Call her 'Aunty Pikin', don't worry you won't lose your invite to "Beauty For Purpose Charity Gala Ball" as this is the new name Her Majesty Queen Winifred, TNQ 2016 is being called whenever she visits children. This week was no different as the ever dazzling Queen accompanied by Queen Lucia Adamma Udoh, TNQ 2016 1st Runner Up and the National Director Princess Preye paid a visit to DE MARILLAC CENTRE (For Street Children) . The pretty Queen Winifred restated her commitment in ensuring that children get qualitative education and better shelter. She also promised to use her Office as the reigning Queen to open talks and encourage governmental agencies to do more on child-related matters. See what she wrote on her visit below: "Today I and Lucia Udoh Nigerian Queen 2016 1st runner up with the National director paid a visit to DE MARILLAC CENTRE (For Street Children) . It wasn't one of those my pleasure visit. It was painful to see homeless children both girls and boys, it's my believe that No child chooses to live on the streets. Sadly, even in our modern, globalized world, many children continue to live on the streets. Many thanks to Daughters of charity of St. Vincent De Paul for providing shelter for these children. It is not about the food or cash we donated but their ability to keep showing that captivating smiles on their beautiful faces despite their environment. It shows they have hope and that hope will return greatness to them. I'm also using this opportunity to ask those in authorities to please help these children. They are also the leaders of tomorrow." Armed robbers on Monday attacked the Jos home of Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi. The robbers who were four in number took away several valuable items including a white Toyota Highlander and an undisclosed amount of cash. The Punch learnt that no live was lost although they physically assaulted the father of the Nigerian international. The footballer who spoke to a close friend in Nigeria from his base in Turkey, Onazi disclosed that the robbers pretended to be courier men with a letter to be delivered to his father. He said, “Those robbers came, pretending they were there to deliver a letter to my dad at about 1.40pm on Monday. But as soon as he collected their fake letter and asked where it was coming from they swooped on him, tied his hands, beat him up, inflicting machete cuts on him in the process. ” They told him this is the first in a series of attacks that they will launch on our house and that I( Onazi) will be their target the next time. “Those guys took their time to take some valuable materials including car and some cash but I am thankful to God they didn’t do more than that.” Already, the brothers of the Eagles star and other family members have reported the incident to the police who have promised to bring the hoodlums to book and also help with the recovery of the stolen items. Ogenyi Onazi’s dad has also been discharged from hospital where he was treated for the injuries inflicted on him during the ordeal. http://punchng.com/robbers-attack-onazis-jos-home/

The sacred land of Palestine considered the land of monotheistic Prophets, has been inhabited by Arabs for centuries according to Islamic teachings and traditions. Muslims firmly believe in those Prophets and their names have been repeatedly mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Bait-Ul-Moqaddas (Jerusalem) is one of the ancient cities of the world currently under the illegitimate rule of the Zionists Regime. From this city, the Holy Prophet of Islam’s ascension to heaven took place. Throughout the centuries, the history of this heavenly city intertwined with bloody conflicts and conquests by many powers among them crusaders, Turks, Muslims, Persians and the British. Salahudin Ayyubi (Saladin) of the greatest Muslim commanders from a Kurdish family in Iraq, made historic victories in several wars to crust the crusaders and eventually liberated Jerusalem in 1192. His advantageous political, military and economic position was further enhanced by the popularity of the Jihad (holy struggle) against the crusaders, an idea in which he fervently believed. Even today the name of this prominent Islamic warrior is associated with dignity and honor and will never be forgotten. He is not only appreciated in his bravery, in crushing those who occupied Islamic territories but also for the message of unity, he brought for Islamists. According to historical documents Palestine’s native residents were mainly Arabs. In the 16th century, Palestine became a part of Turkey’s Ottoman Empire. During World War I, as the colonists spread their supremacy and influence in Islamic territories, British forces occupied Palestine, apparently because Turkey allied with Germany. The British Foreign secretary, Arthus Balfour, declared his support for the establishment of Jewish state in Palestine. The famous Balfour Declaration was confirmed by governments at war with Turkey following British support, the state of Israel was established in 1948. The six-day war of 1967 left Israel in possession of the whole of Jerusalem, the West Bank area of Jordan, the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip in Egypt, the Gaza Strip and the Golden Hight in Syria. East Jerusalem was almost immediately integrated into Israel, while other occupied territories were regarded as “Occupied Areas” Unity of Muslims Shortly after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, in a symbolic gesture, Iman Khomeini declared the Last Friday of Holy month of Ramadan as the global day of Qods. This announcement a turning point in the history of the Islamic Revolution had tremendous impact on the world of Islam, inviting massive members of Muslim to participate in an all-out struggle against the Zionist regime. The goal behind the Imam’s call was to mobilize Muslims world over in all political, cultural and economic strata and to