Ighalo Makes Watford History, Ujah Scores, Iheanacho Makes First EPL Start

By Johnny Edward:
Odion Ighalo made Watford history on Saturday when he scored a brace against West Ham in a Premier League clash at Vicarage Road.

With his second brace of the season, the Super Eagles striker became the highest scorer in Watford’s Premier League history with seven goals, overtaking Heidar Helguson and Hameur Bouazza, both on six goals.

Ighalo, who scored one goal in each half, has now scored seven of Watford’s 10 league goals and assisted two.

Victor Moses started the match for West Ham.
Manchester City’s Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho was handed his first English Premier League start at home to Norwich at the Ethiad Stadium.

Iheanacho was replaced by Raheem Sterling in the 54th minute of his side’s 2-1 win against the Canaries.

Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi started for Chelsea as they slumped to their sixth defeat of the season, a 3-1 loss at home to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

A sublime brace from Philipe Coutinho and a clinical finish from Christian Benteke secured Jurgen Klopp his first win as Liverpool boss.
It was Mikel’ fourth start this season for the Blues.

Stoke forward Osaze Odemwingie was left out of the Stoke City squad that drew goalless against Newcastle United at St James Park.

In the English Championship, Carl Ikeme, watched from the bench as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Birmingham 2-0. It was his sixth straight bench role.

In Germany, Anthony Ujah scored a consolatory goal for Werder Bremen, his sixth in the league, as they lost 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

At the WWK Arena, Leon Balogun played for an hour in FSV Mainz’ 3-3 draw against Augsburg.
It was his sixth start for Mainz this season.

In Scotland, ‎Efe Ambrose replaced Jozo Simunovic in the 78th minute of Celtic’s 3-0 home win against Aberdeen.

Ambrose who has been called up for the Eagles 2018 World Cup qualifier against Djibouti next month has made eight appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Emenike, Why Retire Now?

EMENIKE, WHY RETIRE NOW?

Retirement affects every human being in every walk of life and it is what we usually look towards either with dread or relish. Dread, if age is setting in but the future remains bleak or uncertain with no adequate financial plan to fall back on; and relish if the individual has ‘achieved’ his/her set goals during his active years and is certain of financial independence at retirement.

Some retire early while some retire so late in life. Some are forced into retirement for one reason or the other. In essence, retirement can be a fulfilling experience or a nightmare as the case might be.

It therefore came as a surprise to many Nigerian football fans when Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike took to Instagram to announce his retirement from the national team on Tuesday. At 28-years of age, I believe the Al Ain of UAE striker still has more years to play active football for club and country barring any career threatening injury.

So what must have induced what I will term Emenike’s forced retirement?

Media reports suggest partly that the player got wind of plans to axe from the Eagles on account of his recent goals drought which has extended to 2 years in the national team and that coach Sunday Oliseh is not too pleased that the power-playing forward is not playing topflight football in Europe.

Oliseh himself did expressed shock and suprise at Emenike’s decision and has denied rumoured plans to drop the player from his team adding that the player indeed remain in his plans. It remains to be seen if the player will be persuaded to rescind his decision.

I suspect Emmenike is simply taking a cue from the Vincent Enyeama episode by trying to bow out of the team with his head held high rather than be ridiculed and dropped from the team on account of poor form.

If Oliseh can dethrone a ‘performing’ Enyeama as Eagles captain despite the Lille of France goalkeeper being the first choice for club and country, how can Emenike feel safe knowing he hasn’t scored a goal for the Eagles in 2 years and is currently playing in an obscure league in the United Arab Emirates?

Having started his international career in 2011 scoring 16 goals in 35 games, is Emenike right to call it quits with international football at this stage of his career? Over to you, dear readers.

ADIEU, SIR ODUAMADI
Super Eagles forward, Nnamdi Oduamadi committed the remains of his father, late Sir Vincent Oduamadi to mother earth recently and I am using this medium to commiserate with the AC Milan player.

Sir Oduamadi died on September 30 and has been buried in Umunkwo Eziumuenyi Village in Isiala Mbano, Imo State. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.

Take heart, ‘Robinho’. May God grant you and the entire Oduamadi family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Adieu Sir Oduamadi, rest in the bossom of the Lord.

