PoliticsBoko Haram: Theatre Command Lifts Suspension On UNICEF Activities by 247tops(op): 10:55am On Dec 15, 2018
Few hours after the military suspended UNICEF, the UN aid agency from the North East over allegations of spying for Boko Haram terrorists, the Theater Command of Operation Lafiya Dole has liftef the suspension. This disclosure was made on Friday night by Colonel Onyeama Nwachukwu, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations via a statement.

He said, “Sequel to intervention by well meaning and concerned Nigerians over the recent suspension of UNICEF operations in the North East theatre of operations, the Theatre Command Operation Lahiya Dole convened and held an emergency meeting with representatives of UNICEF this (Friday) evening.

During the meeting, the Theatre Command admonished the representatives of the organization to desist from activities inimical to Nigeria’s national security and capable of undermining ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency. “The Command also urged UNICEF representatives to ensure they share information with relevant authorities whenever induction or training of new staff is being conducted in the theatre. “Consequently, after extensive deliberations on the need to seek modalities to work harmoniously with the security agencies in the theatre of operation, the Theatre Command has henceforth lifted the three months suspension earlier imposed on UNICEF activities in North Eastern Nigeria.

CelebritiesMaiduguri People Are Fools - Badman Binladen by 247tops(op): 6:14pm On Aug 27, 2018
Sallah’s celebration is always accompanied with lots of excitement and fun as Muslim faithfuls utilize the two-day break to spend time with family and friends. The Northern region including Borno State was not left out as fun seekers were seen patronizing the various funfairs organised by different entrepreneurs. The city of Maiduguri was at its peak on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 August as top artistes entertained the vibrant audiences at the various venues. Among them was Haidari Aliyu popularly known as Badman Bin Laden.

So here is the gist:

According to Badman Bin Laden, he missed his flight to Maiduguri and decided to use road transport which unfortunately he couldn’t make it to the venue on time. The failure of Badman Binladen to perform at the funfair made the organisers to come up witha plan B which was to present a duplicate of Badman Binladen (a fast rising artiste in Maidcity). This was done with a view to confuse the audience who were getting upset. Unfortunately for the organisers, after few songs by the fake badman, the fans already knew this was a trick and immediately rushed to the stage and the fake badman had to be whisked away after getting just a bit of Yerwa boys. IslamThe Fuquha And Their Search For Divine Guidance By Baba Ali Mustapha by 247tops(op):
This research was almost the same, but more elaborate to the one posted on Friday 29 June, 2018 under the title “[url]FOUR IMAMS OF AHAL SUNNA WAL JA’MA A (THE SUNNI MUSLIMS)[https://www.nairaland.com/4589303/four-imams-ahalal-sunna-wal]”

The task of the Fuquha (theologians) is not an easy one. Anyone with merely intellectual knowledge cannot successfully become a faqih (theologian). The Holy Qur’an, the primary source of Islamic theology had laid down the comprehensive principles about the persons who are worth the task. It says:
“This is the Book of Allah: there is no doubt about it. It is guidance to God-fearing (Muttaji) people who believe in the unseen, establish prayer (salat) and spend in our way out of what we have bestowed on them, who believe in the book we have sent down to you and in the books sent down before you, and firmly believe in the hereafter. Such people are on the right from their Lord and as such are truly successful (Qur’an, Surah 2: verses 1-5).

The above Qur’anic verses make it abundantly clear that the guidance from the Holy Book and also the words of the Prophet can only be obtained if one firmly believes in the Book of Allah. That it is the revealed book beyond any shadow of doubt. The Holy Qur’an is not like the common book of philosophy and religion which are based on mere speculation and guesswork. The authors of such books are not free from doubts even while writing their books. But the Book of Allah is based on truth because its author is Allah Himself who possesses complete knowledge about the reality. The real Faqih who desire to understand the Qur’an should be a strong believer (Mumin) in Allah and His Messenger.

Secondly, he should be Muttaqi, a God-fearing righteous man who really discriminates in the right and wrong, good and evil. In other words, one who wants guidance from Divine Message should first be righteous and approach the Qur’an and the Hadith with right mental attitude to understand their deeper meaning.

The third condition laid down in the Qur’an is that the seekers of the truth should have firm believe in the unseen (believer in the Ghayb). Things which cannot be mere comprehended by sensul knowledge and which do not merely come from human experience and naked sense perception. For example, belief in God, angels, revelations, death, hereafter, paradise, hell, etc. can neither be seen, smelled, tested, touched or measured and weighed. The sources of our belief in the unseen are the Revealed books and Prophets of Allah from whom we receive this knowledge on trust just as we are very much used to take many things on trust in our day to day life in the physical world. Religion is a matter of faith, and it is faith in the alone that can help us in deriving proper guidance from the Qur’an and the Hadith.