wage full-fledged war against world arrogance, particularly the United State and Israel. The Imam firmly believed that while Muslims make up one-fourth of the world population and enjoy natural resources along with huge petrol-dollar wealth, why should Muslim governments not play a decisive role in liberating the occupied territories still under occupation by the Zionist Regime? Imam Khomeine always deeply regretted the tragedy of Palestine. His guidelines revived the culture of Resistance against the enemies of Islam in almost Muslims living in the remotest parts of the World. The long standing policy of the Islamic Republic, spelled out by the Late leader of the Islamic Revolution, finds reality by total annihilation of the Zionist Regime with which Muslims should in no way compromise. Every year on this glorious occasion, Muslims all over the world hold rallies to demonstrate their firm determination to liberate the first Qibla of Muslims and the third holiest site of Islam. The massive demonstration will ultimately draw widespread attention to the majesty of Islam from the oppressors of the world. The ceremonies marking the global day of Qods in Muslim countries and else where in the world in recent years have had outstanding repercussions. The Muslim people demonstrate their anger and protest the current negotiation between the Israeli government and some Arab States. The Palestinian revolutionary movement in the second half of the 20th century are an everlasting erupting volcano in spite of numerous conspiracies orchestrated by the United State and Israeli is deeply rooted in the religious belief of Muslims. According to political observers, three major factors, Israeli crimes, betrayal of Arab State and anger of the people, have always been supplementary to one another in Middle East geo-politics. On Qods days, Muslim nation display their solid demonstration to struggle against Israel, the symbol of aggression, massacre, state terrorism and numerous other criminal acts. On Qods day, people not only shout slogans against Tel Aviv regime but also express their fury against the so called Muslim governments which by keeping silence, have paved the way for the occupation of Islam territories. In previous years on Qods Days the Israeli regime repeatedly prohibited Muslim Palestinians from performing congregational prayers in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, while at the same time in some demonstration against Israelis. In view of the statement of some Arab State, there seems to be no difference between them and the Zionist regime as they pursue the same strategy exercised by the Zionists. To put it in a nutsheel, they are the two side of the same coin. Baba Ali Mustapha is with the Department of Planning/Research, Ministry of Environment, Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. http://247tops..com.ng/2016/09/qods-culture-of-resistance-by-baba-ali.html

Former member of the defunct Plantashun Boiz, Blackface, was recently in the eye of the storm when he accused his former label-mate, 2face Idibia and Wizkid of copyright thefts. Blackface had claimed that 2face denied him credit in a song they wrote together while they were still in the same group. Meanwhile, it should be recalled that Blackface had also cried foul during the height of 2face’s ‘African Queen’ reign. Blackface stated that he was the one who wrote the song, and therefore deserves to get the credit and royalties from it. The matter was later resolved and Blackface was said to have settled. However, Blackface has refused to speak further about these weighty allegations. Showtime ran into him recently, and we sought to know the current situation, to which he said, “I don’t want to talk about those allegations anymore though they are not yet settled. Copyright will take care of itself at the right time. I’m not worried about issues right now.” Blackface also mentioned that he recently released a new album, ‘The Defender’ which he encouraged fans to get ‘because it’s a good album.’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/ive-not-settled-fights-2face-wizkid-others-blackface/

Typology and Effects of Global Environmental Problems: Recent years have witnessed a growing awareness of the need for better understanding of the effect of man’s activities on all facets of the global environment. This is reflected in an increased concern for the planning and exploitation of global resources, mounting fear for over the long term, large scale and synergistic effect of environmental pollution, interest in the long-term stability and productivity of the earth’s ecosystems and the global biosphere and generally heightened sensitivity to notions of environmental quality (Park; 1980; Ayuba, 2004). The areas of concern have crystallized in recent years due to mounting realization that the effect of man on his environment are now in many cases of a global scale, and there are few areas of natural environment where at least some forms of human impact are not apparent. Further impetus derives from recognition of the interdependence of many environmental problems because of the unity and complexity of the biosphere. Many observers of environmental problems are becoming increasing alarmed at the extent to which, and the speed with which human impacts in one part of the environment can trigger off serious if not irreversible changes in other parts of the environment. These secondary effects often occur in different places to the initial impact and they often become apparent only after a time lag. Prescription of cause and effect in environmental problems essential for wise environmental management and conservation thus becomes extremely difficult. Bennet and Chiorley (1978) advised that one approach to the diagnosis and solution of environmental problems lies in systems analysis, and it involves viewing the environment as a series of interconnected system, so that attention