Oliseh: Rebuilding Eagles without plan

BY GEORGE ALUO

FOR Nigeria, the race to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup will begin later this month when the Super Eagles storm the Swazi city of Lobamba to face soccer minnows, Swaziland in the first round of the qualification series.

Relatively new Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh last week released the list of players he intends to use to prosecute the game which ordinarily should be a walk over for Nigeria.

The Swaziland national team, the King’s Shield (Shilangu) is rated 135 in the current FIFA ranking and it is on record that the side has not made any impact in the round leather game at the international level. The only thing going for the team as it prepares to face Nigeria is the fact that she made a mincemeat of her fellow minnow, Djibouti 8-1 in the prelims before being drawn to face the Eagles in round one.

Although the immediate task ahead for the Eagles is on paper an easy one, the coach, Oliseh can not afford to take any chances as doing so could turn out to be a costly mistake. Football is one game in which anything, just anything can happen if a team goes into a match ill prepared or decides to underrate her opponent.

History of the game is replete with occasions where obscure teams sprang the mother of all surprises. One that readily comes to mind and interestingly at the biggest stage was the 2-1 defeat debutants Algeria handed almighty Germany at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

So one can understand why Oliseh must go to Lobamba with the nation,s best legs. Beyond that match, for the Eagles gaffer, the encounter is another opportunity to continue the team’s re building process which he started since taking over from Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.

And it is that rebuilding process that some of us as stakeholders are interesting in.The question to ask is this: Is Oliseh rebuilding with solid materials and with a well drawn out plan or is he rebuilding on a shaky ground?

Given the way the coach has gone about the job right from his very first game against Tanzania, one would without mincing words say he (Oliseh) is rebuilding without any plan. The coach has remained inconsistent. He would say one thing which people will applaud only to do the opposite when it comes to execution.

First, before the game against Tanzania, Oliseh said he would be calling up only players that are playing for top European clubs and that bench warmers should forget about the Eagles. When he released his list of invited players for the match, what we saw was players plying their trade in the Russian league, while the likes of Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and Mikel Obi were left out.

He went to Tanzania, saw and failed to conquer. In fact, Oliseh was saved the humiliation of outright defeat in his first outing by the heroics of goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme whose brilliant saves denied Tanzania victory.

After that shambolic performance against Tanzania, Oliseh faced another litmus test in the international friendlies against Congo and Cameroon in Belgium.

The coach did not come out of it without exposing his inexperience. His bust up with Vincent Enyeama over the Eagles captaincy has since led to the Eagles keeper quitting the national team. Agreed, Oliseh has the right to name a new skipper moving forward, but he went about it the wrong way. Again, the same Oliseh who said he decided to strip Enyeama of the captain’s band since he is on the verge of retirement has recalled a player, Obafemi Martins, who “retired” from the Eagles three years back. His argument being that Martins is scoring goals in the American League (M LS)- a league that is meant for players who could pass for “pensioners.” The question to ask is this: How come the same coach who wants a captain that will remain in the team for a long time in Ahmed Musa now be going for a striker, Martins, who soccer wise has reached menopause?

What else could pass for inconsistency? Is Martins also among the players Oliseh plans to rebuild with or is he merely pressing the panic button?

Questions begging for answers, no doubt.
On the young players in the team, one finds it irreconcilable a situation where Oliseh thinks Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi deserves a place in the Eagles while Kelechi Iheanacho should wait for his time.

Oliseh: Rebuilding Eagles without plan

While one is not against Iwobi’s invitation, but it sounds absurd for a player who is in Arsenal’s junior team to have a place in a team in which a Manchester City senior player is being told to wait for his time. Haba Oliseh!

It would be noted that Oliseh did not initially include Iheanacho’s name on his 23- man list for the Swazi game. Iheanacho’s call up was only an after thought and one won’t be surprised if he plays no role when the chips are down in Lobamba.

Moving forward, one would advise that Oliseh sticks to whatever criteria he has spelt out for the invitation of players. He should go for the nation,s best legs as that is what he needs to shame critics who in the first place believe he is not “ripe” for the Eagles coaching job. Inviting players based on“paddy paddy arrangement”won’t help him.

Some of us are not unmindful of the fact that four of the “journeymen from Russia” he (Oliseh) called up against Tanzania are players whose soccer careers can be traced to the amateur club of his sibling, Churchill Oliseh.