The fourth condition for receiving proper guidance from the Qur’an and the Sunnah is that one should be able to put the teachings of Islam into practice. He should be willing and ready to do so. These teachings are many but the most important obligatory practice are salat (prayers), Saum (fasting), Zakat (poor rate), Hajj (pilgrimage), etc. the Prophet’s tradition mentioned salat as a distinguishing factor between a believer and an unbeliever and the practical proof and permanent test of the sincerity of one’s faith.

The fifth condition for receiving Divine Guidance is that one should have firm belief in the Divine Revelation since the Qur’an guides only those who believe that Divine Guidance is essential for right living and that it is not revealed to everyone individually but to the Messengers of Allah and it can only be obtained from the Books revealed to them.

The Fuquha (theologians or Jurist) of the early history of Islam were honest and sincere believers in the teachings of Allah and fulfilled the above conditions while searching for proper guidance not only for themselves but for the understanding of a common believer. With Divine Grace, they gained mastery of the Qur’an and the Hadith and made it easy for every Muslim to fashion his everyday affairs according to requirement of the Shariah. One cannot expect the attainments of an ordinary believer to reach an extend that one may be able to give a correct and authentic interpretation to the Qur’an and the Sunnah. There are number of such specialized doctors of religion who applied themselves to the task but the following four leaders (Aimma) and their school of Fiqh are followed by Muslims throughout the world.

1. IMAM ABU HANIFA
Abu Hanifa Numan, the son of Thabit was born at Basra in the year 80 A.H/699 AD. In his early life, he lived in Kufa as a manufacturer and merchant of kind of silk material. From his early childhood he was marked as an intelligent person and was known for his piety. He was a student of Hammad Bin Abi Sulayman (d.120 A.H) who taught theology in Kufa. He also learnt from Ata bin Abi Rabah in Mecca, and a number of other well known scholars at that time. When his teacher Hammad died, Abu Hanifa became the foremost authority on questions of religious law in Kufa. A large number of students were attracted by him from different part of Muslim world who came to learn Faqih from him.

Al-Mansur (136 A.H/754 AD) the Abbasid Caliph invited him to come to Baghdad, the newly founded capital. He offered him the important post of Qadi (Judge) but the Imam refused the offer. As a result, Mansur ordered him to be thrown into prison. He became a victim of persecution so much so that he was flogged in order to make him accept the post of the Qadi when all his efforts failed. At last he died in prison in Baghdad in 150 A.H/767 AD at the age of seventy. He is buried at the same place which is known as Azamiyya a given after the Imam’s epithet “Al Imam al-Azam”

Abu Hanifa was a great theologian whose school of thought of Islamic theology is known as the Hanifite School. He played the role of theoretical systematizer who achieved a great success in technical legal thought. Since he had not accepted any position under the Khalifa, he was free to give legal decisions without any fear or favour. Imam Abu Hanifa legal thought showed a high degree of reasoning. He used his personal judgement (Ra’y) and conclusion by analogy (Qiyas) to the extend customary in the schools of Islamic law of that time. He avoided extremes and relied on scriptural rather than on rational proofs. He is known in the Hanafite world as Imam al Azam, the Great Imam.

His well known works are Al-Alim and Muta’allim (The Teacher and the Pupil) famous Wasiya addressed to his disciple Yusuf bin Khalid al Sumtial Basri. He was one of the most vigorous personalities of Islam which he has profoundly influenced in its historical development. There are approximately 500 million followers of the Hanafi school of Fiqh in the world mostly concentrated in India, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, Indo-China, China and former Soviet Russia.

2. IMAM MALIK BIN ANAS
Imam Malik’s full name was Abu Abdullah Malik bin Anas. He was born at Medina in the year 93 A.H/713 AD. He spent most of his life at Medina. He studied Fiqh with the celebrated Rabi’a bin Farrukh (d. 133 A.H) and large number of other scholars and divines. It is said he studied under about 900 teachers out of whom 300 people were Tabi’un, the successors of the Sahaba, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad. Al-Suyuti has given a list of 95 Sheyhkh (the learned scholars) from whom he transmitted traditions.

Within a short period of time, his reputation as an eminent Faqih (theologian) spread far and wide. In 145 AH, he gave a Fatawa (religious decision) that homage paid the Abbasid Caliph AL-Mansur was not binding because it was given under compulsion. He was a fearless man like Abu Hanifa and any religious decision without any fear or favour. Inspite of all this, he was held in such a high esteem by the Caliphs that Al-Mahdi sought his advice when he wanted to make structural alteration in the Ka’aba sanctuary. In 179 A.H, the famous Caliph Haruna al-Rashid visited him on the occasion of his pilgrimage.

