Hmmm, Nawa, If what I read everyday on Nairaland is representative of the mindset of the average Nigerian then there's no hope for this country.

It takes two to tango.

Oba Akinolu may not be right on this but the attitude of our Igbo brothers and sisters could frustrate one.

Having helped them more than what their region has done for them, instead of being grateful; their actions seem to be undermining the essence of our existence through their incendiary statements. Calling their hosts cowards- what do you want after that-fight to show we are not cowards.

Oba Akinolu is their match and that is why the situation seems difficult now.

A gentle king could be disobeyed easily but did they say anything at the palace? No. They dare not.

It was after leaving the palace that chest beating, ultimatum , etc started surfacing.

Who then is the cowards? Ta lo fe gbenan woju ekun lai f'eje we ( who wants to put light at the face of a tiger without being bathed with blood)

kolonigga:
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has told the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, to apologise to the Igbo people in Lagos “without delay” over his controversial statement.

During a courtesy visit by Eze Ndigbos (Igbo traditional rulers) of all the local governments in Lagos at the Oba’s Palace on Sunday, Mr. Akiolu had said that Igbo residents in the state should cast their votes for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode, or “perish inside the lagoon.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Falana said the Oba’s diversionary threat is totally unacceptable as it is a mockery of the political objective of national integration.

“It is illegal as it clearly offends Section 42 of the Constitution which has prohibited discrimination on grounds of ethnicity, religion, political opinion, creed or sex,” said Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“Although the Oba lacks the power to cause anyone to ‘die in the Lagoon within seven days,’ the threat constitutes a violation of the fundamental right of thousands of citizens to life.

“In the case of Director-General of State Security Service v Olisa Agbakoba (1999) 3 N.W.L.R (PT 595) 314 it was held by the Supreme Court that ‘It is not in dispute that the Constitution gives every Nigerian citizen the right to move throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof. It also guarantees to the citizen the right not to be expelled from Nigeria nor be refused entry or exit therefrom.’

“Since the residency right of every citizen is constitutionally guaranteed the Igbo people in Lagos should discountenance the threat of Oba Akiolu.”

The monarch came under severe criticism on Monday, as christian groups and opposition politicians lambasted him for his utterance.
Mr. Falana reminded the Oba that Lagos had continued to provide accommodation for Nigerians from all walks of life, a reason he said accounted for the absence of ‘abandoned properties’ in the state after the civil war.

“From time to time, armed militants and other misguided youths who unleash mindless violence on ‘non indigenes’ have always been called to order by the Government and the people of Lagos State,” Mr. Falana said.

“Indeed, the human-rights community has always kicked against discriminatory policies and ensured that all victims of human rights abuse are defended and protected regardless of their ethnic identity.
“As a senior lawyer, Oba Akiolu ought to have realized that the Electoral Act has not conferred powers on any traditional ruler or any other authority to sanction anyone for voting for a candidate of his or her choice in any election conducted in Nigeria.

“After all, before the just concluded presidential election the Oba adduced reasons why he could not endorse the presidential candidate of the APC, General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.). He was not harassed or intimidated for exercising his freedom of choice.

“Since the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended has banned any form of hate campaign the Oba is advised to withdraw the threat credited to him and apologize publicly to the Igbo people without any delay.”

If the Ibos vacate Lagos, the state will instantly become like Ibadan, Ogbomosho, Okokomaiko, Oshobo, Itire, Ado Ekiti and other Yoruba towns with their signature old school design, this is bitter truth.

The hate against the Igbos, (ofcourse, anyone from the SS/SE is considered Igbo), is unconnected to the fact that Igbos parade such modern cities as Enugu, Owerri, Onitsha, Aba, and by their mass limited knowledge of the SS/SE, Uyo, Port-Harcourt, Calabar, Eket, Brass, Benin and Yenogua, yet they consider that after owning these towns, Igbos still come and invade Lagos, buying over the pricest real estates and erecting massive estates and 'enjoying'. I have witnessed a case at Lekki Phase 1, where a Yoruba man refused to sell a plot of Land for a friend for 100 million Naira because he is Igbo but sold to another for just 80 million because he is a fellow Yoruba man. That is how foolish tribalism has made us.

Lest we forget, Lagos, was developed by the Federal Government, and is continually developed by the Investment of Igbos and other investors from other tribes including Yorubas who stop at nothing in real estate development and landscape designs. I do not think we the people generally referred to as Omo Igbo will EVER vacate Lagos due to threats. Our only reaction will be to draw more resources and buy more properties here and bring more of our brothers. We will vote for any candidate of our choice and we will remain a greater infuence in this NO-MAN'S LAND, until such a time the Federal Government will abrogate the State of Origin and State of Birth Dichotomy.

Infact, anyone who has lived in Lagos for 10years should have the right to contest election as Governor of Lagos State, as is done in other Democracies worldwide.

Oba Lil Wayne Akiolu or whatever his foolish name is, needs Education more than my President-elect.

Your bias is stinking to high heavens. What violence are you talking about? Was there a conflict to be resolved? I don't get your logic. Don't people have a right to openly support a candidate of their choice? Is the said candidate not a full blodded Yoruba Lagos son of the soil? IGBOS WANT TO VOTE FOR A YORUBA MAN AND IT'S CAUSING TROUBLE FOR THEM. I tire for this Nigeria.

How can i explain this?

Its not about candidature but a party thing.

APC is predominantly a lagos thing, strated right her in lAgos so its only natural for visitors to support such party.

Imagine yorubas living in the east openly showing support of APC and not APGA.

Anyone has the right to vote for anybody but the dogmatic and unreasonable approach of igbos in Lagos is frustrating, intimidating, nauseating and a slap on our face. Igbos should think deep

Your argument does not make sense. How did you help the Ibos. You did not put them on welfare or fed them. They came to Lagos and worked hard, and got rewarded for their had work and now you are jealous of their success. You and your so called oba should bury you heads in shame and in the sand that the Ibos travelled that far to succeed where you failed.

I don't think it is allowed for a King to apologise for his mistakes. That is why they must be very careful about what they do, I can't remember people like Queen Elizabeth apologizing for anything. I might be wrong though!

An eye for an eye,a tooth for tooth....We have yoruba lives at stake in the east too,so everyone needs to calm down and let the igbos cast their votes without fear or intimidation as it is written in the Nigerian Constitution.

What will the apology do or cure? The deed has been done and the damage has already been done, and the fact that he let it drag on for this long would render the apology [almost] useless and meaningless when it is eventually tendered (that is if he would even apologise).
Meanwhile, let's forget all these and move on from here. The Igbos have already decided!! #swimming things activated#, #oya let's go there.

The lgbo leaders accorded the Oba his due respect in the confines of his palace, by not speaking out of turn, and you call them cowards??

lf they had disrespected him you will still accuse lgbos of lacking respect for a hallowed throne of the Yoruba,as well as having no regard for their host.

What baffles me is the the attitude of the Igbos. For heaven's sake when would you sit down and reason on your own without allowing what others say influence your reasoning. Some Igbos that had the intention of voting for Ambode have decided to change their minds because of what the Oba said. That's foolishness. So if the Oba comes again in four years time and says any Igbo man that doesn't vote KOWA would die in the lagoon, all of you would then decide to vote KOWA just to spite the Oba? I wonder how some people reason. It's this same mentality that makes it easy for 'religious leaders' to toss some poeple to and fro when they cannot sit down on their own and reason.

The Oba has said what he liked, na him get him mouth. Even if he doesn't apologise, that's his business. Everyone has condemned the statement, it's time to move on. Igbos really have a lot to learn from the Yorubas.