is focused on the external stimuli, internal functioning, and adjustment of the environmental systems. Survey, which aim to assess the significance of human impact on ecological systems, have now attained high priority (NEST, 1992; Haine-Youg, 1991; Hitzhusen 1993, Ibrahim, 2003). Unfortunately, some of man’s physical landscape alterations are dramatic in impact whereas other effects are far more subtle (both in form and in scale), so that consequences are difficult to identify, let alone remedy. A complete examination of the different types of environmental problems is thus a stupendous taste. This research examines selected global environmental problems and their effects on the environment. (1) DEFORESTATION The removal of cover of natural woodland had often been regarded as the starting point for modern land deterioration (Mather, 1983). Deforestation is a complex environmental problem and its consequences manifest themselves in several forms such as erosion, flash floods, reduced stream flow, drought, fuelwood scarcity, sedimentation and microclimatic changes. Deforestation (BoWonder, 1983) is caused by indiscriminate felling of trees for fuel wood, clear felling of forests for plantations, shifting cultivation, intensive grazing in forests, large-scale extraction of wood for paper and pulp manufacturing, conversion of forest for agriculture and poor effects for forest-regeneration in term of input and investments. The developing countries together deforest 11.3 million hectares per year (Guppy, 1984). In countries like India, Haiti, Indonesia, Malaysia, Tanzania and Brazil, the deforestation problem is severe. Over 250,000 hectares are converted to non-forest land use each year (Wood, 1991). The major reason for forest degradation is the fuel wood collection by the poorer section of the population. Fuel wood use exceeds 1.6m3 per capital per year in Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, South Korea, Liberia, Cameroun and Sierra Leone, (BroWonder, 1986). In many developing countries, fuel wood use per capital is on the increase. Fuel wood extraction in a number of countries such as Burundi, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt is more than the sustainable yield (Bowonder, 1983; NEST 1998). Both economic and biological over-extraction of tropical forests will continue because of the common property status and high price of forest resources induced by the fuel wood shortage. In the case of common property resources, institutional mechanisms for stimulating the capital stock are rather weak. Some of the consequences of deforestation are extinction of species, loss of fixed carbon, and reduced capability of the soil to store water, which makes the farming systems sensitive to droughts. Deforestation causes a number of physical changes and reversing all of them is not possible. Some of the changes that follow deforestation are stream flow increases, transpiration is reduced, concentration of dissolved organics in water is increased, erosion increases, soil temperature increases, rate of decomposition increases, rate of nitrification increases, canopy absorption is reduced, and dissolved substance in the soil increase. Tropical deforestation can have severe consequences to the farming capability which is the base for development in highly populated developing countries. The main reason for this is that in Africa and Asia, majority of the areas have leached and weathered soil with low nutrients and clearing reduces the productivity drastically. It will not be easy to reverse the trends of deforestation in the short run, since the problem is linked to the satisfaction of a basic need. While the temperature zone forests are afflicted by industrial air pollution, particularly from acid rain, the tropical forests are decreasing because of deforestation is not compensated by reforestation. In Europe and North America, widespread damage of the forests has been reported (Purdis, 1983). In Canada, green forests are turning gray. South of Quebec City, the maple forest that makes the area the world’s maple Syrup capitals are dying in huge numbers. Damaged trees are in an area that is severely affected by acid rain from Ontario, Quebec and U.S Industries. Thus, the impact of civilized man on forests in recent centuries has had drastic short-term effects and is likely to have far reaching effects on the biosphere. Those forest ecosystems are both stable and vulnerable; their survival through geological time shows that they possess a great capacity to withstand the climatic and other hazards of the natural environment but when faced with man and modern technology, they prove very fragile. It is suggested (Skoupy, 1991) that forest ecosystem programmes should focus attention on: (i) Assessment and monitoring of forest cover and quality of ecosystems at global and regional scale and in selected cases at lower level; (ii) Monitoring climatic, hydrological or pedological and ecological conditions of plants, (iii) Formulation and promotion of program of activities for sustainable management of tropical forests, development of environmentally sound farming and forestry practices including agroforestry. (iv) Promotion and support of research in the fields of integrated management of forest resources, biological diversity and process and forest genetic resources; (v) Improving and controlling the use of fuel wood and charcoal, and pursuing alternative sources of energy and (vi) Maintaining and protecting existing vegetation, and revegetating damage areas. Unless long-term perspectives are introduced in the policy-making framework, the existing resource utilization patterns and trends of forest depletion will continue. (2) SOIL EROSION Soil erosion is the removal of soil by wind, water and mass movements at a faster rate than at which new soil forms. It involves the detachment and transportation of soil particles from one location and eventual