Imam Malim died in the year 179 A.H at Medina after a short illness at the age of 85. He was buried in Al-Baqi and his funeral prayer were led by Abdullah bin Zubairu, the governor there.

Imam Malik was a great theologian and his system of jurisprudence and law was based on entirely on the Ahadith (traditions). He was scrupulously careful in given judgement. Whenever he had the least doubt as to the correctness of his decision, he would say “I do not know” Imam Malik’s great work is the Kitab al-muwatta which is the earliest surviving law book. Its object to give a survey of law and justice, ritual and practice of religion of Islam according to Ijima, consensus of opinion of the learned men in religion of that time.

The Maliki school of Islamic law was founded by Imam Malik bin Anas. It prevails over most of Muslim Africa, with the exception of Lower Egypt, the horn of Africa and the East coast.

There are about 70 million followers of the Maliki school of Fiqh in the world.

3. IMAM AL- SHAFI’I
Imam al-Shafi’i’s full name was Muhammad Ibn Idrissa al- Shafi’i. He was born at Askolan in Palestine in the year 150 A.H/767 AD. He came from the Quraish tribe, the tribe of the Holy Prophet. This is why he is referred to as Imam al-Muttalabi because of his descent from the Prophet’s grandfather Abdul Muttalib.

It is said that al- Shafi’i was endowed with extraordinary talents right from his childhood. His biographers say that his memory was so sharp that at seven years of age, he learnt the whole Qur’an by heart. At the age of ten he had committed to memory the Muwatta of Imam Malik bin Anas, and at fifteen he had obtained the rank of Mufti.

Imam Shafi’i spent the early years of his life at Gaza in Palestine where he acquired his education and then he proceeded to Mecca. Then he went to Baghdad in 195 A.H. where he gave lectures on the science of Hadith and composed his first work entitled al-Usul. From there, al- Shafi’i went to Mecca for the Hajj and from there proceeded to Egypt where he met Imam Malik bin Anas. Al Shafi’i remained for the rest of his life in Egypt where he busied himself in the practice of religion, educating the ignorant and writing his books on the Fiqh. The Imam died in Cairo in the year 240 A.H/854 A.D and was buried there. Later Salahal din founded a college for the preservation of al- Shafi’i’s works and the propagation of his doctrines and theology.

The greatest contribution of Imam al- Shafi’i is that he was the first who reduced the science jurisprudence into a regular system and made a systematic collection of traditions. His illustrious pupil, Imam Ahad bin Hanbal said; :”until the time of al- Shafi’i men did not know how to distinguish between the traditions that were in force and those that were canceled”.

The most famous works of al- Shafi’i l are his usul (i.e. fundamentals) containing all the principles of the civil and canon laws, the Musnad and Sunna both of which are in the traditional law.

The followers of the Shafil school of Islamic theology are approximately 170 million and concentrated mainly in Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Malaysia and Indonesia.

4. IMAM AHMAD BIN HANBAL
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal was born in the month of Rabi-al-Akhar in the year 164 A.H./780 AD. His father, Muhammad bin Hanbal was serving in the army of Khurasah and died at Baghdad when Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal was only three years old. He studied jurisprudence, Hadith and lexicography at Baghdad and in 179 A.H/795 AD, he devoted himself completely to the study of the Hadith. In this connection he made journeys to Iraq, Hijaz, Yemen and Syria. Two of his teachers were most outstanding: Yazid bin Harun and Yahya bin Said. When Imam al Shafi’i visited Baghdad (in 195 A.H) Ibn Hanbal attended his lectures and got instructions form him on the Hadith. As time passed, his reputation as a great theologian spread far and wide as he was distinguished for his profound knowledge of both civil and spiritual law. He became especially famous for the extent of erudition with respect to the precept of the Prophet. It is said that he could repeat about a million traditions.

It was during his life that the dispute concerning the Qur’an whether it was created or it existed from eternity began and the ruling Caliph Mustasim-Billah of the Abbasid dynasty (218 A.H./833 AD) was of the opinion that it was created. Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal opposed this view and as a result, he was imprisoned and severely scourged by the Caliph’s order. Later, the Caliph Mutawakkil, son of Mutasim issued a decree of general toleration leaving everybody to judge for himself. Imam Hanbal was freed from prison and was received by the Caliph in his court with great honour and offered him a generous present of 1,000 pieces of gold which the Imam refused to accept.

