongues like Aramic, Hebrew, Latin, Greek and others.

[b] Acts 2 records the apostles
being baptized in the Holy Spirit and
empowered by Him to proclaim the gospel.
The apostles were enabled to speak in
other languages (tongues) so they could
share the truth with people in their own
languages. Acts 10 records the apostle Peter
being sent to share the gospel with non-
Jewish people. Peter and the other early
Christians, being Jews, would have a hard
time accepting Gentiles (non-Jewish
people) into the church. God enabled the
Gentiles to speak in tongues to demonstrate
that they had received the same Holy Spirit
the apostles had received (Acts 10:47 , 11:17 ).
Acts 10:44-47 describes this: “While Peter
was still speaking these words, the Holy
Spirit came on all who heard the message.
The circumcised believers who had come
with Peter were astonished that the gift of
the Holy Spirit had been poured out even
on the Gentiles. For they heard them
speaking in tongues and praising God. Then
Peter said, 'Can anyone keep these people
from being baptized with water? They have
received the Holy Spirit just as we have.'“
Peter later refers back to this occasion as
proof that God was indeed saving the
Gentiles (Acts 15:7-11 )

people do it cos it feels trendy. but every man to his own. whatever one feels is worth doing with his soul is best known to him

personally, I know you can't speak in tongues of yo own accord. you don't walk around with yo eyes wide open talking gibberish and feel yur speaking in tongues. when the Spirit takes over you won't even be conscious of yourself

Speaking in tongues happens when one receives the holy spirit. It can't be induced then. It should be a one-time event since you receive the Holy Spirit once which becomes everlasting.

How?

You have received Him and He's yours forever, one of His gift is speaking in tongue which also become yours forever. Now you may choose not to speak in tongues but you are missing a lot if you choose not to.
