>>> Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) marry a child? <<<

People wonder and ask,
Did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) marry a child?
Was this a normal practice 1400 years ago?
What was the wisdom behind it?

According to authentic sources, the Prophet Muhammad married Aisha (RA), when she was 6 years old, and the marriage was consummated after she was 9. However, it is important to understand things in their historical context. For instance, it would be silly to ask, what kind of milk did they drink 1400 years ago. Or what kind of engine did they have back then.

Therefore, one must understand that things 1400 years ago were very different from now, times have changed and so humans. 1400 years ago, it was very common for women to marry at a young age. It is a historical fact that girls from the ages of 9 to 14 were married off in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.
For example:
Saint Augustine in 350AD married a 10 year old girl
King Richard II in 1400AD married a 7 year old
Henry VIII in 15000AD married a 6 year old girl

Even in the Bible, "but save for yourselves every GIRL who has never slept with a man" Numbers 31:17-18

According to Catholic Encyclopedia, "Mary the mother of Jesus was 12 when she married 99 year old Joseph"
Before 1929, Church of England minister could marry 12 year olds in Britain.
Before 1983, Catholic canon laws permitted priests to marry off brides at the age of 12.

A lot of people are unaware that in the Delaware (United States) in 1880, the minimum age for marriage was 7 years old and in California was 10 years.
Even now, the marriage age for some states are
12 for Massachusetts
13 for New Hampshire
14 in New York

At the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), those who refused his message tried every method and strategy to discredit him. They were always looking for opportunities to attack him verbally and even physically. Some of this verbal abuse consisted of calling him magician, soothsayer, crazy. However, they never thought to point out or object to his marriage to Aisha (RA). Why? Because it was the norm of the society, meaning it was completely normal.

Do you know that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had only one wife, Khadijah, throughout the first 54 years of his life?
Did you know that she was a widow?
Did you know that she was 15 years older than him?
He (PBUH) spent his entire youth with her.
He was committed to her until and after her death by keeping ties with her friends.

What about Aisha, was she a child when she agreed to marry Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?

Note: The age of puberty varies throughout different times and different places.

According to scientific references, "Girls might enter full-blown puberty anytime between the ages of 9 and 15" LiveScience.
Also, "The average temperature of the country is considered the chief factor with regard to menstruation and sexual puberty" Women:An Historical Gynecological, and Anthropological Compedium Volume 1, Lord & Bransby, 1988, p.563

So was Aisha a child? No she was not!
So what about the wisdom behind this marriage?
God always knows best!
But the marriage of Aisha (RA) was an instruction from God (Bukhari Volume 5: Book 58: Hadith 235)
Aisha (RA) narrated to us more than 2200 hadiths (sayings) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Aisha (RA) was exceptionally intelligent, and since she married the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) at a young age, she was able to learn so much from him. She later played an important role as a teacher, expert and interpreter of Islam
So there was so much wisdom behind this marriage!
For those who do not know the Prophet Muhammad (PHUB), He did not come to seek worldly pleasure, but he warned us against them!
His companion described him as a man of morality and they said he was shyer than a virgin in seclusion.
When believers asked him an awkward question, he would cover his face out of shyness.
He taught us that each religion is know for a kind of morality and the morality of Islam is Shyness/Modesty.

So it is ok to marry a child?
Btw, I tot he was a prophet? So it is permissible to him because it was right in his society back then?
I deduce therefore dt if Muhammed were around now he'll probably be a gay hippie or a corrupt politician because dt is d norm of today.

Such a long epistle in defense of a murderous pedophile.