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal wrote a famous book named Musnad of Imam Hanbal which contains 30,000 Ahadith (traditions) collected from 750,000 traditions. A lager number of pupils gathered round him to study hadith and Fiqh. Two of his pupils are very famous, Ismail al-Bukhari and Muslim bin Daud.

After attaining the rank of Imam, he retired and led a solitary life for several years and devoted his time in the service of God. He died in 241 AH/855 AD at the age of 75. It is said that his funeral was attended by 800,000 men and 60,000 women. On the day of his death 20,000 Jews and Christians are said to have accepted Islam.

At present, there are about 5,000,000 followers of Hanbali School of Islamic theology founded by Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal mainly concentrated in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Syria.

PoliticsThe Pioneers Of Nigerian Nationshood By Baba Ali Mustapha by 247tops(op): 2:32pm On Jul 21, 2018
The Emergence of Political Organisations in Nigeria

The 19th century did not witness the emergence of any political party which could serve as a vehicle for airing grievances and expressing the aspiration of Nigerians continuously. By 20th century the fact of the British presence had been brought home so forcibly to the people by various military expedition sent out to conquer groups resisting the imposition of British rule and by the introduction of a number of measures-water rate, land appropriation and capitation tax to mention but a few-what it was felt that the old political method practiced in Lagos of public meeting and sending petitions to governors became inadequate and the political organisations began to make their appearance. The first of such organisations was the peoples union formed by Dr. Obasa and Randle specifically to agitate against the water rate but generally to champion the interests of the people of Lagos. This body became popular almost immediately and attracted members from all sections of the community-educated Africans, Chiefs and Muslim leaders. Its failure, however to prevent the imposition of water rate in 1916 considerably reduced its popularity. The organization was also handicapped by constant disagreement and bickerings among its leaders. With the emergence of the National Council of British West Africa (NCBWA) in 1920 and the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) in 1923, the organization lost the majority of its supporters and by 1926 it has completely ceased to exist.

Two years after the formation of the people’s union another organization – The Lagos Ancillary of the Aborigines Right Profession Society (LAAPRS) made its appearance. Though this, a humanitarian body it is nevertheless relevant to our discussion because in a colony it is difficult to draw a clear line of demarcation between political issues and humanitarian questions. The organization ostensibly came into existence to champion the interest of Nigerians generally, but its attention was taken up by the agitation over the land question. In 1912 fear was greatly entertained that the land system in Northern Nigeria whereby all land was taken over by the administration and held in trust for the people would be introduced into the south. Educated Africans were convinced that this would be the first step toward depriving Nigerians for their land. They believed that if they succeed in preventing the system from being extended to the south, the battle for its destruction in the North could then be succeeded waged. The movement like the peoples union attracted important personalities in Lagos amongst its members were Bishop James Johnson, Mojola Agbebi, C.A. Sapara-Williams, J. Da-Rocha Cardoso, A. Alakija and J.P. Jakson, the editor of the Lagos Weekly. Record it organized a deputation to London to present its views on land question to the British Government. The delegation was discredited by the quarrels which broke out among its member over the delegation fund. There were accusations of embezzlement against some of the members of the delegation. The organization did not survive for long.

It can be seen that the two organisations established before 1914 were not very effective. Moreover, they came into existence to champion specific causes. They did not possess effective organization or/an ideology. They therefore depended for their existence not on programmes but on personalities. This, in fact was the major reason for their ineffectiveness. However, with the outbreak of war and the political awareness generated by it, a number of organization which were more dynamic came into existence. They were: The Lagos Branch of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the NCBWA and the NNDP.

Universal Negro Improvement Association
In 1920, a branch of Garvey’s Universal Negro improvement association was formed in Lagos as a result of the initiative with anxiety by the Colonial office because of the belief that Garvey’s movement was a subversive one. Garvey had attracted the attention of British government during the World Negro Convention in New York in 1920 he sent a message of support to the Irish Leader, De Valera. Moreover, his journal, the Negro World was considered to subversive that it was banned not only in Nigeria but throughout West Africa by both the British and the French Governments. The Lagos branch did not survive long owing to the hostility of fellow Nigerian members of the NCBWA and the colonial administration. But during its short span of life it served as an inspiration to men like Ernest Sessi Ikoli, its first secretary, and Nnamdi Azikiwe who was to play leading roles in the Nationalist movement from the thirties. Azikiwe writing about the influence of the Negro world on him stated that the motto of Garveyism “One God, One Aim, One Destiny” appealed to him.

Nationalism: The Early Years:
British rule was disliked by many Nigerians. We shall see this in this research that many ordinary people disliked the changes brought about by the colonial government. The more educated people wanted to play a bigger part in the government of the country. There were many examples, therefore of both the educated people and the masses protesting against colonial rule. In time, these groups were to combine to form what was called the nationalist movement which eventually resulted in the independence of Nigeria in 1960.

