A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF RSM (LATER CAPT) YAMUSA ZAKARI KUMASI (THE LONGEST SERVING RSM OF NMS)

RSM (Later Capt) Yamusa Zakari was born in the year 1924 in a commercial town of KUMASI in the South Western part of what was then known as Gold Coast (Now Ghana) to Nigerian Parents who were originally from a small town called Masi, in the present day Katsina State. Zakari came to be known soon as “KUMASI” a nickname which soon came to displace his authentic surname. He was nicknamed Kumasi because he came from a town called Kumasi at Ghana. He enlisted in to the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) on the 2nd of Jan 1944 at its depot in Zaria. NA/132247 Zakari Yamusa, quickly settle down to life in the Depot at Zaria under the command of Capt NC Cornish. He soon began to distinguished himself and was particularly good in drill and other courses which demanded high levels of discipline, team-work, concentration and co-ordination. His superiors and commanding officers were bound to take notice soon and just after 9 months of his passing out, he was promoted to the rank of Lance-Corporal. Seven days later while he was still celebrating his promotion, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. On May 30th 1945, seventeen months after his enlistment into the RWAFF, he was promoted again to the rank of Sergeant while most of his mates who were initially enlisted together were yet Privates and Lance Corporals. Indeed 1945 was particularly eventful for Zakari because he was redeployed to South East Asia, to Burma to take part in the final Allied push against the Japanese with which he played a vital role in that war. Following the Japanese surrender on the 5th of Aug 1945, Nigerian troops started returning from Burma in early 1946 and on his return to Nigeria, he was selected to attend the NCO Cadre Course at the West African Practical Training Center which was run under administrative guidance of NRTC, now Depot Nigerian Army. At that time, there was yet provision for the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Queens Own Regiment, so all qualified NCO’s were promoted directly to Warrant Officer (Grade Two). Zakari Yamusa fared very well through-out the course, and on Nov 1st 1951, he was duly promoted to the rank of WO11. Three years later, WO11 Zakari Yamusa was selected to attend the very competitive Hythe Selection Course at the West African Command School, Accra in the then Gold Coast where he obtained Grade “A” at the end of the course. In the early fifties, Zakari was posted as an instructor in the RWAFF and subsequently Boys Company in the year 1957 from NRTC (now Depot Nigerian Army). Just as the school was being asked to play a more active role in churning out boys who would replace the departing British, Zakari settled down earnestly to work with his wards, and it was no surprise when in Oct 1959, on the eve of Nigerian’s independence, he was again promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer 1 and was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), the post in which he was to leave an indelible imprint in the Nigerian Armed Forces. The years during which Kumasi was RSM at the school were years when the Nigerian Army underwent phenomenal expansion and demanded an unprecedented supply of officer’s materials. RSM Zakari knew better than anyone else that a great deal needed to be done to nurture and produce the potential young officers needed to remedy the desperate situation of the Country at that time. It cause great sadness for RSM Kumasi to see some of his boys whom he had trained and molded in to one united and disciplined army fighting each other on opposite sides during the Nigerian Civil War. He spent the next 21 years of his life training and nurturing young NMS boy who would later become great men in the history of our country Nigeria. During the Nigerian Civil War,some SNCO’s from NMS were granted field commission and equally, RSM Yamusa was initially drafted for but on a second though, replaced with another SNCO because the then Commandant of NMS, Col TB Ogundeko felt that the school had to be open throughout the civil war years and the school can’t afford the absence of such RSM. RSM Zakari was however given a field commission to the rank of a lieutenant to which he could not hang on the uniform but was effected and thus the salary was also upgraded to fit in his new rank so that he could remain on the job he knew best to do. Based on the recommendations of Col TB Ogundeko to the Army HQ, WO1 Zakari Yamusa was promoted in Feb 1978 to the substantive rank of Captain in the Nigerian Army. Capt Yamusa Zakari Kumasi acted as the OC Administration in NMS for the next 2 months. During those 2 months he acted as the OC Admin, it was obvious that his career in the Army was finally coming to an end having served the Army for 34 years. On 15th April,1978 Capt Zakari Yamusa Kumasi began his terminal leave and a few months later, he was pulled out of service in a colorful ceremony which drew the curtain over a distinguished career. Capt Zakari had consistently maintained a distinguished service record throughout his careers, he earned the following military decoration:
• African Star Defence Medal – ASDM
• War Medal – WM
• Nigerian Independence Medal – NIM
• Member of the Order of the Niger – MON
After his retirement from the Nigerian Army, he still woke up to each new day with a sense of nostalgia for the drill and a passion for the parade ground. As he lay awake in the early morning before sunrise, he could still hear in his inner ears, the call of bugle, the stamping of feet and the roar of orders to the boys on the field. His spirit was still very much with the boys on the boys in the school but his body now had to adjust to the realities of an entire different existence.
In Jan 1985, Zakari Kumasi had a dream. In that dream, he came across some Arabic inscriptions which he could not decipher, so he called on a knowledgeable Imam who later translated the dream to him that his days were drawing to an end. A few days later, a friend of his who had recently left the army came to meet him and complained about leaving the army without receiving terminal entitlement. The friend of his retired from NDA which was then commanded by an Ex-boy who RSM Zakari had trained far back at NMS. RSM Kumasi ever ready to lend a hand to others promised to meet with the NDA Commandant and ensure that his friend’s problem was solved. It was on his journey from Zaria to NDA in Kaduna that a tragedy struck. A careless trailer driver had packed his huge truck on the road without any caution his huge truck on the road without any caution or warning to other approaching vehicles. The unsuspecting driver of the Peugeot 504 saloon car in which RSM Kumasi was travelling crashed his car into the trailer before he could apply his brakes.
Kumasi was seriously wounded and was rushed to the 44 NARHK. For 17 days, the doctors and nurses battled to save his life but on the 20th Feb 1985, Capt Zakari Kumasi breathed his last. Indeed the news of his death threw the nations in to grief and mourning.

