What's the source of these pics pls. I do not agree that those are the wives of king Jaja. If you compare the two pics, you will see a great difference. The picture qualities shows they were not taking in the same age nor the same settings. Besides, check out Jaja's dressing and compare it to the women. The OP should direct us to the source of his pictures.

The definations and degrees of civilization vary according to perception, cultural values and environment. What we call western civilization and admire are just ways of life in their clime and it should not be adopted as parameters to conclude that Africans are backward. No no no..!it's not true. That is one fallacy Africans should reject outrightly.
The pictures here are just too perfect becuase they represent the natural way of life of these people back then, when practically the way of life was very close to nature, when farming was 100% organic and there were no chemical in foods which causes cancer and other diseases that are prevalent today.
Further more,Anthropologist and other reseachers in the fields of humanity have even come to conclusion that people of this time has higher quality of life than we the so called civilized people..Hence, these pictures are just too perfect and should be celebrated because they are reflection of our heritage, culture and civilazion as people who are very very very close to nature.
Therefore,King Jaja of Opobo and his wives in these pictures are symbol of our civilization. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this picture.

Sorry o,all these things are still prevalent in Western countries. Before Trans Atlantic slave trade,Blacks were selling White people. When you are talking about Semi-primitiveness,just mention yourself.
Blacks selling White people? do you have any evidence to back up your claim. Plus I don't think anyone who sells his fellow human into slavery can boast of moral superiority.

Blacks were selling each other into slavery and you call that civilization? what about the inter-tribal wars that were raging on? Whether you accept that fact or not we were a semi-primitive people. And who says there is no morality in the modern day? ever heard of ethics as a branch of philosophy? Or is it the Patriarchal practices and misogynistic tendencies?

Mr. Man, I guess you didnt even know that blacks were not the only people selling themselves out, Europeans did, the Arabs also did. By the way, you claim we were primitive but what's your proof. Its probably gotten from reading one sided subjective history books written by bourgeiose Europeans. Read about true African history and stop flaunting your ignorance.

Slavery is as old as man. People all over the world have enslaved and sold others. Trans atlantic slavery is just a recent memory/record of slavery. Just trying to correct the impression that blacks are semi primitive cos of slavery. Whites have sold whites, blacks have sold blacks. Unfortunately, the Western media keeps pushing black on black slavery above the rest.

Is that the reason why Ibos royals were nak3d in 1870 when other Africans were wearing clothes?

Stop telling us tales, Ibos were primitive but thank Jehovah for the civilisation of Ibos. If not, Ibos would still be nak3d with communal cannibalistic feasts as daily ritual. With human meat being shared around. cheesy

Slave mentality!
The white man did not bring civilization, we have always had it, in those days, hardly was there crime, morality reigned hard.

The white maltreated your ancestors and put them into slavery.

Seriously dude, you call THAT civilisation? That's more like ignorance. Like someone said, they were supposed to be the elites of their society. Imagine what the ordinary man looked like. And just take a look at the house behind him, that's supposed to be his castle!

A man married 8 wives and left their boobs to hang out and you call that morality? Are you even aware that some elites such as Nana of Koko sold of his own people to slavery?

There was no morality bro, more like an excess of ignorance

Nigerians were all going around Unclad. The oldest fabrics in Africa were only found in Mali,Burkina faso and the South east, that explains the people that were going around Unclad before they learnt how to weave clothes from Malians and Igbos. I think i have had enough of your tribalistic bigotry from the other thread. No reasonable person wallows in ignorance after being trashed repeatedly.

OMG, what is happening to my country Nigeria, cant believe that people are still ignorant of the existence of a historical icon, taught in every African history class around the world, revered by the white man, first document millionaire from black Africa, Man who spoke more English and married white women, had the foresight to send his children to be educated by the whiteman. I am a direct descendant of King Jaja and his lineage is well preserved and intact. Take a trip to Opobo town in present day Rivers state and find out for yourself. There are dozens of books and thousands of publications about him, educate yourselves people.

Ha!

No, Ibos were the only nak3d ones. Others have been wearing clothes since time immemorial. And this thread also proves that. Or do you want me to post the pictures of other tribes in Nigeria, in 1870, and compare them to this one and other pictures of Ibos?

Now see how these married women are walking around half nude.
But 2day if a young girl shows a little cleavage people will start to complain that she is a prostitute. The elderly women will start to say civilization has turned our girls to whores. They will accuse the western world of sodomizing our people.
Well we can all see now that our native ways aren't any better. Civilization did us more good than we want to admit, so all of you can shut up now!!!
