HealthPopulation And Sustainable Development By Baba Ali Mustapha by 247tops(op): 3:49pm On Apr 04, 2017
Sustainable development aims at improving human well-being, particularly by alleviating poverty, increasing gender equality, and improving health, human resources and stewardship of the natural environment. Because demographic factors are closely linked to their goals, strategies that consider population have a better chance of success. Accordingly, the international conference on population and development in Cairo in 1994 recognized that population policy should be oriented toward improving social conditions and expanding choices for individuals. The key recognition was that focusing on people-their right, capabilities and opportunities would have multiple benefits for individuals, for society and for their sustainable relationship with the environment. Hence consideration of sustainable development policies must include population growth and distribution, mobility differential vulnerability, and the empowerment of the people, especially women.

WORLD POPULATION CHANGE

We live in a world of unprecedented demographic change. Global population increased by 2 billion during the last quarter of the 20th century, reaching 6 billion in 2000. Despite declining fertility rate, population increase by another 2 billion during the first decades of the 21st century bringing the total to 8 billion. Nearly all of this growth occurred in developing countries and is concentrated among the poorest communities and in urban areas. We also live in a world of unprecedented demographic diversity. Traditional demographic grouping of countries are breaking down. Over the next 25 years increases in population in sub-Sahara Africa, South Asia and the Middle East are expected to be larger than the past quarter century, and growth in North America will be substantial as well. In contrast, in most European countries and in East Asia, population growth has slowed or stopped, and rapid population aging has become a serious concern. Mortality also varies widely across regions, with the burden of infectious disease, including HIV/AIDs, being particularly heavy in Africa. In additions, levels of mobility, urbanization and education differ substantially among and within regions, affecting economic and health out looks. This diversity presents different challenges requiring differentiated response. The most urgent of these occur where rapid population growth, high level of poverty and environmental degradation coincide.

POPULATION MATTERS TO DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT

Research has shown that changes in population growth, age structure and special distribution interact closely with the environment and with development. Rapid population growth has exacerbated fresh water depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss, depletion of fisheries and other coastal resources, and degradation of agricultural lands. Fertility decline in high fertility countries, by slowing population growth, can make many environmental problems easier to solve. It can also have important economic benefits by reducing the number of children relative to the working-age population and creating a unique opportunity to create investments in health, education, infrastructure and environmental protection. In high income countries, the environmental impact of population growth and distribution must be considered jointly with high consumption rates. Even in countries where little growth is envisioned, unsustainable patterns of consumption have global implications for the environment and human are well-being, and must be addressed with appropriate policies. Before the end of this decade, the majority of the world’s population will live in urban areas. Urbanization can improve people’s access to education, health and other services. But it also creates environmental health hazards, such as water and air population, and by increasing consumption can have environmental impact in distant rural areas as well. The mobility and spatial distribution of populations, especially at local and regional scales; is a significant determinant of sustainability. Where the population lives and works relative to the location of natural resources affects environmental quality. The expansion of the agricultural frontier and other human activity is encroaching on fragile ecosystems in many part of the world.

SOME WAY TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS.

Two policies have multiple benefits for individual welfare, for social and economic development, and for the environment. One is investment in voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs. Since research has shown that many women in high fertility countries have more children than they actually went, these programs allow couples to have the number of children they desire, thus, reducing unwanted childbearing and lowering fertility rates. Lower fertility lead to slower population growth, allowing more time for coping with the adverse effect of that growth, and easily stress on the environment. The other to policy priority is education. Education enhances individual choice, fosters women’s empowerment, and improves gender equality. Better educated people are in better health, and often contribute to greater environmental awareness. The increased economic productive and technological advance that education induces can lead to less pollution, intensive production. It may also reduce vulnerability to environmental change by facilitating access to information and the means to protect oneself. Furthermore, in countries with rapid population growth, the fertility depressing effect of education contributes to reducing the scale of human impact on the environment. Those two policies-education and reproductive health programs are in high demand by individuals almost universally because their multiple benefits are clear. They also empower individual to make informed choices. Efforts to achieve sustainable development should give them the highest priority. To facilitate the joint consideration of population, development and environment, more interdisciplinary research and education addressing these topics is necessary at all levels. The different disciplines should also conduct their studies in ways that make the result mutually accessible. Training about the nature of this interaction is apriority issue for the policy making community, media, and scientists.

Correction: University of Maiduguri's current VC is Prof. Ibrahim A. Njodi
IslamCompanions Of The Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) By Baba Ali Mustapha by 247tops(op):
“My companions are like guiding stars. Follow any one of them and you will be guided aright”. So runs a saying of the Messenger of Allah. History saw the literal fulfillment of these prophetic words. The author of the History of the Arabs, Phillip K. Hitti enthusiastically declares: ‘

After the death of the Prophet, sterile Arabia seems to have been converted, as if by magic, into a nursery of heroes, the like of Whom, both in numbers and quality, is hard to find anywhere.

H.G. Wells in the outline of History, write in a similar strain:

“And the military campaign that now began were among the most brilliant in the world’s history. Arabia had suddenly become a garden of ‘finemen’”.

Willian stearns Davis, another Western writer, observed in his short history of the Near East: “the stimulus of opportunity developed great strategies and tactician among their chiefs. Such generals as Khalid, the sword of Allah, Amr, the conqueror of Egypt, Mu’awiya and Saad bin Abiwaqas are among the high captain of military history”.

