The max speed is mach 2 not mach 1.2. Why do you think it's an interceptor? It's way faster than alpha jet but last less than an hour in air which makes it less effective for COIN. Tucano on the other hand will last 8 hours in air, carrying better guns, missiles and avionics not to talk of the ISR capability.

The Super Tucano is not a fighter aircraft. It's not a fighter jet but a turbo prop subsonic aircraft with specialized air to ground capabilities. It will not survive 10 minutes against fighter jets. It cannot outrun or out-manoeuvre an anti-aircraft missile. It's useful only agsinst low level localised conflict where air superiority is a given...and I hopeby 2020 we are still not battling Boko Haram. For a price tag of $600 million for ten units its a complete waste of resources with little strategic gains. If we cannot invest in air defense batteries then we certainly need a lot more than 9 aircraft to perform that role.

The deal was for $593 and not $600, The package includes the aircraft engine spare part for the 12 aircrafts, weapons & munition, training of pilots & maintemace crew, aircraft hanger and facilities to support the program, according to a 3 August publication announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