deposition at another point. In soil erosion and conservation texts (Hudson, 1971; Faniran and Areola, 1978, FAO Soil Bulletins), fundamental distinction is made between erosion at natural rates and that at accelerated rates. It is generally implicit that for natural rates of erosion, a balance exists between the rates of soil loss and soil formation, and that man is the chief cause of upsetting this balance. On a global scale, soil erosion is associated with misuse of the land where the soil is inadequate protected by plant cover. It occurs with arable cropping, overgrazing, mining and intensive recreational use. The most serious form of soil degradation is thus from accelerated soil erosion. The rate of soil erosion caused by water and wind exceeds by far its renewal rate (about 0.5cm in 100 years, Doos, 1994); in temperature regions by about 10-20 times and in the tropics by twice as much (Swaminathan, 1991). The total global reservoir of soil has been estimated to be about 3.5 x 1012 metric tons and the rate of erosion above replacement to be about 23 x 109 metric ton per year (Brown 1984, 1988). The annual loss of soil is thus about 0.7%, which implies that by 2025, the loss of soil will be somewhat more than 20% of the total reservoir. In Africa, 11.6% of the total area is affected by water erosion that 22.4% by wind erosion, in the Near East 17.1% of the total area is affected by water erosion, 35.5% by wind erosion (FAO Soil Bulletin, 1983) Erosion removes the top soil, the zone of plant nutrients and thus causes steady reduction of soil fertility. Food crop are the worst hit by this development due to their shallow rooting systems. The decline in agricultural production resulting in food shortages, high food prices and famine, adversely affect the nutrition and health of the population and cause decline in productivity. There is drastic reduction in land productivity for agriculture. In the case of Gully erosion, the land may become sub-maginal and no longer useful of any purpose. Much of the eroded soils are deposited in water system leading to pollution and siltation by sand and particulate. The result is drastic reduction water volume and quality, and eventually siltation and drying of rivers, water reservoirs and dams. The aquatic life is eventually eliminated. Pollution and siltation of water system, including flooding have adverse consequences for economic life of local communities, and could result in the displacement of communities downstream. Water supply for domestic and industrial purposes would become scarce and more expensive. Soil erosion causes the terrain to be grossly uneven and where soil parent material is exposed, it is necessary to undertake filling before civil construction and other infrastructural works such as building bridges and roads can be carried out. The site reclamation which this situation demands is very expensive and may increase the overall cost by up to 30%. Moreover, additional costs must be incurred to protect such susceptible site against further erosion. The need for prevention and control of erosion through timely and appropriate management techniques and other measures cannot be overemphasized. The basic aim of management of erosion should be to stabilize the soil for maintenance of high productivity and raising living standards of the dependent communities. For effective management of soil erosion, emphasis should be in prevention of deterrent measures among which the establishment of appropriate tree/vegetation cover in exposed soil and adaptation of suitable land use practices are most important. Measures for early detection of onset of soil erosion and immediate application of solution to retard its expansion are mandatory. (3) DESERTIFICATION According to the United Nation Programme-World Conference in Desertification, desertification is the diminution or destruction of the biological potential of land leading ultimately to desert-like conditions. Desertification is a self-accelerating process, feeding on itself, and as it advances, rehabilitation cost rise exponentially (UNCOD, 1977). Kassas (1988) define desertification as primarily a man-made ecological degradation by which, bio-productivity potential (in economic terms) of land is reduced. This is often a gradual process that operates through systems of land use that overtax inherent bio-productive capacity. There is now a strong global mood for re-assessment of earlier definitions and earlier basic assumptions about the process of desertification. Opinion on swinging in the direction of seeing desertification as a slow and insidious process of land degradation, which is on the one hand exacerbated by prolonged drought, and on the other, by carelessness in resources use by human population. In that respect, the following is offered as possible compromise definition, which should satisfy the scientific as well as the development communities, desertification is the process of land degradation characteristics of the arid, semi-arid and sub-humid area of the world. The process, which is largely human-induced, is normally exacerbated by adverse climatic conditions such as prolonged drought or desiccation, which enable it to strike at the land resource base by weakening the physical, biological and economical potential of the land, thereby severely reducing or curtailing overall productivity (Odiongo, 1990). The areas most affected by desertification are mainly on the fringes of the great deserts (The Sahara, Kalahari, Atacama, Australian, Chinese and the Arabians); that is, in arid lands (200-250 mm annual rain) and semi-arid lands (250-800 mm) representing more than 30 million square kilometers (20%) of the earth’s surface. This research was based ion historical research conducted in 1995, it has brought to light the historical roots of Palestinian problem. Zionists argue that their occupation of the Land of Palestine is not an occupation at all but