Nairaland Might Be Shut Down. by otil1: 3:35pm On Feb 08, 2015
Dear Nairalanders,

This thought just occurred to me and I decided to share with you all.

We have all enjoyed relative freedom of expression in Nigeria and open forums like Nairaland have been thriving, allowing us, young Nigerians to share and exchange ideas in very many areas. A lot of people have had life changing experience from knowledge gathered from Nairaland. This is true. I for one.

As I praise Seun and his group of originators of the forum, as well as we all, the contributors and members of this online community, let's please pay head to below.

Nairaland might be shut down. Yes.

One of the greatest worries Nigerians have is that no one can fully predict Buhari's style of leadership should he become president.

Some say change (@73?), but no concrete proof yet.

I, for one, the Buhari I know will clamp down on press and free speech. Please nobody should bother convincing me otherwise. The highest situation possible with Buhari leadership will be a reduction of the freedom we all currently enjoy and sometimes abuse today, without (any) much recourse.

We have all been free, just like a bird!

Now I am convinced that nairaland will be a target of the administration because of the rich and forever vibrant political section, which truly has operated as a no-holds-barred section.

As an instance, Nairaland holds an easy repository of all that has been said about Buhari -nothing hidden, all in multi-media: text passages, written comments of members, audio, video, picture, cartoons and other graphics.

For a Buhari, these will not be pleasing. He will pull Nairaland down, mark my word.
Let Seun and his system administrators ponder this and devise a fall-back strategy.
I submit this in love of Nairaland. I will be showing you in this thread, some the contents of Nairaland that will definitely not sit well with the general should he make it.

2015 ‘ll Be Bloody If…- Buhari

Which ever way Buhari statement in Hausa was interpreted from "biri jini kare jinni" which means 'dog bloody monkey bloody', either bloody 'Monkey' or 'Baboon', both are lower animals. Buhari would not be talking about animals, birds, or reptiles that would 'be soaked in blood' in 2015, it is human blood, and this is unacceptable to most Nigerians.
KADUNA– Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the 2011 election, General Mohammadu Buhari, rtd, yesterday identified three types of Boko Haram in the country with the Federal Government topping the list, followed by those he described as criminals who steal and kill Nigerians in the name of religion, with the third group as the original one led by late Muhammed Yusufu.

Buhari spoke in Hausa while addressing members of the CPC from Niger State, who paid him a courtesy visit in Kaduna. He also warned that 2015 would be bloody if the elections were not transparent, just as he dismissed reports that he would not contest the 2015 presidency.

LONDON, Nov. 17— More than 40 soldiers have been executed in Lagos after a plot to assassinate Nigeria's military leaders was uncovered, a London newspaper said in its Sunday issue.

The paper, The Observer, said 42 officers and enlisted men were involved, including two lieutenant colonels and four majors. The plan had been to gun down the Nigerian leader, Gen. Mohammed Buhari, and his ministers while they were watching the independence day parade in Lagos on Oct. 1, the paper said.

But the plot was revealed, and the plotters were rounded up and shot in an underground firing range at Ikeja, outside Lagos, it said. General Buhari toppled the civilian Government of President Shehu Shagari in a coup on Dec. 31, 1983.

Dutse — Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has expressed disgust over what he described as the level of threat some northerners were facing for not supporting the presidential ambition of the former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, warning that the type of siege mentality being inflicted on the people was the beginning of the failure of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, at the polls.

“The fear of Buhari is the beginning of leadership failure; therefore Nigerians and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government must stand up to its mandate,” he said.

The Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice said on Thursday in Abuja that it has submitted additional information linking the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to the 2011 post-election violence to the International Criminal Court of Justice at The Hague.

The group’s lawyer, Prof. Sluiter Goran, spoke with the officers of the coalition in a video call on Skype, confirming that he had filed the supplementary evidence about 3pm at The Hague.

The call was set up during a press conference organised by the officers of the NCD in Abuja.

The group insisted that the 2011 post-election violence was not spontaneous “but was orchestrated and the direct result of General Buhari’s inflammatory speeches.”