RECOLLECTIONS OF EX-BOYS ON RSM YAMUSA ZAKARI KUMASI
Commodore Areola (1962-1966 Set)
“ One time KUMASI made us laugh was sometimes in May 1962, when the wife of the then OC Boys Company Maj PJ Wakeman was walking her dog around the OC’S Office. A number of Boys were standing around when RSM Kumasi suddenly saw the lady. As usual and in military decorum, he called all us attention, he then turned smartly to the lady, gave hand salute and said, in a loud voice, ‘Good morning madam OC Sir’.All the boys managed to escape from the immediate environment and started singing, “Good morning madam OC Sir” with delirious laughter”.

“I hardly forget the day the Commandant passed some instructions to RSM Kumasi by telephone. A couple of boys who witnessed Kumasi talking to the Commandant could not help laughing because Kumasi came to attention, held the hand-set on the left hand and kept saluting with the right hand while answering intermittently ‘Yes sir’ and saluting at the same- time. The whole scene was as if Kumasi was facing the Commandant face to face”.

Late Maj Gen AN Bamalli
“We Exboys should be proud of him for the role he played in our careers. His honesty, humor and piety were his major strengths. I learned from him that one should never accept failure, or be hindered from achieving an aim once one has made up his mind. And I learned that discipline is the hallmark of all virtues and you need a lot of it to succeed”.

OPERATION GREEN SWEEP: NAF DESTROYS BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS’ CAMP AT BUK IN BORNO STATE

In continuation of OPERATION GREEN SWEEP, the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, on 14 November 2018, destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) Camp at Buk along the Ajigin-Talala-Buk axis near Alagarno Forest. The operation was conducted after ISR missions led to the discovery of a new camp with structures hidden under the thick vegetation, including a suspected BHT Tactical Command and Control (C2) Centre. Accordingly, an Alpha Jet aircraft and two Mi-35 attack helicopters were detailed to attack the camp, inflicting significant damage to the C2 Centre.

The NAF, working in concert with surface forces, will sustain the tempo of operations with a view to destroying all remnants of the terrorists in Borno State.