Oliseh must realize that there is no grammar he and the NFF would speak to convince Nigerians on why the Eagles must not land in Gabon for AFCON 2017.

Given the nation’s soccer pedigree, qualifying for the Nation’s Cup and even the World Cup should be our birth right. The same way nobody can talk about afrobasket (basketball) without Angola or African athletics championship without Kenya.

Oshaniwa was half fit but featured for Hearts in big road win

Nigeria international Juwon Oshaniwa has said it was worth the risk to return to action even when not fully fit and help Hearts win 4-0 at Partick Thirstle.

Oshaniwa is nursing a hamstring injury and was not expected to be back in action this weekend against Partick Thirstle, but he was thrown into the fray to secure a big road win for his club.

Hearts are now second behind Celtic with 26 points from 13 games, a point ahead of third-placed Aberdeen.

Oshaniwa revealed he was not fully fit for the game but considering the importance of Saturday’s game to his team's league standing, he decided to take the risk and play the game.

"I wasn't fully fit to play the game, but knowing how important the game is to the team's ambition to climb up the table made me to play and I wasn't disappointed with the team's performance. It was a massive victory, to God be the glory,” he said.

"But for sure I need to stay out for some time, I will wait for the medics advise after taking like two days’ rest."

Ideye scores again for high-flying Olympiacos in Greece

Olympiacos won their ninth straight league game Saturday with Nigeria striker Brown Ideye again on target for the Greek champions.

Olympiakos won 2-0 at Veria and remain top of the league table with a perfect 27 points after nine games.

Ideye, who joined the Greek top flight team this summer from West Brom, opened the scoring in the 55th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The 27-year-old striker has now scored three goals in seven league games for Olympiacos.

He was grateful to God for making him contribute to winning a tough game on the road.

"Thanks to God for another win tonight, really difficult game for us #greatteamwork," he tweeted.

He was instrumental to Nigeria winning AFCON 2013 and won the Ukraine cup and Ukraine Super cup in 2013/2014 and 2011/2012 respectively with Dynamo Kiev.

Ighalo: Watford Game Plan Worked Perfectly Against West Ham

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo says he is happy to score the Watford’s’s two goals against West Ham in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League game.

Speaking after the game, the Super Eagles striker who has been invited by coach Sunday Oliseh for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Swaziland, praised West Ham for giving Watford a tough game.

“We know they are a very good team but we stuck to our game-plan and what the gaffer told us to do, and it really worked,” he told the Watford Weekend Post.

“He told us to try and keep [Dimitri] Payet as much away from the goal as possible, because if he’s very close he’s very dangerous, so we were always pushing and letting him come back to get the ball.

“I think that really worked, we really pushed ourselves and we took the chances that came, so we are very happy about the game.

“I’m happy about my goals, but I’m most pleased about the team performance. We played very well today and we deserved the win and the three points.”

The win was Watford’s second in a row and they are ninth in the Premier League table after 11 games.

Ighalo believes the team spirit that exists within the first-team squad has been crucial to their success so far.

“We’ve been performing great this season, not just today, and we’ve been working hard together,” he said.

“The team have been pushing, we run for each other, we fight for each other, and it’s been great.

“I’m happy for the spirit today, we won last week and that gave us a boost to push on.

“We were playing at home and I think our game-plan really worked today, so we are very happy.”

Oliseh: Martins Must Fight For Super Eagles Striker Slot

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has exclusively told Comple tesportsnigeria.com that Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins must earn his place in the starting line-up after his recall to the national team.

The red-hot Martins who has scored 15 goals this season in the American Major League Soccer was handed a shock call-up to Eagles following Emmanuel Emenike’s retirement from the team.

And with Watford striker Odion Ighalo in a rich vein of form for his club, Oliseh insists the 31-year-old has healthy competition as to who will lead the attack.

“Martins will offer us some other qualities in attack but first he must earn his place in the team,” Oliseh briefly told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Oliseh then spoke about the home-based Eagles, assuring that theh will be better when they resume camping for next year’s African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

He said: “I was so impressed with the team’s play in the first leg and though I was not with the team in the second leg I was told they did brilliantly considering the hostility.”

