Ethiopia withdraws troops in Somalia over 'lack of support'

Ethiopia has withdrawn troops from Somalia, where they had been battling Islamist militants.
It blames a lack of international support for the move, following the EU's recent cut in its funding for foreign troops in Somalia.
Ethiopia is a major contributor of soldiers to the Amisom, the African Union mission in the country.
Ethiopia has recently withdrawn from several other bases, which were quickly occupied by al-Shabab militants.
Officials in Somalia's Bakol region say some residents have already fled the area since the Ethiopian troops left, fearing an imminent of al-Shabab, which is part of al-Qaeda.

Ethiopian Communications Minister Getachew Reda told the BBC that the troops withdrawn from south-western Somalia were not part of Amisom.
"It is a separate batch deployed to provide support for Amisom and Somali armed forces," Mr Getachew said.
He also denied reports that the withdrawal was linked to unrest at home which led to a state of emergency being declared, saying there were enough troops to handle that.

He said the Somali army should have been in a position to move in after Ethiopia's withdrawal.
"The international community has a responsibility either to train or to support the Somali National Army," he said.
He went on to warn that indifference would only pave the way for an al-Shabab takeover.
The European Union is the main contributor of funding for Amisom. But it announced in June that its funding for the mission would be reduced by 20%.
BBC Somali's Farham Jimale says Ethiopia is not the first provider of troops in Somalia to complain about a lack of international support.
Burundi, Uganda and Djibouti, which also contribute to Amisom, have made similar complaints in the past, he says.

Namibian President Urges More Women to Join the Military

President Hage Geingob, who is also the commander-in-chief of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), said he wants to see greater representation for women at all levels of the country’s defence force.

He made the remarks on Friday [October 21] when he commissioned 42 army cadets in Rundu. Out of the 42 cadets who completed the 17-month intensive training, only four are female.

“I’m sure that if we all made a concerted effort in motivating and encouraging female soldiers it will give more young women the confidence to join the army, navy and air force,” Geingob said.

“Therefore, I challenge more women to join the NDF and urge those already in the force to aim as high as possible and assume staff and command appointments in the NDF.”

According to President Geingob, the NDF is an institution which brings great pride to the Namibian nation. “Our armed men and women are the sentinels that stand guard over our Namibian house,” he said.

“It therefore gives me great pride to witness the ushering in of new recruits, young Namibians who have chosen the path of discipline, sacrifice … for the purpose of safeguarding our peace, democracy and rule of law.”

Geingob further said the young recruits have walked through the doors of the NDF military school, whose vision is to provide training to all members of the NDF to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to maintain the required standards of professionalism in the force.

Given the professional conduct and discipline executed by the young recruits on the day, Geingob said the NDF military school is living up to its vision and mission.

The regular commissioning course is the 8th of its kind in the history of the NDF and is meant to train identified members of the NDF who have displayed the potential to become officers by possessing good leadership qualities and fitness, which have come to the fore during interviews and medical checkups.

The regular commissioning training is designed to train, transform and arm cadet officers with the necessary military skills, knowledge and behaviour befitting officers that in future will be able to train educate and lead a platoon in the NDF during war and in peace.

The military school’s curriculum covers basic soldiery skills, conventional warfare, leadership and administration in order to mould and develop students as knowledgeable officers, capable of steering the NDF to even greater heights.

President Geingob urged the soldiers to know the social significance and meaning of courage. “You can only have courage if you have character first. Be a woman and man of character in peace so that if and when the time calls you will become a man or woman of courage in war,” he said.

Somali General Assassinated in Mogadishu

Armed Al Shabaab assassins have shot and killed a senior Somali army officer in Mogadishu, the latest in series of targeted assassinations in the east Africa country.

A witness speaking on condition of anonymity said two pistol-wielding men thought to be Al Shabaab members gunned down the officer who was identified as Gen Abdulaziz Araye.

The shooting took place in Mogadishu’s Waberi district on Monday [October 24] afternoon.

The gunmen fled the scene shortly after the killing. Somali security forces have subsequently reached the site of the crime and conducted a manhunt for the suspects.

The militant group of Al Shabaab said it was behind the murder of the army general. Somali security officials did not comment on the killing.

Many New Armed Groups Established in Nigeria

A total of 18 new armed groups have sprung in Nigeria in the last 17 months, according to a report by a crisis-monitoring group.

The report puts Nigeria well-ahead of any other African nation, as the country with the fastest-growing number of new armed dissident groups.

In apparent reflection of a poor crisis-management mechanism, the report by the Public Security & Safety Advocacy department of Intersociety shows that in the first 15 months of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, as many as 18 disaffected groups took up arms across the country.