1. NIGERIA: The Buhari Regime

Despite the increased efficiency with which Buhari and his associates tackled the multifaceted national crisis, the regime's inflexibility caused discontent. The latter was the main justification given for the overthrow of Buhari by General Babangida in a palace coup on August 27, 1985, although the personal ambition of Babangida was an important contributing factor.
4. Nigeria: Human Rights

Under the Buhari regime military security was the criteria for judicial action, often in the form of military tribunals. The government not only gave the NSO greater powers but also promulgated decrees that directly violated human rights. The most notable were State Security (Detention of Persons) Decree Number 2 of 1984, which empowered the chief of staff at Supreme Headquarters to detain anyone suspected of being a security risk indefinitely without trial (detention was for three months initially, and then renewable), and Decree Number 4, which made the publication of any material considered embarrassing to any government official a punishable offense. Under Decree Number 2, many people considered "enemies" of the government were detained in NSO cells and allegedly tortured. Second Republic government officials, whom the Buhari regime held collectively responsible for the economic mess, were detained without trial or were tried by special military tribunals. At these tribunals, the accused was assumed guilty until proved innocent rather than innocent until proved guilty. Journalists and media organizations were regularly harassed by security agents; organized interest groups whose members dared to criticize the government openly or engage in demonstrations or strikes were proscribed.

The most active human rights group in Nigeria in 1990, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), founded by a group of young lawyers led by Olisa Agbakobe, emerged during the Buhari days. Before its emergence, human rights groups included the local branches of Amnesty International, far less effective than the parent organization, and the Nigeria Council for National Awareness, founded after the assassin

Under the Buhari administration, the NSO engaged in widespread abuses of due process, including detention without charge and trial, arrests without pretext, and wiretapping.

According to the PDP campaign group, “We have been informed that General Buhari and the APC have decided not to participate in the NPAN-CHANNELS Television-organised debate after they had earlier agreed to take part in it.

“We had thought that having withdrawn from participating in the debate organised by Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), they would have availed themselves this second platform.
“Now that they have also turned their back on this, it is now very clear that General Buhari is incapable of engaging in rigorous live television debates on the issues of governance. It speaks about his intellectual laziness and his loss of touch with contemporary issues of development and statecraft.

“We would like to reiterate that the APC has something to shield about General Buhari.

While agreeing with you that a Buhari presidency will naturally prefer a much more regulated media space, I will agree with those who believe that it might not be anything like his military era when he could make decrees on the spot and even backdate it a million years to rope in any culprit.

Yes, the leadership in China banned Facebook outright. The possibility is there but in practical sense, a new law will require the national assembly's upper and lower chambers. On existing statutes, it will be difficult to completely bring down a media platform like Nairaland. If the fed govt approacjes the court, they will need to specifically cite the offending content and seek for it (or them) to be pulled out, request a rebuttal and perhaps a monetary compensation as damages. But again< all that will take time and motion in a typical court process and Nairaland (and Nairalnders) will have opportunity to put up a good fight.

So, summary, no much course for alarm.

I believe current content policies on Nairaland are adequate. So worry not dear Nairalander grin

Don't say because you clearly don't know. Yes, Buhari has sold himself to Nigerians as someone ready to fight corruption. But even the one he fought was replete with stories of high-handedness and vindictiveness. Today with issues concerning his wasc, some of us are getting less convinced that he is that "don't dirty" Mr. anti-corruption, when clearly he entered the army on mere recommendation without possessing the basic qualification. He is currently facing at least three court actions bordering on perjury plus forgery.

Anyway, emboldened part of your tirade, because you asked, let me provide you but a handful:

1. Ekwueme faced Buhari's tribunal that concluded that he became poorer in office than when he entered. He was jailed anyway.

2. Buhari jailed journalists Ndukar Irabor and Tunde Thompson of the Guardian on stories that were factually true under Decree 4. He had told the Nigerian journalists then that it did not matter whether the story reported was true or not, if his regime did not like it, the writer would go to jail.

3. Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, returned from 13years exile just a little over a year then was as well locked up in Kiri Kiri Prison. Up till today we are not told what was Ojukwu’s offence.

4. Busari Adelakun died of ulcer because Buhari refused him to be taken out of prison for immediate medical attention. The then Governor of Ogun State,Bisi Onabanjo suffered similar fate which we were told led to his untimely death.

5. Prof. Ambrose Alli also became blind as a result of this false imprisonment. When he died, he had only one undeveloped plot of land to his name.

6.Pa Adekule Ajasin was never the same after his eventual release and remained sickly for the rest of his life. Whe he died, he never had any property anywhere in the world except the one he had built from his sweat as long term teacher and school principal in Owo township

When I express concern about the man Buhari< i know what I am talking about. The facts are there for all who care to see
