Medical Students in Benue State University, Makurdi have deposited the coffin of their dead colleague at the office of the vice chancellor in protest.

BENUE.COM.NG understands that their colleague, Idoko Nicholas Inalegwu died in an accident under controversial circumstances after receiving the news of his withdrawal from medical school after spending 10 years.

Idoko was withdrawn for failing a haphazardly organised resit exam that has bedevilled medical students in the institution over the years.

Speaking under anonymity in a telephone conversation, one of the students said they believe that Idoko took his own life because he couldn’t bear the news that his 10 years in medical was in vain.

“He had been talking about it, that he wish he died a painless death. The school have finished him. There is no where in the world that a medical student is withdrawn after spending 10 years.” He said.

Our source said the students had complained about the manner in which exams were conducted, where resit exams were prolonged for up to one whole year as against the stipulated six weeks, with no efforts to engage the students.

After spending 12 years without graduation, that many of the students in the medical school have become disillusioned,  frustrated, depressed and some have attempted suicide due to the stagnation and irregularities but the school management was continuously adamant about the psychological effects of their long stay in medical school.

The students, after an altercation at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary, obtained the coffin of their dead colleague marched to the VC’s office, vowing not to leave until their grievances with bother around the haphazard conduct of exams, manipulation of results, withdrawals and accreditation, are resolved.

All efforts to reach the vice chancellor for comments have been abortive.

RIP to the dead. This is no news at all as I have witnessed such ill treatment meted at medical students some years back in ABU and I am sure other schools also face similar challenges.

Think frustration, think medical school. This trend must stop.

The story of the medical students in BSU is one very pathetic story. First set who enrolled in 2003 are still yet to graduate partly due to accreditation issues and politics. That is13 years studying a 7years course. Smh.

May his soul RIP.

Nigerian higher institutions have been frustrating students since time immemorial. Educational institutions are supposedly designed to make learning meaningful but the reverse has been the case with many Nigerian institutions of higher learning. SMH!

I don't really blame Nigerians who travel abroad for education. Nigeria educational system is a mess!

Anybody who chooses to study medicine in BSU is suicidal. They've not graduated any medical doctor after 13 years of establishment. I doubt if the school is accredited.
