This thread is exclusively for Graduates in the UK, don't really want to come across as rude but sometimes its better we use things for what they are actually for.

Are you teasing her? As an experienced chemical engineer you are very likely to have several magazine that relates to your field and you obviously know about shell,Mobil,and co. stop teasing us with your experience mate wink. I'd like to hear you experience though especially from Uni-Career. The transition

You should be searching for schools in Scotland, to get a good job afterwards you will need to be very hard working and have no restrictions on your visa. Another good idea is for you to school in countries where they actually have oil and gas> Texas usa

Well i just managed do finish my first Degree and it was because i did not ask much questions when i was supposed to , that made my graduation a managed one!
We know about schools we apply but why we ask these questions is cos we think that guys there may know something that we dont and that knowlegde might be helpful to us.
Please if you still have info about Coventry and Prospects of IT in Uk, that will be more welcomed

Re: Graduates in the UK by somebody(f): 1:47pm On Jul 07, 2007
Sorry I have abandoned this thread for a while. I would try to answer some of the questions asked that Dis guy hasn't already answered. First of all, if you school in Nigeria then I'm sorry I really don't know how you can get a job here except you are thinking of coming to do a MASTERS or something of that sort. Please bear in mind that I am not saying it is impossible, I just can't advice you on that and suggest getting a job in Nigeria for starters.

@Gomez, Coventry university is NOT a good university. I don't know how I can phrase it in a nicer way. I know a lot of people that went there and some are doing well so it doesn't mean going there is totally a bad thing but if did your first degree in Nigeria then you really want to boost your chances with a better school on your CV.

@Coon-kg, your choice of school is quite good especially for the course that you have chosen. Surrey uni has a lot of links with engineering companies including my former company so I think you made a very good choice and I'm sure you wouldn't need my help when looking for jobs. A lot of engineering companies would be advertising in your school so you should be okay. Good luck.

@Germano, I don't really know much about experienced roles but I worked in oil and gas for sometime and I think http://www.oilcareers.com/worldwide/ and http://www.oilandgasjobsearch.com/default.aspx should be useful. I have only used the first link though.

Sorry if there is anyone I have ignored, please feel free to ask more questions. I'll try to visit more often to answer them. Good luck to all!!
Re: Graduates in the UK by somebody(f): 1:54pm On Jul 07, 2007
@ Karl, sorry I missed you out. Dis guy is right, Scotland would be a good place for an oil and gas masters. Robert Gordon, Heriot-Watt and University of Aberdeen are obvious choices. Imperial College is also a very good place but it is probably the most expensive. You could also try Newcastle uinversity. All the best!!
Re: Graduates in the UK by Tats(m): 1:00am On Jul 08, 2007
I seem to be reading posts from members wanting to know how they will get a job in the UK, so I am just making some points to note here in addition to what other posters have advised.

Fresh out of a Nigerian Uni and trying to get a job in the UK is really difficult (especially without a British passport - not even a guarantee!). Get some very good experience in Naija and you just might get a good job in the UK if u have a right to work/or a company is willing to sponsor a work permit if you've got specialised skills and it is in shortage here. Otherwise, do your postgraduate in the UK and look for a job. Good luck on that.

For those trying to get a job in the UK while resident in Nigeria, I must tell you that it is a very difficult thing. Companies and recruitment agencies will not deal with you as you are not in the UK. So, options are that u come on holiday and test the market yourself, take a bold step and quit your naija job and move to the UK or remain in your job in naija.

@Somebody,
Ur posts are very interesting and encouraging.More grease to your elbow!!!Thanks for the concern shown to the house.

I am a nigerian,born in the uk which qualifies me for british citizenship.Infact,i have applied for my British passport and due to collect it next week.I studied Statistics and graduated with a 2.2. I am currently doing the compulsory NYSC(Youth service)and would be through by February 2008.I hope to be in the Uk before the end of Feb 2008.

Can i start looking for a job now?I intend to apply for a masters degree in Human Resource Management.I have these schools in mind,De Montforte University,University of Birmingham,University of Glasgow,University of Aberdeen,Lancaster University and University of stirling.Which Of these schools will give me the best?

Can i apply now against september 2008?Am i going to pay school fees as a citizen or as an international student since i have not lived in the uk for the past three years?

I await your reply
Thanks
Re: Graduates in the UK by somebody(f): 11:17pm On Jul 09, 2007
@Oludunamis, what exactly about investment banking do you want to know. I'm sure I can help.
@liliana, I don't think you can start applying now for jobs because you would be unable to attend an interview. Getting a job wthout a UK degree would be extremely difficult but I'm sure it is doable. However, I would advice you to come do the Masters at Universty of Birmngham(best out of your options). You could also consider Manchester Uni but you wouldn't be eligible for home student's fee because as you rightly pointed out, you haven't lived here for up to three years. All the best!

@somebody

thanks for offering to help. just want to find out what routes my profile is best suited to, last yr i got 2 morgan stanley's final assement day (glasgow branch) but i did not attend cos i felt i still wanted to remain in engr. then i was being considered for Operation Analyst with initial training in london

I have now made up my mind to eplore opportuntites in IB again, but dont really know hw 2 go about it, cos tradition routes are for people with first degree from top univ or people with top mbas, MG was considering me based on my MSc in engr, plus i have 2 yrs experience in engr

Any tips on what routes best suits my background wud be helpful

i had 2.1 mech engr from naija and Msc oil and gas engr from UK, i cant afford to study for MBA in any of those top biz sch, but i have the aptitude and tenacity reqg to succeed in the highly pressurised industry

looking forward to your tips

@Somebody,
Thanks a lot for the information.But na wa o!!!I was really hoping u'll tell me its not true.So even if i attach  the relevant pages of my passport,it would make no difference?This 3yr stay na real wa.Then there is no advantage over the non-citizens.would i be able to make 10,000 pounds within 6months?thats the amount bham charges international students for the course i want to study.What then is the point applying now?
I am very discouraged and almost crying about this thing. cry
I really do wish u can tell me its not true.
How about applying for economics at stirling?
Thanks.

@somebody
hello there, thanks for all your information, i'd like to ask you about the opportunities that exist in london for  a computer scientist. i have a 2.1 from a nigerian university and ive gotten  provisional admmission for an  Msc Software Engineering course at London Metropolitan Uni(london Met) to start in Feb 2008. id love to know if its a good school and also how easy it is to migrate from a student visa to the international graduate scheme program.

also if you know any good moderaltly priced ( between £8500-£10000) school that is good in software engineering, and also has provision for a feburary start (because i really don't want to wait till sept 2008) ill be really greatfull.

thanks ,ill be waiting to hear from you.

im laughing my ass out. really some of you could be lucky finding a white collar job here in the uk. but lets face the reality, if ur coming here to work dont expect it to be all nice and green, even former managing directors back in nigeria with highly skilled migrant visas dont find it easy at first, it might take years till you hit a good job.

advice::: immediately you land uk, just register with job agencies for industrial, catering, cleaning, sales job.

do you think it's easy for anyone to move from one environment to another and fit right in or employ servants,cleaners and drivers like they do back home? you make money but you work for it thats how it should be
undecided
