At least try avoid them ehn, cause na real embarrassment to dey speak this kind english. If na pidgin you prefer to speak, no problem. But say na English, abeg speak correct one o jare. I need a matured guy to take care of my needs •Matured is used to describe plants, not humans. "Mature" is the correct word. This soup is very pepperish •The word "pepperish" does not exist in spoken English. "Peppery" is the correct word. You are too immatured for my liking •Immatured is for plants. "Immature" is the correct word. Are you hearing me? •People say this a lot when on the phone, but it's wrong. "Can you hear me" is right. My names are Richard Kehinde Edward •Your first name, last name and middle name, form a "full name". When strangers ask for your name, they mean your full name, and how many full names do you have?......One! So better put, "my name is Richard Kehinde Edward". Can you recite the poem off head? • "Off head" means without a head, that would mean having your head cut-off. What you should say is "can you recite the poem by heart". She studied Accounting at the university •Accounting is not a discipline but a process of taking account. What you study is "Accountancy". I heard you are sick, sorry! •Only say sorry when you are responsible for a pain/misfortune. The right thing to say is "I heard you fell sick, hope you get better soon" Send original copies of your document to my desk •Copies of an item are never original (that's why it is a copy and not the original) . What you should say is "send copies of your original document to my desk". I didn't cheat on my husband, that's the honest truth •There's nothing like dishonest truth. You can only speak "the truth". I have forgotten my pin number •There's no such thing as pin number. Simply say "forgotten my pin". Buy your friend mineral to drink •What's mineral? Except you mean mineral resources lol. Simply say "soft drink or beverage". My senior brother beats me each time I talk back •Your "older" brother. Senior is used to describe ranks (hierarchy), not blood relations. She's my junior sister •Your "younger" sister. I hate tea-bag kind of tea, I prefer normal tea •What you call normal tea (milk, milo, sugar, hot water) is not tea. It is called "hot chocolate". Tea are beverages made from tea bags. When are you going to go to Abuja • "When do you leave for Abuja" is the correct thing to say. You can't be going to go. There was no traffic today, so I made it to work early • "No traffic" means there wasn't any moving car on the road, which is not true. Instead say, there was "less traffic". Have you had your bathe? •This is incorrect, what you should say is "have you had a bath// or// have you showered" Lol, see as I dey yarn like say English don help anybody . God bless una. Plenty full here...Follow "phonetikkks" to reduce the gbagaun. https://www.nairaland.com/2445794/common-mispronunciations-should-avoid 2 Likes 1 Share |

some of these are grammatical errors but some are correct English, just Nigerian English its actually beneficial to know how to speak both English English and the Nigerian kind a lot of the time when I speak "the proper way" the person cant understand me its more about context, too many people use "English" to oppress others |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Hila12(m): 11:44pm On Jul 13, 2015 |
Gurgle: But can't be correct english and "Nigerian" at the same time na. Choose who you serve Jesus or Caesar |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Gurgle(f): 11:48pm On Jul 13, 2015 |
Hila12: but when you speak "correct" nobody gets what youre saying my personal favourite is the way Nigerians say "therefore" and "thereby" when having an argument. I can never stop laughing at that and its interesting how Nigerians tend to use words that have been left behind in the UK, like prostrate, rusticate etc I had never even heard of those words before I came to nairaland And the way they say "this your" or "that your", like this your book and "cloth" instead of "clothes" and my own instead of mine |

Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Lanretoye(m): 2:14am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Gurgle:you are right, just like saying 'coming to come' |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Gurgle(f): 2:22am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Lanretoye: you cant compare the two words, going has more dimension as a word than coming going doesn't just refer to physically moving like coming does, it can also refer to the future tense. which coming cannot do going to is the same as saying "will" coming to is just when one is physically or figuratively moving towards something |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Lanretoye(m): 2:26am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Gurgle:Nigerian english as in shaybi there is food, abi u will eat, that is ur cup of tea sha, don't tell me that joor! |

Lanretoye: well that's pidgin which I would say is different from Nigerian English |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Lanretoye(m): 2:44am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Gurgle:coming has other meanings as well. |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Gurgle(f): 2:49am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Lanretoye: thank you Sir |
Re: Cute Bae, Why So Much Gbagaun? by Gurgle(f): 2:52am On Jul 14, 2015 |
Lanretoye: lol! sneaky modification that is "by the way" the point is that you cant use going to go in the same way as coming to come whether coming has other meanings or not, the way you used it was redundant in those circumstances |