a ‘rightful claiming of the land of their fathers’. History shows, however, that the Palestinians are the original inhabitants who, long before any Jew, let alone Zionist arrived there, were scattered into many tribes with many languages. Later, especially with the arrival of Islam in Palestine, they adopted Arabic as their language. Zionist shamelessly draw its justification Myth from the Bible and Israel has been remarkably successful in projecting its existence as being ‘biblical’. This is why many people in Europe and America support Israel as an act of faith. In 1969 when Mrs Golda Meir said: ‘The Palestinian people do not exist’ she betrayed the typical Zionist sentiment towards Palestinians, for as long as there are Palestinians, the world will be reminded of the theft and murder of Zionists committed and still are committing in order to have created Israel. Often Israel’s critics are accused of anti-Semitism. Palestinians are a Semitic people, yet when Israel kills tens of thousands, places hundreds of thousands and rob them all their natural and indisputable homeland, no one calls, or even think of this, as anti-Semitism. In 1919, Jews owned 2.5% of all the land of Palestine, but the United Nation’s partition plan allotted 56% of all land to them. Between 1948-1950 approximately 385 Palestinian towns and villages were destroyed. ‘Redemption of the land’ is what Zionists call these practices. The United Nations assisted in creating the state of Israel but never have they done anything to stop further usurpation of Arab land by Zionists. Up till today Israel refuse to stop the construction of Jewish settlement in the West Bank and Gaza. Without American support, Israel, would cease to exist. In 1995, when Israel deported 415 Palestinians to the South of Lebanon, America made it very clear that they would veto all United Nation’s plan to impose sanctions against Israel. It would seem as if Israel has the right to do whatever she pleases, whenever she pleases. (FROM THEIR 1987/88 CONSTITUTION) The unpopular leader in many Middle Eastern countries are willing to negotiate for “peace” with Israel. Egypt is by far the leader in this wholesale treachery by her signing and continued conformance to Camp David Accord. Saudi Arabia has never lifted a finger to help liberate Palestine, yet they are willing to use their weapon against Islam and the Muslim. Even the PLO has become so confused and dictionless that they have decided to recognize Israel’s ‘right’ to exist. All of this is happening at the expense of Palestine and the Palestinians. It is the fault of every Muslim that the struggle for the liberation of Palestine has become such a protracted struggle. In 1994, there were 45 cases of Palestinians who were killed by Israel commandos disguised as Arabs. The purpose behind this is to incite division and violence among Palestinians. ZIONIST MYTHS THE U.N ‘CREATED ISRAEL’ Israeli spokesmen and Zionists sympathizers often try to create the impression that Israel is specially sacrosanct among the countries of the world because it was ‘created’ by the United Nations. This does not prevent them on other occasions asserting (as Goida Meir was wont to do) that Israel does not require or care about any International approval or sanction because its existence rest on a higher authority that if the ‘historic title of the Jewish people to Eretz Israel’. The alleged ‘creation of Israel by the U.N crops up most often in Zionist criticism of the attempt by the Arabs to prevent the partition of Palestine and emergence of the state of Israel in 1947-48. The implication is that the Arab resort to arms at the time was a peculiarly heinous defiance of the authority and wishes of the world at large (as explained below, some Israel were no less ready to defy the U.N and to resort to arms in order to frustrate partition). Points which deserve consideration in judging the validity of this presentation of events are the following: (1) It is debatable that whether the United Nations was in fact competent under International law to partition or otherwise dispose of the territory of Palestine against the wishes of the clear majority of its inhabitants. (2) The U.N partition resolution was adopted by the General Assembly, not the Security Council. Resolution of the General Assembly have the force of recommendation to member state of the U.N but not (unlike those the Security Council) possess any mandatory force. (3) The partition resolution did not by any mean command general support outside the Arab World. It was adopted by a vote of 33 to 13 with 10 abstentions. Among those abstaining was the United Kingdom. (4) The resolution was moreover procured only by pressure and arm-twisting by the United States. Some days before it was put to the vote. It seemed unlikely to abstain the necessary two-thirds majority. But several postponements gave Zionists and sympathizers among United States officialdom opportunity to put pressure on China, Ethiopia, Greece, Haiti, Liberia and the Philippines, of which are intended to vote against partition, Greece, alone, withstood the pressure. (5) At that time, the U.N was still far from representative of the whole world community. If the proposal in partition Palestine were put to the General Assembly as it exists today, it would probably be rejected by an over-whelming majority. (6) After the partition resolution was adopted and when becoming clear, even the United States has second thoughts and proposed that partition should be shelved and the whole question re-examined. By then however it was too late. The partition of Palestine was already taking place. (7) Having adopted its resolution, the General Assembly did nothing effective to carry it out nor did the Security Council or any other U.N body it was left to other to effect the actual, physical partition of the country. ( During the debate on the partition resolution, Arab spokesmen warned the world that the Palestinians with the support of other Arabs would resort to “their legitimate right of self-defense to prevent the dismemberment of Palestine against the wishes of the Arab majority of the resolution. Palestinian guerrillas took up arms to try to prevent the partition of their country. Were they wrong to do so? What would we have done in their position?