Peasant Revolt
In the early years of colonial rule there were many local uprisings throughout Nigeria. In those, people protested against taxation, forced labour on roads and railways, and the destruction of their traditional way of life.

Nationalism Among the Elite
It was seen that the educated people in Lagos resented the fact that they were not allowed to play a part in the government. At first they did not try to get rid of colonialism as a whole. They concentrated on particular grievances. It should also be remembered that both they and the traditional rules were very loyal to British during the first and second world wars and they contributed money to Britain’s war efforts.

The National Congress of British West Africa (NCBWA)
The body was founded by a lawyer from Gold Coast (Ghana) in 1920. Its members came from the four British colonies in West Africa namely; Nigeria, The Gold Coast, Sierra-Leone and the Gambia. They all wanted more power. The congress argued for the following points:
-They wanted half the members of the legislative councils to be elected Africans. (There was a legislative council in each of the colonies, these council issued laws but were dominated by British Councils)
- The elected members of the councils legislative council should control financial affairs.
- There should be a West African University. There should be no discrimination against Africans in the civil service.
In 1920, the congress sent delegation to Britain to argue their cases with British government.

Herbert Macaulay
Herbert Macaulay was a member of Lagos elite. He was particularly concerned with the politics of Lagos.
In 1922, probably partly as a result of the work done by the National Congress of British West Africa, the British introduced a new constitution in Nigeria. Four of the forty-six members of the legislative were to be elected, three from Lagos and one from Calabar. Macaulay could not be elected himself because he had been imprisoned. But he formed a political party called the Nigerian Nationalist Democratic Party. This won all the Lagos seats in elections held in 1923, 1928 and 1933. It was very much a Lagos party. This affected the attitude of its members, they wanted self-government for cities and they wanted to change the system of indirect rule, whereby the educated were kept out of local government and out of most of the country’s law courts.

The Nigerian Youth Movement
This was started in 1934 to protest against the faults of the Yaba Higher College. At first it was called the Lagos Youth Movement but was renamed in 1936. It was founded by a Yoruba Doctor, J.C. Vaughan. After his death, the leader was Samuel Akinsaya and then Ernerst Ikoli.
Unlike the Nigerian National Democratic Party, the N.Y.M tried to be a national movement. It wanted a united and independent Nigeria, and compulsory and free education for all. It also wanted every adult to be able to vote in election and equal opportunities for Nigerians in the civil service. The N.Y.M defeated Macaulay’s party in 1938 but it achieved little and came to an end in 1941 mainly because of internal divisions.

Nnamdi Azikiwe
Azikiwe was an Onitsha Igbo who had managed to go to the U.S.A, for a higher education. Despite great financial hardship he obtained two Masters Degree and many credit for a doctorate and taught in an American University. When he came back to Nigeria he found that the colonial government could not offer him any suitable employment.

He spent three years as a journalist in Gold Coast (Ghana) and then returned to Nigeria in 1937. He started the Newspaper called The West African Pilot. Through the Newspaper, he could criticize the government and he could speak to a large number of Nigerians. Azikiwe joined the NYM before he returned to Nigeria. In 1934, Nigerian Politics was a Lagos affair with frequent brickbats between Macaulay and contemporaries. Zik’s writing were lucid, pungent and poisonous and he knew in politics there were no permanent friends or enemies but only permanent interests. Zik knew the virtue of retreat and strategic seasonal romance and this made him to stay for about half a century at the epicenter of Nigerian politics. The impact of Zik to Nigeria is in two fold:
i. He introduced activisim into Nigerian politics and took politics away from Lagos.
ii. He was the founder of Igbo Nationalism and through him his kinsmen got involved into politics and business which had been the preserve of the Lagos-elite, mostly Yoruba and Brasilians. His publication include: Liberia in World Politics, 1934; Renascent Africa, 1937; The African in Ancient and Mediaeval History, 1938; Land Tenure in Northern Nigeria in 1942; Political Blue Print in Nigeria 1943; Economic Reconstruction of Nigeria, 1943; Economic Rehabilitation of Eastern Nigeria 1955; Dialogue on a New Capital for Nigeria, 1974; Treasury of West African Poetry, etc”

Nationalism: The Later Years
In the period looked at the previous units, both the Britain and the educated Nigerians taught that colonial rule was going to last for many years. Infact, it was realized after the second world war and only the fifteen years from 1945 to 1960 saw rapid progress towards independence. The reason to this change in attitude can be found both within and outside Nigeria.