Though I don't care how muhammed lived his life(though I must confess that his action has caused many to boldly jump into paedeophile under the cover of muhammedic islam),but its necessary I correct you of the falsehood you tried to sell with christianity.
This correction is for you,any reader you may have misled with this and the possible source of your knowledge.
Mary, the mother of Jesus was not 12 when she got married.
First, when she perceived that she has become pregnant, she went to visit her cousin, elizabeth, not aunt, not mother, cousin. Now,being cousins means that though there can be some age gap between them, but they are contemporaries and friends(luke1:39-40). And Elizabeth herself has well aged and has even long entered menopause. Hence, mary couldn't be a teenager, not to talk of 12.
Secondly,it was also written that on getting pregnant, she relocated from her house to Elizabeth's where she stayed with her for 3months before going back to her own house(see luke1:56). I don't think a 12year old or even a teenager will be having her own house at that time and even now.
Thirdly, her ability to independently move from her city to another for 3months clearly shows that we are dealing with a mature woman, not a teen or even less.
Fourthly, she was addressed throughout by both the angel and her cousin as a woman(see luke1:28,42)
Fifthly, read her songs of exaltation from Luke1:46-55. It clearly shows the intelliegence of a full grown woman who is knowledgable in her ancestral history as she is of spiritual things.
As for Joseph, though no mention was ever made anywhere in the bible of his age,the bible describes him as a just man which modern scholars will refer to as a perfect gentleman.
Also,12years after Jesus was born, his parents were still going to Jerusalem for their annual thanksgiving and this was a journey of days by road. That would have put Joseph's age at 111 if he married her at 99. Had it been so,the bible would have mentioned it as chronological order was very important then.
Please, while we do not care about the lifestyle of your prophet,I plead that you do not spread falsehood of christianity in trying to justify this pitiable act of his.
Selah.

Listen op, you've gotta stop this and educate yourself.

This is a fabricated hadith. It doesn't matter it's in sahih Bukhari.

The hadith is faulted. And by all means it contradicts another similar hadith.

And besides, both hadith are in conflict with Qur'an. Please stop embarrassing Muslims.

Stop slandering the prophet. Learn methodology in Islam. Thank you

As for you PastorKun, the man who hides behind lady's skirt, dont forget to look into thread created by your girl friend. Your christian faith is trashed there. Why did you run away from there?. Take a look at it...

The level of hatred is pathetic.

@eyeview, nice analogies. Please use the same intellectual power to properly read the post. I did not manufacture the facts.
@pastorkun, ahaa pastor, the post is not too complicated to be understood. Blind hatred, please be delivered.
@redoi.. & bobby.. : please reread the post. You missed the point 100%. Some of the points are:
- A child in Arabia 1400 years ago is not our own definition of child now
- Even in today's world, age/maturity level differs in different places
- He married her after being with another woman (who died) for decades. Was he a womanizer?
Finally, it is not about doing what is in vogue. You can do what is in vogue as long as ***it does not contradict your religion***!
Unlike other religions, Islam is a culture with established (not by whims of religious leaders) principles for EVERYTHING. The principle here is that you marry according to the definition of maturity in your locality.
I hope i have simplified it enough. O ga o o o, people shaa.

@empiree, pls note:
- This is our religion and why should it not be discussed? The hadith is authentic. Pls seek for knowledge.
- Why do you have to 'trash' another person's religion?

My brother, please lets not fall into the same hole these other people have fallen.
'YOU' do not accept! Na you be the religion?
We follow dictates of the religion and not what our 'mind' tells us.
From the other comments, you can see the level of confusion following the 'mind' can lead to.
True, hadith can be fabricated to attribute falsehood to the religion, but then, it is for the scholars to fish out and not just based on not liking/understanding it. I repeat, this hadith is authentic.

In ur own words Aisha at 9 was mature enuf for sex...? pardon me, but r u ok?
He married a woman 15 yrs older than him (maybe as a gold digger) and followed it up with pedophilia (as if the former justifies d latter).
Did he stop there? Nooo! He had several wives and concubines plus slaves dt he slept with. Kindly justify that recklessness.
The article tried to justify the man on vogueness of his time and I am free to extrapolate based on that.
Thank u

You think I just came up with this conclusion?. No, I have learned from different scholars on this issue. I am aware some scholars see it as authentic and they find a way to explain it. Other scholars dont.

But if you say it's authentic, then you may need to consider this

Sahih Bukhari>>Book of Good Manners
Narrated `Aisha:

I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for `Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, not yet reached the age of puberty.) (Fath-ul-Bari page 143, Vol.13)

@empiree: This is talk for another day.
The facts are in Hadiths. Unfortunately, I DONT NEED UR HELP!

