Dude you don't know what you 're saying. Back then the Chadians and Cameroonians know what will hit them if they infringe on Nigerian territory. Today they do it with reckless abandon, killing, burning whole villages. The Super Tucano is a specialised aircraft against a specific kind of target. It's light skin and slow speed means it will be blotted out of the sky by enemy aircraft or surface to air missiles. Nigeria needs an AIR FORCE, not a special forces air force. O boy...a nation like Nigeria cannot afford a modern air force? Are we that bavkward really? We can put hundreds of millions to put satellites into orbit, $300 million for peave keeping but yet cannot buy modern 4th generation fighters?

Bro, Tucano is being delivered from 2020. The CAS has even asked them to expedite the first two.

Yes like we keep buying in batches of one or two. Hopefully within thus decade the first 3 JF-17 might arrive. It will take Nigeria the year 2055 to field one squadron. By the times that happens the platforms will be all but obselete. You really are gonna put the Super Tucano as the frontline of the Nigerian Air Force? With pride?

It's still crap. It is not an air superiority fighter and will not survive 5 minutes against supersonic fighter jets. Nigeria needs to address its lack of air superiority fighter rather than wait for the innevitabilty to happen. Every country buying Super Tucanos are doing so as a low cost measure to 4th generation fighters. Nigeria is doing the opposite. We are buying the Super Tucano as Nigeria's most high-tech warplane. Completely worthless in the strategic sense.
Look how you're waving back & forth. Wasn't it Close Air support before? Isn't it a complete idiot that would think a Tucano would serve as Air superiority?

This is a shame. ...we can do better and you know it. Internal conflict or not..any nations air force that fields this today ad its workhorse is not a serious air Force.

Frequent Statements and Questions:

This is a left over by the US Air Force
Absolutely no. These are manufactured for the Lebanese Air Force. In fact, the US AF is currently evaluating this aircraft in order to obtain it for its counter insurgency operations. Read more here.

This aircraft is very old (or from WWII era) & no longer used because it is turbo-propeller.
The original EMB 314 was introduce in 2003, so no it is not an "old" aircraft. The aircraft is used by major armies across the world for the specific mission it was made for. Some are probably surprised to see such an advanced cockpit (check up).

An AA gun can bring it down
No, unless it is flying within range of the AA gun. Check the info about altitudes mentioned up. In reality, it is most likely that a non-radar AA gun (commonly operated by insurgents) would be taken out before the operator can even see or hear the aircraft.

Instead of advancing we are going back in time. Who uses propeller aircraft anymore?
Wrong. Air forces with some of the most advanced jets over there are turning to turbo-propeller aircraft for their counter-insurgency and close air support operations. The market is growing with solution such as the Super Tucano, Cessna AC-208B, Air Tractor AT-802, and AT-6 Beechcraft.

This is a slow aircraft
The aircraft is fast and agile. It can reach a maximum speed of 590 km/h. In fact, it has the speed for the mission it is intended for.
Only jet fighters like F-16 or F-35 can be effective for the NAF operations... grin

Sending an aircraft that is expensive to procure and to operate to counter-insurgency proved to be very costly. Consuming the air frame life, expensive spare parts, and expensive jet fuel, have led armies, including the US, to consider aircraft such as the A-29.

We could have acquired second hand older generation jets
The technology advancement in the A-29 surpasses any old jet capability.

We should have acquired F-16/SU35
For now, that's a far reach. Beyond, the A-29 would remain the aircraft preferred for the mission it is made for.

It took too long to receive them, ISIS is not anymore in Lebanon all because of the dreaded A-29
Procuring aircraft is not shopping a car. Moreover, these aircraft are made to order, and those who placed their orders first, have the priority. The real problem is all the causes that lead the NAF to take too long to place an order, on top of which is financing.

Propeller aircraft are in general an old technology
Many modern military (and civil) aircraft still use propellers especially where speed isn't the main concern. Whether a military transport, UAV, or light-attack, turbo/propeller are still providing the power & safety needed for these aircraft to conduct their designed missions. Jet is not equal to modern, like turbo-propeller is not equal to old.

Chad only operates one grounded Mig with two been placed on order. Most of her SU25 jets and Mi Helicopters are been destroyed by a terrible hurricane storm last year.

What 're you talking bout? I am talking bout the need for the air force to start modernising its attack fleet. You brought up the Super Tucano, which in my view does not justify the $609 million price tag. You 're arguing on a linear fashion here, and as usual when you have nothing else to say you all resort to name calling and shaming. I don't care much bout the Tucano..It's a good enough plane..the Nigerian Air Force will be in much better shape with $600 million. What countryspends $600 million on an aircraft yet lacks modern fighter aircraft or Air Defence systems? This is not fantasy...its common sense. Why is the NAF wasting resources on social programes and specialised platforms that's not even slated for delivery until 2022 while the nation is in a state of war. The tempo of operations is more than the airframe of these platforms were originally designed for. The air force is deployed in all geopolitical zones of d country, overstretched. Nigeria needs quantity and quality. A quite modern 4th generation fighters or increase the size of its current fleet. Is that too ambitious to ask for?

I know you and I know you are smarter and more pragmatic than you sound. While you are making excuses for the sorry state of the air force real lives are impacted on the ground. You are of the view Nigeria is not capable of operating a modern air force. You ignore the impact the falling end strength and problematic force with its troubled acquisition and development programs, threaten Nigeria's air superiority over its rapidly modernising rivals. Nigeria is not Togo. Building better accommodations and other morale boosting stuff should not stop Nigeria from modernizing its air force. I am talking about combat arm of the service. You 're telling me that a country as wealthy and relatively developed as Nigeria cannot field a modern air force bristling with modern aircraft?really? That's fantasy to you? Nigeria must remain limited because so far Nigeria's sovereignty is not being challenged by an external power.

In order to enhance our growing Military Industrial Complex and boost local production, the NA is collaborating with some international and indigenous companies in the local production of helicopters, UAVs, radios, vehicles, weapon and equipment spares as well as combat materiel. The companies include SAT-COM NAMIBIA, NTRC PAKISTAN, Innoson Vehicle Motors, Proforce Nigeria Limited and Nigerian Machine Tools amongst others. This is in line with the Federal Government’s drive to boost local content patronage which holds a very good prospect.

Dude. You are focusing on issues limited on scope. ..almost perfunctory by nature as its the job of the AF to provide these things. I'm saying the Nigerian Air Force has zero interest in fleet modernisation on scale. We will not fight Boko Haram forever. The force thats more vested in the Boko Haram insurgency is the army. The Air Force has the time and resources to revamp the service. For some reason the AF seem hell bent on competing with the Army for combat roles, social programs for TV, sporting events and building more and more Ground forces for deployment, rather than improve the capability of the air force with more combat aircraft, air defense etc. The JF-17 negotiations have been on going since 2014. TheTsaigumi UAV, while a welcome development us not ground breaking. The fleet is just too small and overstretched. $80 million will net you ten SU-25. $50 million between three and 5Mig-29s. The F-7N fleet could be expanded by low cost platforms of similar type to 20.In the absence of more interceptors air defence units with mobile short range caps could be acquired and gradually integrated....so many things the air force could do. It gets boring and embarrassing the ribbon cutting ceremonies of gyms, houses, school etc.

After depleting Nigeria's foreign reserve on ten aircrafts to be delivered 2025, an extra $1 billion is sure to cause outrage. Nigeria spends billions each year with no visible corresponding assets for anyone to see. At this point it becomes a way to siphon money on deals based on long-term delivery, making immediate accountability impossible until its years past.