International Reasons
The second world war fought from 1939 to 1945 greatly weakened the colonial powers. France was invaded and conquered by the Germans and the French were divided into two bitterly hostile groups. Britain was also defeated by the Germans at one stage and although the British won in the end, the long years of war meant that their economy was badly weakened. This meant that the British found it more difficult to control their colonies.

Many Africans fought abroad, either for the British or for the French. They realized that the British were not the superior beings they had seemed to be. Nigerians fought alongside ordinary British dustmen, taxi drivers, farmed labourers and criminals.
Germany was attempting to dominate Europe. The fight against that country therefore was for freedom and for the right of all people to govern themselves. It was not surprising that the African colonies felt they have the same right.
In 1947, India which for a long time had been part of the British Empire obtained its independence. There was no reason why Nigerians should not be independent as well.

Internal Reasons
Nigerian nationalism developed into much more radical movement which now sought independence.
N.C.N.C
The National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons was formed in 1944. Its president was Herbert Macaulay until he died in 1946, but the party was dominated by Azikiwe. The party included many groups of people, various societies, ethnic unions and trade unions. Azikiwe became a popular hero in the 1940s, particularly among the Igbos. All those Nigerians who could read his newspapers, whether Clerks, Urban workers, traders or teachers, were delighted by his attack on the colonial government.

Obafemi Awolowo
Awolowo was an Ijebu Yoruba who was born in 1909. He had been active in NYM. Like Azikiwe had managed to study abroad, despite great difficulties. He studied law in London, and there he founded a Yoruba cultural organization in 1945 called the Egbe Omo Oduduwa. He opposed Azikiwe resolutely.

The years of Conflict
In 1947, new constitution was put into effect in Nigeria by Sir Arthur Richards, the governor. The constitution was intended to satisfy the demands of the nationalists. The Richards Constitution was opposed because of the following reasons:
- The nationalists has not been consulted
- Out of forty-four seats on the legislative council only four were directly elected;
- Traditional rulers who were unlikely to oppose the colonial government were given powerful place in the legislative council.

One further aspect of the constitution was that it divided Nigeria into three regions; North, East and West.
In 1945, there was general strike which railways, postal and government technical workers took part. They were protesting that the government had not raised their wages despite raising price. Azikiwe supported them in his newspapers.
The NCNC sent a delegation to England to protest about the Richard’s constitution but it achieved little. Its members became involved in squabbles about use of funds and the party became inactive for a while.

A new and more radical movement started. This was called Zikism. At first this was the youth wing of the NCNC but in 1948 when the NCNC was inactive, the Zikists attacked the government strongly. In 1949 the coal miners of Enugu went on strike. A British officer ordered the police to fire them. Twenty miners died, and twenty nine were wounded. This made all Nigerian workers, and more educated people very angry. The Zikists organized riots and called on Nigerians to reject colonial rule. The colonial government imprisoned the Zikist leaders and the movement became weakened and less important.

Finally, the research was based on work of Dr. M.I. Ijomah of Abia State University (Nigeria), I am deeply indebted to him.

IslamThe Four Imams Of Ahalal Sunna Wal Ja’ma’a (the Sunni Muslims) By Baba Ali Musta by 247tops(op):
THE FOUR IMAMS OF AHALAL SUNNA WAL JA’MA’A (THE SUNNI MUSLIMS)
BY
BABA ALI MUSTAPHA

I shall describe the character and conduct of the early Faqih. They had no other object except to gain the pleasure of Lord and the signs of the Learned men of hereafter were known to them from their conditions. They lived not only for the science of Fiqih, but also for the science of heart. The companions did not publish book on Fiqih or read them. We shall narrate the lives of some noted Faqihs not to attack them but to attack those who claim to be their followers. Act contrary to their character and conduct. The noted Faqihs are four – Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam Shafeyi and Imam Ahmaid-Bn Hambal. Everyone of them was an ascetic, devout, learned in the science of the hereafter, law giver for the people, seeker of God’s pleasure through the help of Fiqih. Everyone of them possessed five qualities, but the modern Faqihs accepted only one of those qualities. That is research into the minuted details of Fiqih. The four other qualities relate to the good of the hereafter and only one relate to the good of this world. They are followed only in respect of one quality and not the other four.

IMAM ABU HANIFAH (RA) (D.158 A.H)
He is Abu Hanifah Nu’man bin Thabit al-Kufy (RTA). He is the founder of Hanafite school of Islamic Jurisprudence. He belonged to that pious period of the Tabium the successor of the Sahabah (the companions of the Prophet) and had the good fortune of witnessing the period in which some Sahabah lived till his early youth.

