There's really nothing happy about ash wednesday. It's a day that begins the 40 days of fasting, abstinence and repentance for Catholics. Its more of a solemn day when we don't eat meat, eat only one full meal and go for ash signing and stations of the cross.

Even the Ash Wednesday practice of having one’s forehead signed with ashes has a biblical parallel. Putting ashes on one’s head was a common biblical expression of mourning (1 Sm 13:19, Est 4:1, Is 61:3; see also Est 4:3, Jer 6:26, Ez 27:30, Dn 9:3, Mt 11:21, Lk 10:13). By having the sign of the cross made with ashes on their foreheads, Catholics mourn Christ’s suffering on the cross and their own sins, which made that suffering necessary.

Anoda event in christian traditions.
I tend to ask: why chosing a wednesday?
Why d no. of days to easter?
Why is ash used?
Why from palm?
Why must it be rubbed on forehead?
Is that not similar to a modification of traditional cultism?
Why do only catholics do it?
What is the actual history of the practice?
Who started it?
Why is it done?
Where is it mentioned in the bible?
Why can't it be scrapped or replaced with just preaching/service?
Who can answer these questions?
What is the truth?

at the bolded,it is not only catholics that do it, most orthodox christians do it too
Ash was used in the bible as a sign of repentance and being sorry for sins committed
if u count from today till easter sunday (excluding Sundays) it's 40 days wc signifies 40 days Jesus prayed and fasted so it just tells us to do the same in preparation for easter.

Howcomes:
Idolatry

To each their own,
The lessons of Ash Wednesday is deep and can only be appreciated by discerning minds.

The Catholic doctrine which ash Wednesday represents reminds man of vainness of life, teaching us all to lead a worthy life in view of the hereafter.

A life of humility, piety, love, alms giving/sacrifice, help for the poor, self denial are some of the virtues preached by the church during lenten season and even beyond.

You call it idolatry but am sure your church(if you're a christian anyway) also celebrate Easter same day with Catholics even when they don't know how the day is arrived at.

My piece.

So you read somewhere in a book that easter is ishtar and you immediately believed it? SMH how ignorant. So you don't know that in all the ancient Christian centers like Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antioch and all non English speaking lands it is called Pascha?