Read:
Muhammad's wife Hafsa once caught him in her bed with another woman—his slave-girl, Mary the Copt. Seeking to avoid further conflict, Muhammad promised that he would stop having sex with Mary. Later, however, Muhammad received one of his infamous morally convenient revelations from Allah.

Qur'an 66:1-2—O Prophet! why do you forbid (yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you; you seek to please your wives; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Allah indeed has sanctioned for you the expiation of your oaths and Allah is your Protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise.

Here's Tafsir Jalalayn commenting on this verse:

O Prophet! Why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you, in terms of your Coptic handmaiden Māriya — when he lay with her in the house of Hafsa, who had been away, but who upon returning [and finding out] became upset by the fact that this had taken place in her own house and on her own bed — by saying, ‘She is unlawful for me!’, seeking, by making her unlawful [for you], to please your wives? And God is Forgiving, Merciful, having forgiven you this prohibition.

For further confirmation, we have the following hadith:

Sunan An-Nasa'i 3411—It was narrated from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah had a female slave with whom he had intercourse, but Aishah and Hafsah would not leave him alone until he said that she was forbidden for him. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "O Prophet! Why do you forbid (for yourself) that which Allah has allowed to you" [66:1] until the end of the verse.

Since the Qur'an is supposedly Allah's eternal Word, our Muslim friends expect us to believe that, from eternity past, Allah had nothing better to do than compose verses giving Muhammad the right to break his oath to his wives so that he could continue having sex with his slave-girl.

Selah.

This is an excellent analysis. . No where is it suggested mary was a teen.. they were both likely middle aged but definitely mature.. Empiree 9jaforlife tartar9 rilwanye001 u guys have made these allegations in the past. I hope u can learn from this smart Nairalanders. ..

However several authentic hadiths show Mohammed was in his 50s when he defiled little aisha.. see below..

From the hadith of Bukhari, volume 5, #234

"Narrated Aisha: The prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Harith Kharzraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's messenger came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age."

Bukhari vol. 7, #65:

"Narrated Aisha that the prophet wrote the marriage contract with her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: "I have been informed that Aisha remained with the prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death).""

From the hadith of Muslim, volume 2, #3309

Aisha reported: Allah’s Messenger married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house at the age of nine….

From the hadith of the Sunan of Abu Dawud, volume 2, #2116

"Aisha said, "The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven years old." (The narrator Sulaiman said: "Or six years.". "He had intercourse with me when I was 9 years old."

From "The History of Tabari", volume 9, page 131

"Then the men and women got up and left. The Messenger of God consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old. Neither a camel nor a sheep was slaughtered on behalf of me"...(The Prophet) married her three years before the Emigration, when she was seven years old and consummated the marriage when she was nine years old, after he had emigrated to Medina in Shawwal. She was eighteen years old when he died.

From the Encyclopedia of Islam, under "Aisha":

"Some time after the death of Khadija, Khawla suggested to Muhammad that he should marry either Aisha, the 6 year old daughter of his chief follower, or Sawda Zama, a widow of about 30, who had gone as a Muslim to Abyssinia and whose husband had died there. Muhammad is said to have asked her to arrange for him to marry both. It had already been agreed that Aisha should marry Djubayr Mutim, whose father, though still pagan, was friendly to the Muslims. By common consent, however, this agreement was set aside, and Muhammad was betrothed to Aisha... The marriage was not consummated until some months after the Hidjra, (in April 623, 624). Aisha went to live in an apartment in Muhammad's house, later the mosque of Median. She cannot have been more than ten years old at the time and took her toys to her new home."

Bobbysworld28:

In ur own words Aisha at 9 was mature enuf for sex...? pardon me, but r u ok?
He married a woman 15 yrs older than him (maybe as a gold digger) and followed it up with pedophilia (as if the former justifies d latter).
Did he stop there? Nooo! He had several wives and concubines plus slaves dt he slept with. Kindly justify that recklessness.
The article tried to justify the man on vogueness of his time and I am free to extrapolate based on that.
Thank u

Welcome, i hope you would be a bit more civil than ...
I also hope you read the original post. The point here is not debating age of marriage but explaining its historical context.