Oliseh is expected to arrive in camp next weekend in preparation for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Swaziland. ‎

Mikel: Chelsea Players 100% Behind Mourinho, He’s The Only One

Nigeria midfielder Mikel Obi has claimed that he and other Chelsea stars are in support of their under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach has endured a poor start to the defence of Chelsea’s Premier League title, with the Blues currently 15th, with 11 points from 11 games, after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool.

There have been questions about some players’ commitment, and the presenter of BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Sportsweek” programme reported at the weekend that he had been told that one first-team Chelsea player had recently said: “I’d rather lose than win for him.”

But Mikel, who started both the Capital One Cup loss to Stoke and the Liverpool defeat, said the players retain full support for the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss.
“We are right behind the manager,” Mikel told reporters.

“There’s no doubt about it. In training we work very hard. If anyone can turn this around, we definitely think he’s the one.
“Last year we were champions.

We won two trophies. Jose knows this club more than any other manager. He’s the most successful manager in the club’s history.

“I definitely think that, if anything is wrong, if anything can be fixed, he is the one. There’s no one out there that is going to come in and fix what’s going on.

“If you tell the team that we are not giving 100 percent then there is the doubt, but we are giving 100 percent, we are playing for the manager, we are right behind him.

“He has come out a few times and said the players are not giving 100 percent and then you look at the next few games, the players come out and play better. He is doing everything that needs to be done.

“It’s just that right now things aren’t going well, so everyone [outside] wants him to go. I don’t think it’s the right way to go. I think that inside that dressing room we definitely believe he is the man to change things. He knows this club in and out.

“He knows what’s wrong and it’s just a matter of time before results start coming. We are playing well, we are working very hard in training. It’s just the results aren’t coming.”

Watford Coach Hails ‘Important Player’ Ighalo For Staying

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has heaped plaudits on Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo whom he describes as “a wonderful man”.

Ighalo scored Watford’s goals in the 2-0 win at home against Victor Moses’ West Ham United on Saturday to become the Hornets’ Premier League top scorer in history with seven goals.

The Nigerian scored 20 goals in 38 appearances in the Championship last season and turned down the chance of a big-money move abroad to sign a new five-year contract with Watford.

Flores said the decision of the former Udinese and Granada striker to stay at the club despite interest in him was the best.

“Ighalo took a very important decision to stay at Watford. It was a brilliant idea,” Flores told Sky Sports.

“He is a wonderful man who stayed here because his future here at Watford is really big. He is already an important player for us,” the Spaniard said.

Ighalo is invited to the Super Eagles’ 2018 World Cup qualifying games against Swaziland on November 13 and 17.

Obiora Ends Four-Year‎ Drought, Scores First Academica Goal

BY Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles midfielder Obiora Nwankwo was the hero of his side when he scored the winner in Academica's 1-0 win over Moreirense in an ill-tempered Portuguese top flight game that saw eight yellow cards issued on Sunday.

The goal‎ ended a four-year goal drought for the Nigerian and it was his first goal for the club in 35 league games since he joined last year‎.

Obiora last scored ‎a league in the colours of Gubbio in the 2011/12 season in Serie B. He scored in the 15th minute of the encounter on Sunday to hand his side their second win of the season as they climbed out of the relegation zone.
Obiora has played all eight games for Academica this season.

The former Inter Milan and FC Cluj of Romania star has 13 international caps for the Super Eagles but was left out of the squad to face Swaziland in a fortnight.

Ighalo in race for EPL award

Ighalo has been outstanding for Watford in October

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo will battle Yaya Toure of Manchester City and Sadio Mane from Southampton for the English Premier League African Player Award for October.

Ighalo’s goals have seen his promoted Watford hold their own in the English top flight.

Previous Nigeria winners of this award have included Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi.

Awards director Tunde Adelakun noted the unrelenting performance of previous winners, which showed that their award recognition was no fluke.

"Riyad Mahrez has been a revelation in this league and he keeps getting better and better,” Adelakun said.

“We have also seen great showings by our August winner Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan who seems to be settling down now, albeit in challenging circumstances in his club."

Fans, African football followers and journalists are expected to cast their votes for their choice of the eventual winner, which will be announced very soon.

