PRESS RELEASE

MORE BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS SURRENDER TO TROOPS OF OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE

Four Boko Haram terrorists who voluntarily surrendered to troops of Operation Lafiya Dole operating around Kumshe were today handed over to the Headquarters Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole, in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri. The terrorists who claimed they are from the Abubakar Shekau faction comprised 3 men, one woman and 3 children. Two of the men were Boko Haram Amirs (Commanders) , while the third man was a Boko Haram Medic, who provided medical treatments to wounded insurgents in the field. The only woman among them is a wife to one of the Amirs and held a position as one of the women leaders amongst the female terrorists , while the children, comprising two girls and a boy are offsprings of the surrendered terrorists.

Speaking during the handover, the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas stated that the foot soldiers of the Boko Haram terrorists group have been deceived and fooled by their leaders for too long, making them believe that they will be killed by the military, if they surrender to troops. He assured all insurgents who are willing to surrender that they will not be killed, but rather, will be deradicalized and rehabilitated in the Federal Government's Operation Safe Corridor.

General Nicholas called on all Boko Haram insurgents to abandon the group's meaningless and futile struggle and come out from their hideouts to voluntarily surrender to troops nearest to their location .

In a chat with journalists at the handing over of the insurgents, the Theatre Commander disclosed that as part of Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities earmarked for the celebration of the Nigerian Army Day for year 2018 (NADCEL), Operation Last Hold will be conducted in the North East theatre of operation during which Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) will be encouraged to relocate to their communities to resume farming activities . He added that the Nigerian Army will provide security to the locals in their farming areas and also assist them in their farming projects. The Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai will flag off the project and encourage the IDPs to return to their farm lands. He called on well meaning Nigerians to support this initiative by providing farming implements and seedlings to the locals. He further pleaded with the Bornu State Government to help sensitize and mobilise the locals on the initiative.

COMMANDER MULTINATIONAL JOINT TASK FORCE BRIEFS MEDIA AND STRATEGIC PARTNERS IN N'DJAMENA

--- GIVES UPDATE ON OPERATION AMNI FAKAT

The Force Commander, Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Major General Lucky Irabor today briefed the media and Strategic Partners in N'Djamena, Chad, and gave update on the ongoing offensive operations in the Lake Chad Basin.

Speaking at the occasion, Major General Irabor observed that Boko Haram terrorism like other similar conflicts create complex emergencies which attract humanitarian, military and other interventions. He added that for such interventions to succeed, it is imperative for responsible actors to share and disseminate information. This he noted was the rationale for MNJTF's effort in providing information about its activities on a regular basis.

Continuing, the Force Commander noted that the Mandate of the MNJTF among other responsibilities, empowers it to "create a safe and secure environment in the areas affected by the activities of Boko Haram terrorism and other terrorist groups, in order to significantly reduce violence and other abuses, including sexual and gender based violence, in full compliance with international law". He added that the ongoing operation is in the spirit of the mandate.

Major General Irabor disclosed that Operation ANMI FAKAT is to consolidate on the gains of Operation RUWAN KADA which was conducted between January and June 2017. The Force Commander informed the gathering that the current operation which was flagged off on 5 April 2018 is already yielding substantial operational dividends. The Force Commander listed human and equipment casualties inflicted on Boko Haram terrorists by the Multinational Force as;

59 killed in Action.

5 Terrorists captured.

3 suicide bombers killed.

3 Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices destroyed.

1each of 81 and 82mm mortars and bombs captured.

One 122mm Artillery gun and its prime Mover captured.

6 Gun Trucks destroyed.

Fuel dump, food stores and communication platform destroyed.

Gashigar, Arege and Metele cleared of terrorists.

Several motorcycles destroyed.

However, the Force Commander noted that his forces recorded 22 Killed in Action, 75 wounded, a Scorpion tank and truck each damaged. Major General Irabor explained that the high casualty ratio of his troops was due to indirect fire and Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device attack by terrorists, but assured that steps have been taken to forestall a reoccurrence. The Force Commander hinted that already 50% of injured troops have been treated and discharged. He assured the audience and people in the Lake Chad Basin Commission countries of the determination of the MNJTF in conjunction with national forces to deal decisively with Boko Haram terrorism, as Operation ANMI FAKAT continues.

The Force Commander thanked strategic and international partners, troops contributing countries and other stake - holders for the support and encouragement so far given to the Multinational Joint Task Force.

Please disseminate this information to the general public.
