The Federal Government has inaugurated a 12 man ministerial committee to develop a blue print for affordable housing in the country. In a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Adedeji Ajibade, on behalf of Mr. George Ossi, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, weekend in Abuja, said government was concerned about the wide gap in the affordability of houses in the country. He said that the delivery of adequate and affordable housing in Nigeria as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution is yet to meet the desired expectations which has resulted in inadequate stock as a minimum of one million housing units yearly was still being expected in order to reduce the deficit and avert a housing crisis by 2020.Ossi said that about 600,000 housing units are currently being developed annually through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, and another 240,000 affordable housing by the Federal Housing Authority, 240,000 low cost housing units under the prototype housing scheme as well as the development of new towns and cities in the states of the federation.

it is different, you need to understand the difference between an ad-hoc committee and an administrative committee.

When you bring people (old men from their mansions abroad) to come and look into a trivial issue (e.g a committee to summarise the report of another committee), then that is stupidityy (see GEJ 2011, Jona 2012, Ebele 2013 and JoeJoe 2014).

On the other hand,

When you set up a committee of relevant ministry officials from different ministries, to harness respective efforts towards eliminating bureaucracy and administrative bottlenecks in the implementation of a presidential directive, then it is called a working committee.

In this case, the construction of housing estates requires administrative inputs of ministry of national planning, finance, works, housing, labour and office of due process. Hence the need for a committee of relevant officials from each ministry to come into a committee if the project is to sail seamlessly in no time.

There you have the difference.

My suggestion is to bring down the price of building materials in particular cement.

The cost of cement is neither here nor there. The cost of purchasing and registering land is what is prohibitive. And then one needs a sensible mortgage industry to offer a minimum of ten or fifteen year mortgages so that people can divert money spent on rent, to paying for their own properties. Then again there must be faster routes to repossession and resale of properties where the owner defaults on his mortgage. A 3 bedroom flat can easily be built for 4-6 million to suit the purchasing power of the common man.

I feel your decision of "no comment" because one cannot really tell if their intention is to work for the country or APC.

Hopefully, it is an avenue to address the biting housing deficit across the country as opposed to using Federal funds to build houses for a few party cronies and party members in a few selected geopolitical zones of the country.

Every Nigerian knows exactly what i'm saying.