Islam is ***realistic*** and has rules.
Women>> Pre-Islamic period had NO RESTRICTION on women and marriage. They had no rights and were regarded as inferior species (up till 2-3 centuries ago in Europe and America). Islam allowed multiple wives but brought rights, moderation and fairness.

Slavery>>Since time immemorial, slaves have had no rights and were absolute objects (almost non-human) of their owners. Islam regulated slavery through strict rules and rights. But of course, you do not expect that it would have been banned out rightly, who would have accepted that? Rather, it put several mechanisms in place to gradually reduce class gaps.
You can confirm from history that lots of former slaves became rulers, scholars etc over the 'free born'.

We are talking about facts here, please lets leave sentiments and think straight.

Dont you get it. Hadith are graded and muslims also understood them differently. Tha doesnt mean I reject hadith. What's wrong with you. I never for once hold this particular hadith authentic because it's in conflict with Qur'an. In the videos above, the sheik ofcourse believe in the hadith tradition but that doesnt mean he accepts every hadith written by Tom, Dick and Harry.

You never heard of "Science of Hadith" before?.

Your conclusion above is not enough. First of, drop your 21st century mentality. If you can't I cant help you. Secondly, seek knowledge. There are things done thousands of years ago that you can never possibly comprehend in today's world. Overall, onus is on you. No one would give their 6yr old daughter in marriage to old man. So please do borrow yourself a brain.

●●●●● I know this. mohammed preached against burying baby girls and he standardized inheritance rights for women..women have always suffered.. even tho the bible especially the new testament makes it clear they are equal to men before Christ and must be loved by their husbands. Jesus also taught that monogamy is a principle of marriage. Mohammed says polygamy and sex slaves are allowed..their are a lot of issues with with islam on women. there is a verse on beating women..majority of hell people being women , women being less intelligent as men, temporary marriage, easy divorce, etc

before I continue I want to say I won't bother quoting verses because I assume u are not ignorant about your sources quran hadihs and their narrations. .but feel free to ask me to quote it

●●●●●●muslims often tell me this...they often use the word practical too. .

u don't realise this is the main problem with islam..don't u see the flaw in ur statement..
if u don't I can go further to explain..

Jesus says love ur enemies, marry one wife and pray for those who persecute u, don't deny him even with threat of death from others..among a long list of apparently unrealistic commands of love peace and keeping righteousness. .
this looks unrealistic and impractical. . this is one of the hundreds of reasons I know Jesus is divine and righteous beyond comprehension. no mere human thinks like this.. at least at that time..Mohamed definitely didn't 600 years later..

Salam my brother in humanity.

Empiree frist of all...ur arguement is deceitful. . apparently u ignored the names of the hadiths I quoted.. i quoted the sahih hadiths. ..the 2 Most authentic ones. .do u know better than the thousands of Islamic scholars who have affirmed it's validity. .

it should not surprise u that I know about ur grading system of hadiths in Islam. .u and other muslims have expressed shock at my knowledge of islam..i avoid the less authentic hadiths. .u know this..

At least let me acknowledge your civility. The world would be a better place if we can discuss issues like this without rancor.

Unfortunately, i am not interested in answering your new questions. I can see that you are a very active person on Nairaland regarding religious issues. If all the previous discussions did not give you answers, i have nothing to say.

Ignorance pardoned as long as your are open to learning. If so pls go through the link in the original post. http://www.thedeenshow.com/watch/2962/marriage-to-aisha

You guys have become master debaters on Nairaland, endlessly wasting people's time on directionless issues. Eagle-eyed predators carefully scouting for 'keko-keko' Muslims to capture alive or escape battered. I advice you get busy with better things as serious Muslims would not come to Nairaland for religious knowledge in the first place.

I also advice that you guys open your hearts for more sincere discussions, it pays; it always does.
