Ibadan Businessman, Olanihun, Dies At 69 by mattkelly: 7:31am On Mar 30, 2015
Ibadan, Oyo State businessman and philanthropist, Mufutau Olanihun, died of protracted illness on Sunday at the age of 69.

The circumstances leading to Olanihun’s death are still not clear but a family source who did not give her name because she was not authorised to speak on the family’s behalf confirmed his death, saying that he had been buried according to Islamic rites.

“Our father and brother is dead. He died at the age of 69 and was buried on Sunday. An appropriate family spokesperson will speak on his death at an appropriate time. We urge the public to pray for his soul and that of the loved ones he left behind,” she said.

The popular businessman broke into economic reckoning in the late 80s and early 90s when he became a pioneer importer of second-hand electronic gadgets from all over the world in Ibadan. He made a huge fortune from the business, establishing companies and he was revered for his philanthropic work, support for Islamic religion and education. He built several mosques, schools and shopping malls where his products were sold.

Olanihun was also a socialite until he withdrew from high profile public functions after the June 12, 1993 presidential election when he was accused by some prominent Yoruba elders of not supporting the late presidential quest of Chief MKO Abiola. He denied the allegation publicly and insisted that Abiola was his benefactor. He also said on paid radio and television advertorial that he was not a politician.

Among the early mourners is Alhaji Isiaq Kunle Sanni, Chairman of Muslim Community in Oyo State who described the deceased as a great philanthropist, leader and benevolent individual who would be missed by the Ummah.

“His contribution to industry and education in Nigeria will be remembered for ages. In his private capacity, he gave thousands of scholarships to the less privileged children and offered Zakah to others in need,” he said.

Olanihun is survived by wives, children and grandchildren.