Obafemi Martins in dramatic MLS playoffs win

Martins has already won a trophy with Seattle Sounders this season

Obafemi Martins’ Seattle Sounders pulled off a dramatic 2-1 win over FC Dallas in their Western Conference MLS Cup playoffs semi-final first leg at CenturyLink Field on Sunday night.

Seattle Sounders need at least a draw in the second leg to reach the final while a 1-0 win will be enough for FC Dallas to make it to the final.

Musa and Doumbia’s chance to star at Old Trafford

Ahmed Musa in action for CSKA Moscow
by Graeme Jackson

CSKA Moscow’s African attacking pair of Seydou Doumbia and Ahmed Musa will have another chance to test Manchester United’s defence when the teams meet at Old Trafford on Tuesday in matchday four of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The teams played out a 1-1 draw in their first meeting last month, and United have recorded three successive goalless stalemates since. With Louis van Gaal now under pressure to see his side produce more of an attacking threat, CSKA’s speed on the counter could see Musa and Doumbia profit at the Theatre of Dreams.

The pick of Tuesday’s eight matches sees Real Madrid host Serge Aurier’s Paris Saint-Germain in Group A.

The teams played out a goalless draw in their meeting in France a fortnight ago, but the stakes will be higher for this return game – a win for either side would see them progress into the knockout round should Enoch Kofi Adu’s Malmo fail to win at Shakhtar Donetsk.

In Group C, Foxi Kéthévoama and Junior Kabananga’s Astana will host Atletico Madrid, while Aurélien Chedjou’s Galatasaray travel to Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez’s Benfica. Asanta need a win if they are to bring themselves back into contention to progress from the group.

Group D’s African focus falls on the Manchester City trio of Yaya Toure, Wilfried Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho as they travel to face Sevilla. City secured a last-gasp 2-1 win over Spaniards in the previous matchday and a repeat result will see them put one foot in the knockout stage.

UEFA Champions League fixtures, Tuesday 3 November

Mikel Blames Ref Clattenburg For Chelsea Defeat To Liverpool

Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has lashed out at the referee for Chelsea's 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

Mikel played 70 minutes and was given a yellow card, but feels the Blues were not fairly treated by referee Mark Clattenburg.

"We knew it was going to be a difficult game but we started well and it was a good performance," he told Chelsea's official website on Monday.

"We got the goal and if we went into the break 1-0 up it would have been much easier but the referee played two minutes and 30 seconds [stoppage time] and if we'd played the exact minutes we would have gone in at 1-0.

"Then the referee gave me a yellow card for my first foul and just after that Lucas committed a foul – for me and for everyone else it should have been a [second] yellow card."

Chelsea are currently 15th in the Premier League table, with 11 points from 11 matches.

Seattle Sounders came back from a goal down with Anfreas Ivanschitz scoring Seattle’s equaliser in the 67th minute with a solo effort and Clint Dempsey 86th minute stunning free kick was the match winner.

Mikel should keep himself out of this Mourinho vs referee battle. He should remember Diego Costa stamped Skrtel with his foot and the referee left Costa. That is enough for Clattenburg to be absolved of blame because Costa committed a worse offence before Lucas own.

As for the timing of the whistle, thirty seconds is not too much. Some referees can stay up to two minutes.

Next time, Chelsea players should play to the Whistle.

Heartland striker Bright Ejike scores after going 10 match days without doing so

Heartland now have 53 points from 36 games, while Giwa have 60 points from same number of matches.

Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme
by Samm Audu

Super Eagles coach Alloy Agu has dismissed fears over the inactivity of goalkeeper Carl Ikeme at his English Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ikeme has been installed as Nigeria No 1 following the retirement of Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama from international football, but he last featured for his club Wolves on August 29 at home against Charlton Athletic.

The Wolves goalkeeper has played only three games this season compared to featuring in 33 games the previous campaign.

Nigeria will again be relying on the 29-year shot stopper for a 2018 World Cup eliminator against Swaziland and Agu has dispelled fears his lack of minutes at Wolves could affect him with the Super Eagles.

“It is not a major concern that he is not playing for his club as long as he continues to do well with us,” maintained the former Eagles skipper.

“I believe his coach at Wolves will have a second look at him based on what he does with us.

“He could also have a chance to move elsewhere for his club football.”