(9) The Palestinians were not alone in attempting to resist partition by force. Zionists propaganda habitually asserts that the Jews in Palestine accepted the U.N plan, and it is true the Jewish agency did so. But the Irgun declared that partition was illegal and would never be recognized. They declared “Eretz Israel will be restored to the people of Israel all of it and forever. They called on the Jews to take up the offensive” not merely to repel Arab attack but also to seize all the Palestine. (10) The Palestinian guerrillas proved no match for the better armed, better organized and numerically stronger Jewish forces. Before the British withdrew and the Arabs armies intervened in May 1948, the partition was already far advanced. The Jewish forces had not only prevented any Palestinian attempt to gain control of any part of the area allocated to the Jewish state in the partition plan. They had also seized large parts of the area allocated to the Arab state and had uprooted upwards of 300,000 Palestinians from their home. Ben Gurion state that: until the British left no Jewish settlement, however remote was entered or seized by the Arabs, while the Hagannah, under severe and frequent attack, captured many Arab position and liberated Tiberius and Haifa, Jaffa and Safad. (11) In the wake of the British withdrawal, Arab armies intervened in order to support the Palestinians. But after some initial successes, they too proved no match for the Israeli forces and by the time of the cease-fire towards the end of 1948, the Israelis had seized yet more of the territory allocated to the Arabs State and had uprooted over 400,000 more Palestinians from their homes. Israel ended up in possession of nearly 80% of the whole territory of mandates Palestine as compared with the 57% allocated to the Jewish State under the U.N plan. (12) The U.N plan had envisaged that the population of the proposed Jewish State should be more or less evenly divided between Jews and Arabs, with about half a million of each as citizens of the new state. By the end of the fighting, most of the Arabs population intended for the Jewish state had been uprooted from their homes and were living as refugees. (13) The state of Israel, as it thus emerged from the conflict, bore no relation in terms of territory or population to the “Jewish State” envisaged in the U.N partition resolution. The claim that the state of Israel was the state which the U.N intended to “create” is false. Its “creators” were in fact the Hagannah, Palmach and Irdun and they certainly cannot claim the sanction of the U.N for the either the state they created or the methods they employed which included expulsion by force and terror of the Arab inhabitants. (14) After the armistices between Israel and her Arab neighbours, the General Assembly tried, belatedly, to reassert its role and implement its ill-starred proposals for the partition of Palestine. Had it succeeded, there would have been more substance in the claim that U.N ‘created’ Israel which would then have emerged. But now its attempt was frustrated by the new State of Israel itself. (15) The occasion was provided in May 1949, when Israel applied for admission to the U.N (at the time this was great importance to the Israel leadership as a means of securing International recognition for the new state). The general Assembly took the position that it would admit Israel provided its government undertook to comply with the General Assembly resolution relating to the partition of Palestine and the Palestine refugees. This meant that Israel would confine itself to the territory assigned to the Jewish state in the U.N. Partition plan and would permit the refugees, if they wished, ‘to return to their homes to live at peace with their neighbor at the earliest practicable date’. In response Israel declared that it unreservedly accepts the obligations of the U.N. Charter and Undertakes to honor them from the day when it becomes a Member of the United Nations. The representative of the Israeli, stated in the General Assembly on April 13th 1949, that his government would pursue no policies on any question which were inconsistent with the resolution of the General Assembly and the Security Council. He was closely questioned in Ad Hoc Political committee and furnished explanations about his government’s intention regarding the two resolution. He stated: (a) That his government would be very careful not to make an extreme application of the provisions of the U.N Charter relating to domestic jurisdiction, if such an application would deprive General Assembly decisions of all compelling force. (b) That it would be a mistake for any of the governments concerned to take refugee, with regard to the refugee problem, in their legal right to exclude people from their territories. These explanations satisfied the Ad Hoc Political committee, and accordingly the General Assembly in its Resolution 273 of May 11, 1949, having recalled the two resolutions in question and having noted the declaration by the government of Israel and the explanations of its representative, decided to admit Israel to membership. (16) However, even while their application was under discussion in New York, the Israel leadership were saying in private that they would never withdraw to the partition lines and would do everything they could to prevent the return of the refugees. And as soon as they had secured admission to the United Nations, they went back on their undertakings to comply with the resolutions. Clearly, in the light of the above, it is misleading