Lagos is what it is today, not because of just the Yorubas, but because of the rest of Nigeria.

If it were just the Yorubas, Lagos won't look any different from Ibadan, Ibadan is a perfect reflection of what Yorubas are capable of doing alone, it was the seat of Awo's Western region, and before then, it was the Capital of the Oyo nation.

The most imporrant things that made Lagos a modern city were provided by the Nigerian factor.

Lagos has been massively invested on, by first, the Colonials, who used resources gotten from Lagos colony and the rest of the country, then the FG that did the same, and continues doing same till today.

It hosts the main international airport in Nigeria.
It hosts the main sea port of the country.
It benefits massively from the population of the rest of the country, such that many foreign firms and investors that got attracted to the country because of the population of the country, base there and from there reach the rest of the country.

Lagos became what it is today basically because of Nigeria, and won't remain the same when Nigeria ceases to exist.

You keep making reference to what cities look like. Does Atlanta 'look' like New York or does Los Angeles 'look' like Austin. Each city is allowed to have its own character. Without a doubt, immigrants have contributed to the growth of Lagos but to suggest that Lagos is 'successful' because of immigrants is mischievous. You folk, lazily refer to Lagos State as the former Capital but Lagos State was never the Capital.

What was provided in Lagos that wasn't provided in other states? Lagos had a major seaport before the Brits arrived.

Lagos provides an environment that enable people to get on in life. How many immigrants in Lagos arrived Lagos and were able to lease properties immediately let alone owning their own homes? There are many Nigerians who cant even visit their home states without fearing being kidnapped or bombed.

Lagos will survive without immigrants.

You said the Portuguese owned Lagos. I have been asking you for the details.

When did the Portuguese own Lagos? Who were the administrators?

These are simple questions and yet you are bobbing and weaving as if I asked you to set your ar.se. grin grin grin grin
damn if yu know the administrator why not tell us..
But yu cannot deny that the portuguese were once in lagos and gave it a name that we use till date..

The OP stated that the Portuguese 'owned' Lagos. Hence my question to him to provide
1. The dates when the Portuguese owned Lagos
2. The Portuguese administrators of Lagos. We know the names of the British administrators such as Freeman, Maloney, Glover. Why can't the dude provide the names of the Portuguese administrators?

Was Lagos better than other coastal West African cities like Accra,Abidjan, Bissau, Etc before the creation of Nigeria?

Is Lagos the only coastal part of Yorubaland? Why are the rest of the coastal Yorubaland not like Lagos.

Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, etc, they don't look alike, but they all have features of modern city, and similar planning, such that if anything should happen to their civilization, any body studying the ruins of those cities can't miss the similarities, which will indicate they were all built by same people, the Caucasians!

Lagos have no other similar city like it in the whole of Yorubaland! And you want to convince me that it was built by the same people that built Oshogbo and Ibadan? Awo couldn't turn his Ibadan capital to a modern city, but he somehow miraculously turned Lagos to a modern city, you need to try harder.

Lagos is what it is today, because of the immigrants, both the Yoruba immigrants and the non Yoruba ones.

With the elections at an end the word on everyone tongue today is Igbo. From uncertainty about the 'fate' of an oppositional Igbo people in a Nigeria ruled by APC. I'm confident that there's nothing to 'fear' about APC being in power because I believe they will follow the example created by GEJ of politics without bitterness. Moreover, no group in Nigeria has gained more politically in the past 5 years than the Igbo people. I say this because though few of us are keen to this habit, I like to keep myself familiar with the past to contrast it with the present. In the recent past were were fragmented, disunited and voiceless at the center. Today I present the gains we have made in the past few years that has made the Igbo people today's political epicenter.

Rekindled Alliances: Our ability to stay focused on the original adversary to our progress not just as a tribe, but as a region, allowed the
South South which is typically inconsistent to inessence 'see the light'. It also allowed may Igbos to let bygones be bygones the business environment in Nigeria improved under GEJ. Igbos related to the witch hunting, envy and sabotage against GEJ and rallied to support him. At the same time the South South saw this gesture and past transgression from both regions were left as water under the bridge. With an increase of awareness in the south south and an increase in forgiveness in the south east, the Eastern alliance is back. An honorable mention goes to the eastern middle belt which is also firmly pro-PDP as wel.