The greatest miracle performed by Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was his unparalleled success in transforming the hitherto barbarous and little-known land of Arabia into a nursery of heroes. After the dead of the Prophet, his illustrious companions addressed themselves to the task of regenerating humanity. The task was undertaken with a zeal and accomplished with a faith that have become the marvels of history. The result was the whirlwind advance of the new awakening over most parts of the known world. Countries and people that had hitherto languished in frustrating existence suddenly discovered a new purpose in life and rose to heights of power and glory.

Apart from the Khulafa-Rashidun. Caliphar Abubakr (632-638AD) Caliphar Umar the great (634-644AD) Uthsman Ibn Affan (644-656 AD) Caliphar Ali Ibn Abu Talib (657-661AD) which were known to the world. This article briefly recounts the life stories of two of the leading companions of the Messenger of Allah. It is written in an easy graceful, most interesting and inspiring reading especially for youth and school children. These luminous star shed sure light on the path that leads to true greatness and real happiness. Because of preoccupation with affluence the modern muslim world is rapidly losing track of this path. This calamity has to be averted. It is for our youths to rediscover the path that made early muslims the benefactors and leaders of mankind.

HAMZA IBN ABDUL MUTTALIB
From early youth, Hamza was known in Mecca for his love of game, sport and chase. One afternoon as he entered the city after an exciting day of chase, he was greeted by a slave-girl. “Abu Ammara”, she shouted, “I wish you had been in the city a little earlier so that you could see that helpless plight of your nephew Muhammad. He stood in Kaaba preaching his faith when Abu Jahl came up. Without the least excuse he started getting rough with Muhammad, heaping abuse on him and molesting him, poor Muhammad uttered no word of protest and at last left the place in helplessness.

HealthOil Spills As Environmental Problem In Nigeria By Baba Ali Mustapha by 247tops(op): 9:56pm On Feb 18, 2017
Due to the negative effect of oil spillage on the environment, recently Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari flag up campaign for cleaning up of the Ogoni Land in Niger Delta region of the country, he was ably represented by the Vice President Professor Yemi Osibanjo.

Traditional environmental problems have been rife ever since the creation of man. Notable among these are the generation of domestic waste and later, industrial wastes. The generation of domestic wastes is as old as human activity or human existence, and the environmental effects are widespread.

Cases of oil spill have been an isolated issue occurring perhaps randomly in countries using oil as power source or as a source of income. The prominence gained by oil spills is mainly due to its pollution and devastating environmental effects. International recognition of oil spill seemed to have started with the oil spill from the Torrey Canyon disaster of 1967 in a reef in the English Channel. This oil spill with the attendant pollution then attracted the attention of the French and English governments. Further developments in oil activities in other countries of the world resulted in other cases of oil spills in different parts of the globe.

Oil in this context and in all its ramifications connotes petroleum, and all its allied products. Oil spill parse can be said to connote the process of oil accidentally coming out or seeping out from pipe or any other container, hitherto containing oil. Put more succinctly, oil spill is an accidentally or intentional discharge of oil which may reach water bodies (FEPA, 1991) or any other part of land. In this sense, the type of oil spill can include petrol spill, gas spill and diesel spill. The effect of any of these spillages is not negligible.

As already indicated, oil spills occur in oil producing/consuming areas of the world. In Nigeria, cases of oil spill are rife. One is reported by Imerson (1976) to have occurred in Bomu in 1970 where oil was spilled over an area of approximately 108 hectares. Other cases of oil spill in Nigeria is reported by Ogbonna (1981) include the Obagi spill in 1971...... continue reading: http://www.247tops.net/2017/02/oil-spills-as-environmental-problem-in.html

The first controversy of UNIMAID INTER-FACULTY COMPETITION occurred during the first quarterfinal game between FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (Green) and FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE (Orange) when one of the assistant referees used his eyes to award a goal to the FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES who were already leading. This decision sparked uproar from the supporters of the losing team who were later compensated with the refusal of the centre referee to award a penalty when the goal keeper of the FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE deliberately kicked his opponent in the box. More actions are expected to start across other events like basketball, volleyball, handball, etc.

All roads led to the Sports Complex for the opening ceremony of the most anticipated sporting event in the University of Maiduguri. Tagged "INTER-COLLEGE/FACULTY SPORTS COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS", the 12 days event with over 200 athletes from the various college/faculties is set to exercise and re-energized the students for the upcoming exams slated for next month. The competition was kicked off with an opening game between:
FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE (Green)
versus:
FACULTY OF EDUCATION (Yellow and Black)

The game was officiated by Grema Mohammed (DUSKE) and the first goal of the tournament came from Saleh who took advantage of the poor defence of the farmers to put the teachers in an early lead before Abuchi doubled the lead before half time.

As SuperStar DJ Xclusive will always say "THIS IS FOOTBALL, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN", the farmers cultivated their first goal when Emmanuel got himself on the score sheet after taking a low level shot to beat the goalkeeper who was left frustrated. It took no much time before Abdulrahman planted another goal in the teachers' post to pull a huge comeback for the farmers. The game ended 2-2 in normal time and it was penalty time as everybody around pitch was tensed.