Painting a gloomy portrait of regional security, the report showed that as at August 2016, at least 28 African countries were embroiled in internal conflicts fuelled by a total of 220 armed opposition and insurgency groups. Of these the Democratic Republic of Cong leads the pack with 36 armed opposition groups, followed by Libya with 28. South Sudan comes next with 26 warring groups while Nigeria is fourth with 20 armed groups.

Whilst Nigeria’s ranking might not at first appear alarming, crisis monitors are already hitting the panic button considering that the country has jumped from its 13th position in May 2015 to fourth position in August 2016; a record time of just 15 months. The number, therefore, of non-state armed or resistance groups that have taken up arms against the Federal Republic of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari has risen from two on May 29, 2015 to 20 in August 2016.

The Intersociety report showed that in May 2015 the number of active armed opposition groups (AOGs) in Nigeria was two: the Boko Haram terror group and Fulani armed nomadic herdsmen. Hitherto armed groups such as the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and the Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF) were disarmed, demobilized and granted amnesty in 2009 under the leadership of late Umaru Yar’Adua. There was also a splinter group of Boko Haram called Ansaru, which was later absorbed by Boko Haram under the Islamic State West Africa, ISWA.

Today however, the number of armed groups in Nigeria has grown in multiples. They include the Islamic State West Africa and the Movement for Unity & Jihad in West Africa – both offshoots of ISIS and Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb; the Boko Haram; Armed nomadic herdsmen and the resurrected and re-armed Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.

Others are the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force; the Niger Delta Liberation Front; Niger Delta Avengers; Biafra Avengers; Red Egbesu Water Lions; Asawana Deadly Force of the Niger Delta, the Adaka Boro Marine Commandos; the Utorogon Liberation Movement; Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force; and the Joint Revolutionary Council of the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force. Yet others are the Red Scorpion; the Ultimate Warriors of the Niger Delta; the Niger Delta Red Squad; Niger Delta Vigilante; the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate; the Ijaw/Oduduwa Militant Movement (in Ogun and Lagos States) and the Agatu Warriors in Benue State.

The report also mentioned Nigeria as the third largest defence and security spender in Africa after Algeria and Angola. While Nigeria spends about $4 billion, the figure for Algeria is $10.4 billion and Angola $6 billion.

Other African countries mentioned in the report with large number of armed opposition groups (AOGs) are Sudan, 19; Mali, 17; Central African Republic, 10; Egypt, 9; Ethiopia, 8; Algeria, 4; Eritrea, 4; and Somaliland, 4. Uganda has 3 while Mauritania, Kenya, Chad and Angola have 2 each. Morocco (Western Sahara), Tunisia, Senegal, Rwanda, Congo Republic, Puntland, Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Cameroon and Burundi are listed in the report as having one armed opposition group each.

Suspected US Drone Crashes at Al Shabaab Base

A suspected unmanned drone is reportedly crashed at Al shabaab area near Kismayo town, the provincial capital of Lower Jubba region of southern Somalia on Sunday [October 16].

Pro-al shabaab media outlets, citing Senior Al shabaab commanders reported the drone was belonged to the Unites states military and has been conducting a surveillance on the militants’ activities.

Al Shabaab, which is affiliated with al Qaeda, said it seized the wreckage of the drone after it crashed in Qudus village, about 50Km west of Kismayo city, the coastal town which serves as a seat for Jubbaland.

The militants confirmed that a drone had crashed in their stronghold city of Qudus, but they did not say if they had downed it with an anti-aircraft missile.

NIGER DELTA YOUTH LEADERS APPEAL FOR PEACE IN THE REGION

The Coalition of Niger Delta Youth Leaders has appealed to the youths in the Niger Delta Region to embrace peace and give the Federal Government all the needed support to bring peace to the Region. The appeal was contained in the speech by the Leader of the Youth Coalition, Comrade Emeni Ibe when the group visited the Defence Headquarters.

Comrade Ibe said that the Niger Delta Youth Leaders were in Defence Headquarters to add their voice to many other patriotic citizens of our great nation who were commending the military for subduing terrorism and other vices across the nation.

The Youth group pledged its unflinching support to the amnesty programme of the Federal Government which it noted has helped many youths of the area in the field of training and education with many of erstwhile agitators now economically independent. The Team Leader called on co-Niger Delta youth comrades to shield their swords and embrace dialogue with the government to bring lasting peace and development to the Niger Delta Region. He maintained that there can never be any development in the absence of peace.

While thanking the Youth Leaders for the gesture, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans at Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Bashir Saidu, said that what Nigeria required at this time is peace to bring about development and to attract foreign investors to our dear nations. He appealed to other youths in the Niger Delta to emulate the Coalition of Youth Leaders by supporting the effort of government for rapid development in the Niger Delta region.

guess this means you partially agree with me... because I'm not privy to the direct feed from the drones... only what I see on the net (Pictures and videos). My comment is simply on the picture quality I've seen. Kudos to you for your efforts... believe it or not, it has improved the image of the armed forces significantly.
