TRANSPARENCY INT’L RATES PRESIDENT JONATHAN GOVT AS BEST, SAYS BUHARI, OBASANJO GOVTS WORSE

Posted by: admin May 13, 2015 in News

According to Transparency International’s data from 1979 till date, the tenures of both General Muhammadu Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo were more corrupt than the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The data also showed that under the administration of President Jonathan, Nigeria has recorded its best score in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) since 1979. This is in complete contrast to the sordid picture of rampant corruption being painted by the opposition, ardent critics of the Jonathan administration and much of the media in the last few years – especially in the build up to the general elections.

But the point that the figures from Transparency International make so clearly is that, in comparative terms, Nigeria is actually much less corrupt today, and perceived globally to be much less corrupt today, than it has been in the last 35 years – including under the regimes of General Buhari and President Obasanjo, both of who wear the toga and chant the mantra of anti-corruption. Shockingly, according to the TI data, President Obasanjo’s first tenure had the worst scale of corruption during the 35 years period between 1979 and 2015.

The TI Corruption Perception Index is a rating of countries from 1 to 100 showing their corruption scale. A rating of 1 is the worst and rating of 100 means a country is completely free of corruption. The pass mark is 50 and any country scoring below 50 is considered a corrupt country.

In the year 2000, Nigeria was ranked the most corrupt country in the world – and improved marginally in 2001 and 2003 when it was rated the second most corrupt nation in the world in the TI’s Corruption Perception Index. This was certainly not under the watch of President Jonathan.

Since 2012, Nigeria has made steady improvements in the CPI. Indeed, under President Jonathan, for the first time in decades, Nigeria is not in the list of 1-10 most corrupt countries in the world.

In the 2014 Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, issued in December, Nigeria was ranked 136 out of 175 countries surveyed in the report. This ranking placed Nigeria, alongside five other countries, as the 39th most corrupt country in the world. This is Nigeria’s best ranking in the last four years.

With this ranking, Nigeria leapfrogged eight countries within a space of one year – from the 31st most corrupt nation in 2013 to the 39th in 2014. This may be regarded by cynics as a small achievement: but it represents a big step in the right direction.

Indeed, the administration of President Jonathan deserves some commendation for the positive steps it has taken, and the modest achievements it has made so far, in the war against corruption – rather than the vengeful knocks it is receiving from various quarters.

Looking for the ''sauce''? Google is not your enemy.

The important thing is, is the content true or false?

The truth is coming out gradually. Jonathan's only crime was belonging to a minority ethnic group. The North hinged on that and used its population to vote him out. It's ironic that the oil money which is the North's major attraction to Governance is from the said Jonathan's minority group.

I think we've got a big problem here; though probing the past is highly necessary as we need to know where we are coming from, my question is, just like the elections where guys were campaigning with '85, are we moving forward or what?

This is not a competition - OBJ has served his terms, GMB is about to do same, GEJ is rounding his up; we need to put GMB's government 'on fire' based on our current problems and promises he made. This template of FINDING NEMO A HERO out of these individuals is a waste of time. It is time for GMB to start work!

By the way, this CPI started in 1995 so except maybe the GMB tenure you are comparing with is a 't+10', the basis of this Afrique Report is faulty!

By the way, always include your sauce (sic) as one needs to discuss with facts. The OP brought up a report from: http://reportsafrique.com/2015/05/transparency-intl-rates-president-jonathan-govt-as-best-says-buhari-obasanjo-govts-worse/

The basis of their report can all be found from: http://www.transparency.org/research/cpi/overview

You guys find it so easy to twist facts.

Corruption perception index for Nigeria was best around 2008 when OBJ handed over to Yar'Adua.

It plummeted under the regime of GEJ to an all time low. This has been discussed and confirmed in more than two different threads.

@OP, the onus is on you to prove this beyond doubt...you can start by making screenshots from Transparency international to make a case.

Complete utter nonsense. This has no bases even with a source to provide for it. OBJ provided cheap call rates for Nigerians who wanted to call family of friends abroad, he really developed our internet and mobile infrastructure which puts us ahead than any other country in west Africa, though he was corrupt but never failed to tell the truth.

Buhari's regime was the least corrupt and no-one can testify against that, that's of course if they're mentally deluded.

But what jonathan caused is unforgivable, thousands have died due to his incompetence, millions of Nigerians (aprox 5-7 million) left homeless and living in refugee camps, that's more than the whole population of Libya, he allowed 20 billion dollars or even more to go missing, he spent 3 trillion naira on elections alone.

Thread should be deleted before it causes some people's blood pressure to boil. undecided sad

Correction the north did not use its population, the north rigged the elections and chased away voters who remotetly looked like they might vote for Jonathan. All this after they had denied most southerners based in the north the chance to collect their voters card.

the earlier you TANoids accept that Jonathan was clueless and corrupt, the reason why he was voted out,the better for you.

Your ethnic and religious sentiments as to why he lost is stale.

Rubbish! Did Jonathan belong to a major ethnic group when he won the 2011 election?

The truth is like a bright light. No matter how long it is covered, once it is opened, everyone will see it.
Meaning the truth can only be hidden / covered temporarily.
