Why We Can’t Proceed With Election – Jega by selfemployed(m): 5:32pm On Feb 07, 2015
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, has concluded a briefing meeting with 25 civil society groups in Abuja Saturday informing them that all security agencies in the country have indicated to him, in writing, that they are not available to support the elections planned for February 14

Mr. Jega who had an earlier meeting with political parties is rounding up another meeting with his 36 resident commissioners now on what will amount to an INEC position on whether to postpone or go ahead with the elections.

Insiders at the meeting said “its pretty much a done deal at this point that the lections will be postponed” and many of the attendees told PREMIUM TIMES they were shell-shocked and depressed at what they characterize as “a clear case of political blackmail of the state against civil society.”

Jibrin Ibrahim, a leading African election expert and senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that security operatives from all the agencies told INEC that they were commencing a six weeks special operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.

Mr. Jega announced that the security forces also said the operations are due to commence on February 14, the date INEC had planned for the presidential and other federal elections.

This decision, by the security forces, successfully renders INEC’s hitherto insistence to go ahead with the elections a risky venture.

To even collect ballot papers from their storage in the Central bank for the elections will still require security escort, which apparently is now unavailable in the light of the move by the security forces.

Ok. But for APC's information, if GEJ wishes that this elections be held in December, he can conveniently arrange for it. So if you are not ok by any move by Mr. GEJ, just look for a strong piller in your neighbourhood and bash your head on. As for me, its GEJ till Naira equals $5.

So the state has effectively blackmailed INEC using the army, to force a postponement of the elections? Well done Jonathan, you are turning into the dictator you have accused your opponent of being. Who remembers Aaondoaka, or Turai who it seemed once upon a time had the whole country in their hands? Where are they today? Our leaders fail to learn from history.

Go ahead if that's the only option left for us..but why are we so impatient about the postponement!
Everything about naija is rush,rush!
After all February 14 was picked by inec not the electorate. If they deemed it fit to postpone it, why not!
Better late than never!

Jega and APC's plan failed. Fellow Nigerians, the APC is an evil party who's sole agenda is to enrich Tinubu and give power to the North. Pls Nigerians forget the online propaganda by the apc. Their aim is to change public opinion against GEJ.

GEJ till 2019 then the North can have it...and yes omo Yooba ni mi.

I don't claim Jonathan to be clueless because that would absolve him of complicity. He is corrupt and incompetent, not clueless. He knows what he is doing, and he is fast writing his name in the history of Nigeria as being the biggest disappointment the country have ever been unfortunate enough to stumble upon. That is simply what it is. And he came in with so much good will from the people. . . .

If you live in Nigeria, when last did your neighbourhood go up to a week with uninterrupted power? Keep thinking this is about Jonathan and Buhari, keep passionately defending a failing government in the misguided belief that you are "winning" some useless race to the bottom. Because this is what this is, a race to the bottom. Goodluck to you people who have to put up with a situation you have chosen to defend with all your heart and soul but still have the audacity to complain about. Twenty years from now you will still be complaining about no light and corruption and unemployment, but you will still be too stubborn to see the connection while shouting "Jonathan till 2050". What a hopeless lot

And now he is "strong" because he is using the equipment of the state to bear down on his opponents? Why hasn't he been able to apply this same vigour and "strength" to sorting out boko haram and corruption and rescuing the missing girls? What a bunch of jokers you lot are, keep celebrating tyranny misconstrued as "strength". When two elephants fight it is the grass that suffers. But there really is no hope for the grass when the grass refuses to realise that it is indeed the grass.

Forcing INEC to postpone the election is such a terrible thing for Mr Jonathan/PDP to do.

It damages his Presidency and ruins his legacy. Like people remember June 12, people will remember a President who, facing imminent defeat, forced the postponement of an election.

It is for people to decide who they want as their President. Saying you will never hand over power to a particular candidate, and in the process use every form of underhand action possible to deny millions of people their aspiration to choose a particular man as their leader is too bad.

Any victory by this President following postponement will be nothing but a pyrrhic victory. A false victory. A manipulated victory. A shallow, meaningless victory.

The military declined to provide security for the election which renders the election exercise a risky venture.

In order word, Jonathan and security agencies sabotaged the election.

Jonathan is a desperate man. He is clinging to power at all cost but it won't work for him. I expect international community to sanction Jonathan. Jonathan is on the way to become the next Lawrence Gbagbo.