PDP: Without a doubt Igbos now have a major party that represents and protects their interests. In the past Igbos were a marginal part of all parties in Nigeria except their own APGA. With APGA and PDP allying and Igbos staying loyal to the new PDP built be GEJ, PDP has come of age. Most importantly the exodus of tribalist elements from the SW and North have left the incredibly powerful wide spread machinery of the PDP in Igbo hands as the part reforms to be more technocrat based and the home of fair ethical politics. Today Igbos have a steer and undeniable leadership and equity in Labour, PDP, APGA, and increasingly the APC.

Lagos seats: It is clear that the presence of Igbos in Lagos has reached a level of discomfort for Yorubas (primarily non indigenous yorubas) that even a royal monarch feels the threat of consolidated Igbo domination. While Igbos didn't come to Lagos to dominate, Their successes and presence has been rewarded by the election of multiple Igbo men and women into the Lagos assembly, making Igbos to only ethnic group to win elections outside of their ethnic region. Today the elections of Yoruba Jimi Agbaje and Yoruba Ambode is left with Igbos being the primary focus of discussion but a fearful APC and the lagos populace as a whole because the force of our will has been shown in our electoral victories.

Unity: For the first time in years Igbos are one. We speak with one voice. We went to the polls for one man. the Igbos in the PDP are allies with those in APGA, those in APGA are allies with those in PDP. Delta Igbo and South East Igbo are by the day not see as two separate things. Our vision and focus is now clear and more united than that of any group as Igbos are now seen as the bedrock of power for the east region, the PDP, and the Nigerian economy.

Political Maturity: As a mark of pride, the SE was the only violence free region during the entire 2015 campaign era. Under GEJ our gubernatorial elections have been conducted effortlessly. People are happy with results and because the voice of the people is now king the 'vassals' installed on us by former military rulers are all gone. Today all Igbo leaders are their own man, like them or not, as opposed to the 'boys' of military men.

Of course, Lagos will survive Nigerian break up, but it will never remain same again.

It will lose the monopoly of sea port it currently enjoys, with the resultant chain reactions that will set in with it.

Each new emerging countries will seek to have their own sea port, Lagos will lose part of it's IGR.

There will equally be a population shift, with Lagos real estate business going down the drain as non indigenes move to their new countries.

bro,is that statement not contradicting?if no..

Lagos or any other states in nigeria cannot survives or be successful on its own without other immigrant cos it s even immigrants that
makes a place or city more successful.

Without foreigners like ndiigbos, hausas and ijaws or few white men called immigrant, how do yu think lagos will be successful without exchanging lucrative ideas, development ideas and technological ideas from these immigrant?
Absence of foreign investor will slow the success of lagos..

Except I don't understand or know what yu mean
by being successful and the latter growth.

No man is an island in this world,yu need to mingle and tangle before yu become successful.

No it is not contradictory. Let me explain.

Suppose the GDP of Lagos without immigrants is $100 but with immigrants, the GDP is $130. So the growth attributable to immigrants is $30; so do we say because of $30, Lagos wouldn't be successful?

The thing about migration is that economic migrants move to economically viable places. And there was migration to Lagos from the Yoruba areas even before the Brits arrived. Mind you, there were no states back.

There are many chinese and indian inventors in the US but little to none American inventors in China & India. Most of these Chinese & Indian inventors are successful because the US environment was to their advantage but they don't have these advantages in China & India. Do we say China & India are contributing to the US economy? Why are there more successful Chinese & Indian inventors in the US than in China & India?

Also, there are two kinds of immigrants
1. Those who are looking for jobs
2. Those with cash and looking to invest (Think Russians in London)

Many migrants to Lagos are in group 1. So why do these group of migrants always overstate their importance to the Lagos economy? Even Russians who have a lot of liquid assets in London don't think the London economy would collapse without them.

Sometimes, when we indulge the comments from this folk, its not because we have nothing to do or we don't know better. We do so simply to educate those who don't know but have the ability to process data in a logical manner.