to speak of the U.N. having “created” Israel in the sense of the state of Israel as it eventually emerged and with any implication of International Sanction for the territorial boundaries and the displacement of population which resulted from the conflicts. Finally, in so far as the idea of the ‘creation of Israel’ by the U.N action has any validity at all, it is evident that precisely the same validity can be claimed for the Proposed Arab (Palestinian) state under the U.N. partition plan. Israelis and their supporters cannot claim U.N authority for the creation of Israel without at the sametime conceding the same authority for the establishment of the Palestinian state envisage in the partition resolution. The NSCIA had on Sunday asked every Muslim in the country to look for the new moon between Sunday and Monday for the Eid el-Fitri. The Secretary-General of the council, Is-haq Oloyede in a statement on Sunday, said the council, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, enjoined all to look for the moon. Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and a few other countries had earlier announced Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitri day in their various countries. Eid-el-Fitri celebrations are used to mark the end of the month-long Ramadan fast. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/206433-nscia-declares-wednesday-eid-el-fitri-day-nigeria.html |
Ramadan, a month of purification, a month rich in graces and a special month in all Muslim’s lives, the month during which the Holy Qur’an was revealed. Fasting was made obligatory for Muslims in the 2nd year of Hijra (623 AD) in accordance with the divine injunction in the Holy Qur’an, “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was for those before you, so that you may guard against evil”. The fight against the physical tendency of hunger assists the Muslim to achieve control over his nafs (inner self) to overcome his worldly desire and to give supremacy to his spirituality over worldly pursuit. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is observed as a month of fasting, a religious institution almost as universal as the prayer. In Islam fasting is one of the five fundamental practical ordinances as the other four being prayer, zakat (alms), pilgrimage and Jihad. Ramadan must be observed by every adult Muslim, except the sick, the infirm and pregnant women, or mothers who are nursing their children. Travelers are also exempted from fasting during the month of Ramadan. In the case of a sick person or traveler, the month’s fast must be kept as soon as they are able to perform it. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) has said, “fasting is an armor with which one protects oneself so let not him (who fasts) utter foul speech, nor let him act in an ignorant manner and if a man quarrel with him or abuse him, he should say twice “I am fasting”. The Prophet (S.A.W) also said, “He who does not give up uttering falsehood and acting according to it, Allah has no need of his giving up his food and drink”. The celebration of Ramadan this year by the Islamic world is occurring at a time when Muslims in many parts of the world are suffering many atrocities like in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, Libya, Palestine and some part of Nigeria, Chad, Mali, Niger and Cameroun. The Zionist state with its terrorist police has made a mockery of world science. The leaders in Muslim countries, however, have done little except to pay up service to support the Muslim cause. Ramadan offers the Muslims a golden opportunity to reform their shortcoming and to fight against the ignorance and to struggle to change the status quo. It was in the blessed month of Ramadan that Holy Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). The Holy Qur’an says, “The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur’an was revealed- a book of guidance to men with proofs of guidance distinguishing right from wrong”. It is a month of great blessing for the Muslims: Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said, “when Ramadan comes, the door of heaven are opened and the doors of hell are closed”. According to another saying of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) “God says he (the believer)give up his food and his drink and his (sexual) desire for my sake and is fasting me so I will grant its reward”. Fasting has innumerable social and health advantages. It teaches equality which is not witnessed even in prayers. A king may pray along side with a poor man in the mosque but at home he may lead quite a different life by eating food at will and enjoying other pleasure. Fasting, however, places all men, rich and poor, on the same. Pitiful plight of hunger and does not permit anybody to take food and drink or to have sexual relations during the day time. Fasting accustoms a man to face hardships of life and increases his power of resistance and teaches his moral disciple. A believer is enjoined to sleep less and devote himself to good deeds and worship during Ramadan. It removes pride because a hungry man find himself weak and this makes him modest. Modern study of science has proved that the value of fasting for preservation of good health is very great. Eating less is a key to good health as the doctors say. In western countries, people diet to keep their bodies fit as fasting keep both the body and the soul healthy. Fasting enkindles a spirit of kindness to poor and distressed and spurs believer to exert efforts to remove hunger and poverty in the world. Islamic calendar is based solely on the moon’s revolutions and a lunar month consists either of 29 or 30 days. Hence, the month of Ramadan rotates in every season and come back to its starting point during the course of nearly 29 to 30 years. The world today stands in chaos and disorder. Hardly a day passes by without the signs of the prevalent system falling apart. The only hope that we have is through the adoption of the strong and adhering ideology of Islam, embodied in the great disciplinary act of fasting. Fasting is an institution which has been practised by different people in different time and places. The Qur’an says “O, You Believers and Faithfuls, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you in order that you may develop piety (Taqwa)” (2.183). In modern times, fasting has taken the two extreme forms of either ritualism and hunger strike or dieting. But Islamic fasting is different in the sense that if it does not emanate from and lead to piety and Taqwa, it cannot be regarded as fasting. Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. It is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar. Ramadan is the month of obligatory fasting. From the first glimpse of the crescent moon of Ramadan to the end of the Lunar month, every day of the month from dawn till dusk, total abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse is enjoined. Because of the rotating pattern of the month of Ramadan may consider with the longest days of the year. Thus, the fasting of Ramadan can be very challenging, requiring considerable stamina, will power, which, leads to strong discipline restraint, self sacrifice, determination, commitment and continuous struggle against all forms of evils. Fasting of Ramadan involves a whole number of onerous physical and spiritual obligation as well as mental and moral restrictions. It discourages moral laxity, permissiveness and mental weakness. It is a severe task. One can readily believe that in the month of Ramadan in hot and long summer days towards the end of the day, the majority of the fasting faithful are reflecting on Islamic restrictions concerning physical lust, desire and even comfort. But these are exactly some of the reasons why fasting of Ramadan leads the faithful to moral strength and discipline, physical fitness and discipline, mental agility, social awareness and spiritual satisfaction and fulfillment. Finally, if the world’s hungry masses and starving people are to be fed, then there is a need for self sacrifice and self discipline by those who are in a position to cultivate those virtues. There are various aspects of Ramadan and fasting, some of which are as follows: (1) The revelation and recollection of the Qur’an. Ramadan is the month during which Muhammad (S.A.W) began to receive the Divine Revelation. The climax of this is the Night. The Qur’an says “We (God) have indeed reveal it (the Qur’an, the message) in the Night of Blessing, Mercy and Power (Lailat al-Qadr (97:1). The climax of Ramadan is also the night of blessing and mercy. (2) We can thus conclude that the second aspect of Ramadan is that the Night of Blessing and Mercy is in it. It has suggested that Lailat Qadr is alternatively the 21st, 23rd, 25th or the 27th night of Ramadan. (3) Ramadan is the month of repentance, penitence and atonement for it is the month of continuous physical and mental struggle to please Allah to worship Him and to obtain the state of piety, righteousness and Divine consciousness. The Prophet (S.A.W) has said that “it is a month whose beginning is mercy, whose middle is forgiveness and whose end is freedom from sin and fire (Hell)”. (4) It is the month of reconciliation, unity and solidarity amongst the faithful or they are the closet to the source of humanity in this month. It is the month of resolving quarrels, fostering closeness, and galvanizing the brotherhood of the Muslims. The Prophet (S.A.W) established brotherhood and fraternity amongst his followers and companions in this month after he was ordered to do so (Qur’an 49:10). This is why the Islamic Republic of Iran has proclaimed the last Friday of Ramadan as the day of Muslim solidarity and unity, day of Quds (Yaum al-Quds). It is the day of open challenge and war against all forms of aggression toward Islam and Muslims. (5) It is the month of caring, sharing, charity, help and understanding and assisting the poor and the needy. Fasting partly involves saving food to be able to give it to the hungry and the starving people of the world. Sacrificing a part of one’s wealth and food in the interest of the poor and the needy id one of the most important aspects of Ramadan and fasting. The payment of Zakat al fitra (religious tax) at the end of Ramadan has been made incumbent upon all Muslims. (6) It is the month of discipline and control, for fasting also implies control of one’s thoughts, actions, words, temper and infact of all kinds of things done by all the elements of which man is composed. The Prophet (S.A.W) has said “When you fast, let your ear fast, your eye and your tongue and your hand and every limb”. He also said “many anyone who fast get nothing from his/her fasting but hunger and thirst. (7) It is the month of continuous physical, spiritual and mental struggle against all forms of evils against inner as well as outer enemies of one’s self and one’s community and enemies of Islam and the Muslims. The Prophet (S.A.W) undertook one of the most crucial battle of his life on defence of Islam, namely by the “battle of Badr” in this month. Let us bear in mind that fasting is one aspect of that perpetual, conscientious, struggle (Jihad) spoken in the Qur’an, “And as far those who engage in the perpectual struggle for our cause, we surely guide them in our path. And certainly Allah is with those who practice (righteousenss)” (29:69). ( Ramadan is the month which lead to one of the most important festive days of the Muslim community, Eid al Firt. (9) It is the month in which the Prophet’s beloved wife, Khadija, and his uncle and protector Abu-Talib, the father of Ali, died and in which his grandson Hassan was born. (10) And last but not learnt, it is the month in which Khalifa Ali was injured and Martyred. He was wounded on 19th and achieved Martyrdom on 21st of Ramadan of the year 40(A.H).