He was a great Imam and a great ascetic and God-fearing man. He sought God’s pleasure by his knowledge. Ibn Mobarak said that Imam Hanifa had good character and conduct and observed prayer and fasted too much. Hammad-b-Salaiman said that he was in the habit of praying the whole night and in another narration half the night. Once Abu Hanifa was walking in a street when the people hinted at him saying: This man spend the whole night in prayer. He said: I am ashamed before God that I am described by something which I don’t possess. Regarding his asceticism, Rabiy bin Asem said: Caliph Yezid sent me once to Abu Hanifa and he wanted to appoint him as cashier of the state treasury. On his refusal to accept the post, he was given twenty stripes. Now see how he fled away from a prize post and as a result received punishment. Hakim bin Hashim said: I hear about Abu Hanifa at Syria that he was the most trusted man for which the Caliph wanted him to appoint as a treasurer of state treasury and threated him with punishment if he would not accept it. He preferred King’s punishment to that of God.
Ibnul Mobarak narrated about Abu Hanifa: Do you say of the man who was given the treasures of the world but who fled away from them? Muhammad bin Shuja narrated: Caliph Adal Mansur ordered 10,000 dirhams to be given to the Imam but he declined the offer. On the day when the wealth would be delivered to him, he covered his body with a cloth after prayer and did not talk with anybody. The man of the caliph went to him with Dirhams but the Imam did not talk with him. One of the people present said: This is his habit. Put it in a corner of his room. This was done. Thereafter, Abu Hanifa left death instruction with the regard to his wealth and said to his son: When I die and you finish my burial, take this purse to the Caliph and tell him: This is your trust which you have deposited with Abu Hanifa. His son said: I did accordingly. The Caliph said: May God have mercy on your father.

It is narrated that he was once offered the post of the Chief Justice of the state; but he said: I am not fit for the post. When he was asked about the reason, he said: If I have told the truth, it good for the post: if I told a lie, I am unfit for that post as I am a liar.
Abu Hanifa’s knowledge at the things of hereafter and his concern over the important matters of religion are proved by the following narration, Ibn Juray said: I was informed that Abu Hanifa used to spend long time in silence and meditation and converse little with the people. Those actions prove his exoteric knowledge. He who has been given silent and asceticism has been given all knowledge.

IMAM MALIK BN ANAS (RA) (D. 179AH)
One of the prominent Islamic jurist was the Imam of Darul-Hijrah (the city of Madinah al-Munawarah), Abu Abdullah, Malik bin Anas bin Malik al-Madni (R.T.A). He is the founder of Malikite School of Islamic Jurisprudence.
He was adorned with five qualities once he was asked: O Malik, what do you say about search for knowledge? He replied: It is fair and beautiful. If anybody does not separate from you morning and evening, don’t separate from him. When the Imam intended to narrate tradition, he used to make ablution, sit in the middle of his bed, comb his beard, apply scent, and then became fearful and grave and then narrate tradition. When asked about those formalities, he said: I intend to show honour of the traditions of the Prophet. He said: knowledge is light. God place it wherever He wishes. Regarding the seeking of pleasure of God by knowledge, he said: There is no benefit in argument about religion. This proved by saying of Imam Shafiyi who said: Once I was near Malik, he was asked about forty-eight legal questions: He replied regarding thirty-two questions: I don’t know. When the learned were mentioned, Imam Malik was counted as a bright star. It is said that once the Caliph Mansur prohibited him to narrate the particular tradition on the illegality of divorce made under compulsion. The Caliph thereafter instigated someone to question the Imam on the subject. He declared among the people that divorce pronounced under compulsion is not binding. For this, the Caliph had him flogged.

The Caliph Harun Rashid once asked Imam Malik: Have you got any house? He said: No, the Caliph then gave him 3,000 dinars and said go and buy with this money a house. The Imam accepted the money but did not spend it for the purpose. When the Caliph intended to return to Baghdad he asked Malik; you should come along with us, because we have decided to make the people follow “Muatta” as Usman made them follow the Quran. Malik said: This is not the way to make the people follow “Muatta” because the companions of the Prophet after his death dispersed around the different countries and they related their tradition in each place. Further the Prophet said: Difference of opinion among the people is a blessing. As for my going with you, there is no way as the Prophet said: Had they known, they would have known that Medina is best for them. Again he said: Medina removes the corruption just as the furnace removes the dross of iron. Therefore here are your dinars. If you like, you may have them. Does this mean that you asked me to leave Medina in return for what you have given me? I prefer nothing more than the city of the Messenger of God, not even the whole world.

