LTGEN: I responded to this report earlier on another topic. Below my response. Irrespective of the circumstances that brought this particular incident into public, it's COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT. What more relevant is what actually is this vehicle. It's an armoured personal carrier APC. This from the picture looks like a derivative of the MOWAG Piranha 1. There are quite a number of the now manufactured by different countries in the Western bloc. In particular the one the NA have, seem to be the Canadian variant Grizzly, Husky and cougar. They were retired by the Canadian army about 2 decades ago. First manufactured in 1976. They are not heavily armoured and dont have any FLIR and or target acquisition soft ware. At best they will have the 76mm gun. I doubt if you can get more than 6 troops into them. How we have kept them running is close to a miracle as some iwf them could be up to 30 years old or more. How much can you buy them for today, they will classed as surplus or as close to scrap metal. In reality any friendly country should give them to you for nothing. But if you had to buy them l would get them for about $2-3k per unit at most. They are in reality relics for the museum. My guess is that the Canadian govt.dashed them to is in the 90's. As l don't how anybody who had just a basic not in depth understanding of fit for purpose armoured vehicles would procure them. Would l take one of them into battle against ISWA and feel safe ABSOLUTELY NO. could l send our troops in them to war with a clear conscience, unfortunately a big NO. I will it go into detail about the protection against IED,or the armour against HMG's and or 20mm + fire. What can we do, tell our legislative arms of government who should have over sight function over military procurement to stop being so TOTALLY INEPT. Our brothers, sons, Fathers are being taken out like flies because of a complete lack of fit for purpose precision and up to date weaponry. I can't say anymore before some of our misguided guys that don't like the truth start trolling me as UNPATRIOTIC. 6 Likes 1 Share |

BabaOwen: What is outrageous here? Trucks do break down every time, no? Or do you expect every unit to move with a tow truck? You know for when the military truck do inevitably breaks down. Or do you expect them to leave the truck? 6 Likes |

komekn:Going by this analogy the M113 APC should be in museums too. I have quoted you once telling you "no country nor production year determines obsolescence", the battle does Easy Chairmy General, learn the difference between Motorized and Mech. Infantry. As at now the only issue we've heard from the Mowag is its insulation 4 Likes |

Odunayaw: You can do the research yourself, three answers what if any mine protection does the Grizzly or Piranha 2 have which is one the variants we seem to have Outside of the frontal arc what level of armour protection is available Offensive what precision weaponry is available to this platform that we have Considering your proposition in bold what do you think Boko Dhsk mounted on a pick up wil do to the light armour of the Piranha or a IEDor a RPG7 as you know don't even use cage armour. Then finally what is the offensive response of the Piranha Which countries use the M113 format and as a forward vehicle in hostile territory for carrying troops that will answer the question of fit for purpose. If I say anything else some of you call it giving information to the enemy. 5 Likes |

Odunayaw: I do not. We are talking the specific attributes of the old 1970 tech. of the Piranha 1,2 and Grizzly 6x6 that's the discussion. And if this literally museum piece is fit for purpose. Considering who our current enemy is and what alternatives more effective platforms are available today. So l really do not know what the relevance of Mech Infantry vs Motorised Infantry is to the discourse. Please educate me because I am lost and if thier is any relevance to the specifics of this particular thread of discussion. My backgrounds isn't all football as you may think. I have given some minor insights into that here many many moons ago. I didn't pop up here too look at pictures and dream of military service. I already have a very long history of that albeit British. 3 Likes |

komekn: I suggest you read up on them. Either way, You call the Piranha old tech because of the year it was pressed into service or its role? Whichever it is, it doesn't fly. The Piranha is an APC and not an IFV. There is a basic doctrinal usage of these classes of vehicles that you're not privy to because you prefer "history" lessons An APC basically carries infantry protected from light caliber weapons to the objective wherein the troops debus and commence their business. It is basically a battle taxi You see I couldn't help but be amused when you were all... Offensive what precision weaponry is available to this platform that we haveprobably you're thinking of an IFV The Piranha is used in the same role a M113 APC (1960 tech is used). Oh, and before you start asking "who uses it" you can check out what Turkey uses most Again "no country nor production year determines obsolescence", the battle doesdoes You can tell whatever British thing you're talking of to teenage girls 1 Like |

Algeria- 4th discovery of a rocket in a weapons cache in a month (very unusual) in Tamanrasset, along Mali/Niger borders. MDN calls it a BM-21 Grad (again), looks like a 107mm to me. Additionally- 6 82mm mortar shells, 25 grenades and other ammo . 2 Likes
