In a world where people are demanding for the demilitarization of the police, we want to start arming them with artilleries?
People that are not even meant to be moving around with assault riffles sef, that is why they are able to kill innocent civilians carelessly.
The primary weapon of most of these police units should be tasers. Lethal weapons should be allowed only when on operations requiring it or by special teams meant for quick reactions.
Maybe they should also give them armored tanks and fighter jets grin

The bigger picture

Only anarchists/liberals are demanding unarming of police , actually they want to remove police all together . No sane person will demand the same.

Demilitarization of police is a misnomer , a ruse to a bigger plot .

Arms in possession of police is not equivalent to arms carried by military.

It is a plot to destabilize countries around the world by anarchists , liberals and corporates.

After defanging and removing the police the very same anarchists will install their own armed militia to fight the resulting chaos and from then onwards it will be a route to grab power under the guise of fighting chaos. The same militias will trample the rights of people and those who do not subscribe to their ideology.

Police in many countries many not be the best but that is dependent on the country in question. Their political , judicial and administrative competence. No organization in this world is free of mistakes or prejudices. Efforts should be made to make them better but neutering them will plunge society into chaos .

It took 1000 years of evolution in policing to come up with what we have today. Does anyone think it will be that easy to replace the same. It will be a fools errand and a suicidal move.

How does one expects to fight thousands of heavily armed powerful organised crime syndicates , powerful international drugs cartels , international arms cartels , Islamist terrorists with cross border affiliations without police. Does one think police are supermans ?. One policemen gets killed the whole department is terrorised into submission. This is how things are played out in real world. Criminals are not fools or messiahs.

Problem with police is political interference in their day to day functioning , ironically the same politicians are calling for removal of police.

I say remove the politicians , 90% of the problems will disappear themselves.

Nigerian singer sentenced to death for blasphemy in Kano state

A musician in Nigeria's northern state of Kano has been sentenced to death by hanging for blaspheming against the Prophet Muhammad.

An upper Sharia court in the Hausawa Filin Hockey area of the state said Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, 22, was guilty of committing blasphemy for a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March.

Mr Sharif-Aminu did not deny the charges.

Judge Khadi Aliyu Muhammad Kani said he could appeal against the verdict.

Africa Live: Updates on this and other stories

The singer who is currently in detention, had gone into hiding after he composed the song.

Protestors had burnt down his family home and gathered outside the headquarters of the Islamic police, known as the Hisbah, demanding action against him.

Nigeria is only a secular state on paper. Many atheists and freethinkers are currently in jail and some on death row for criticising Muhammed.

Why would the USA have to resort to public channels to give information to Nigeria.

Does the possibility exist that after several intelligence information briefs to the Nigerian government. There has been no commensurate response to mitigate against the situations raised.

I think we should look at ourselves.

There were claims that when the Chibok girls were abducted USA intelligence pinpointed their location. However, the Nigerian armed forces did not act on the information.

I do not know why u have to write something as foolish as this,... So U.S is scared of Nigerian govt as to resort to the use of media.

So on what do u base yours, where did u get the information that they actually shared info, u make so many unwarranted conclusions and end up accusing pple of doing same

that the district had overtime experienced crisis over chieftaincy tussle until the state government intervened and peace returned in the community.

She said that the attackers remained unidentified while investigation has already commenced into the matter.

“Edikwu district, Ukpogbo, in Apa LGA was experiencing incessant crises over chieftaincy affairs until May 25, when the Benue government convened a peace meeting, headed by the Deputy Governor, Mr Benson Abounu to put an end to the rancour.

“Peace was restored to the area but on Aug. 10, at about 04:00hrs, information was received that about 20 armed men invaded the community and shot sporadically at members of the community.

“A team of police officers were deployed to the scene where 13 corpses were recovered. Investigation is still in progress”. She said.

A resident of the community who preferred anonmity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the attack on Edikwu community was unprovoked.

“The unknown gunmen stormed the community at the early of hours of today, shooting sporadically and burning down houses, leaving many people dead while others are still missing.”

Until the elites and politicians are ready to bring an end to the insurgency and banditry, we are still a long way to defeating it.
Every form of insurgency the country has ever witnessed has the blessing of some notable public figures who are close to the corridors of power.

The Niger Delta crisis is a case in study. Every militant who isn't in the good books of the ruling political class was either eliminated or made to disappear.
The same scenario is playing out in the north with a different geopolitical dimension.

The Norths cultural affiliation with neighboring countries, larger land mass and porous borders brings in a lot of complexity in comparison to the Niger Delta.

Na the same playbook, just revised edition