Such was the asceticism of Malik. When as a result of diffusion of knowledge and the spreading of his companions large wealth began to come to him from different corners of the earth, he used to distribute them in charity. Such as ascetic was Solomon despite his royalty glory. Another example of his asceticism is that Imam Shafeyi once said: I notice a number of Korasani horses at the door of Malik. I have never seen any other horse better than them. I said to Malik: How beautiful are they! He said: There are then present from me to you. I said: to him; keep one of them for yourself for riding. He said: I shall be ashamed before God to tread with the hoof of any beast of burden the soil where in lies His Prophet. See therefore his benevolence and his veneration for the soil of Madina.

There is yet another report of his asceticism, he said: I once went to Caliph Haruna Rashid. He asked Malik: O Abu Abdullah, you should come frequently to my place, so that u may learn from you “Muatta”. He said: May God exalt my Master, this knowledge has come from you. If you honour it, it will be exalted, and if you dishonor it, it will be despited. Knowledge is something you shall learn and not something you should receive. Then the Caliph said, you are right. He said to his son, good out to the Mosque and acquire from knowledge alone with the people.

IMAM SHAFIL (RA) (D.204 AH)
One of those humble servant of Allah (SWT) is the Imam (leader) of the Jurist, establisher of Sunna, Muhammad bin Idris as-Shafiyu al-Quraish (RTA). He is the founder of Shafite School of Islamic Jurisprudence.

He was a devout worshipper. Abu Bakr Ibn Abu Tahir (R.A) related that, Imam Shafil (RA) used to divide his night hours into three segments. The first hours for sleeping. The second hours for writing of Islamic theological books and the third hours for Salat. The narrator said that Imam Shafiyi used to finish the Quran 60 times in the month of Ramadan and every time he finished it is in prayer. Hussen Qarabasi reported: I spend many nights with the great Imam. He used to spend one-third of the night in prayer and yet I have not seen him reciting more than fifty to one hundred verses. At the end of each verse, he would beseech God’s mercy upon himself and upon all Muslims. The Imam said: I used not to take food with satisfaction for the last 16 years as a full stomach make the body heavy, make the heart hard, increases sleep and render a man lazy. For worship, he also said: Never have I taken Oath by God whether true or false. He said: He who claims that the love of world and love of God are united in him is a liar. Humaidi said: Imam Shafiyi once went to Yemen with some men and returned to Mecca with 10,000 dirhams. A tent was fixed for him in the outskirts of Mecca and people began to come to him. He did not move from that place till he distributed all the dirhams among the people.

Generosity of Imam was great and the root of asceticism is generosity. Whoever love a thing keeps it with him and everything is insignificant to one whom the world is insignificant. This is asceticism which led to God-fear. Once Sufiyan bin Aynabat fell in swoom before the Imam. He was told that he had expired. He said: if he has died the best man of his time has died. Omar bin Nabatah said: I have not found more God fearing man than Imam Shafiyi. I, he said, Haris bin Labeed went one day to the valley of Safa. Hardis had a student with him and he was a Qari or reader of the Quran. He had a sweet voice and began to read: This is a day on which they will not speak and they will not be given permission to raise excuse Q77.35. I saw that the colour of the face of the Imam changed and he was trembling vehemently and then fell in swoom. When he recovered, he began to say: O God, I seek refuge to Thee from the place of the liars and scoffing of the heedless. O God, the hearts of a gnostic have submitted and the next of those who yearn for thee bowed. O Worshipped, bestow Thy bounty upon me and cover me with Thy Mercy. Forgive my faults through the grace of Thy countenance. He then along with us left the place. When I reached Baghdad, he was then in Iraq. I was making ablution on the bank of the river for prayer. A man then was passing by me and said: O young man, make well, God will then treat good with you both in this world and in the next, I followed him. He looked at me and said: Have you got any necessity? I said: Teach me something at what God has taught you. He said: know what he who knows God as true get salvation and he who fears His religion, remains safe from destruction. He who remains in different from the world, will be cool at seeing the rewards which God will give him tomorrow. Shall I give you more advice? I said: Yes, he said: The faith of one who has got three characteristics is perfect,:

(1) to enjoin good to act according to it
(2) to prohibit evil and desist from it and
(3) to guard the limit of God.
Shall I give you more advice? I said yes: he said: Adopt asceticism in the world, entertain hopes for the next world and believe God in all your affairs, you will then be among those who will get salvation. Then he went away. I asked: Who is he? They said Imam Shafeyi. Such fear and asceticism are the result of nothing but for his knowledge of God and not for his knowledge of question like advance payment, loans, wages, etc as are embodied in Fiqih.

Imam Shafeyi said: The knowledge of one who does not make himself perfect will come of no use to him. He also said: Who so confesses his obedience to God through the help of his knowledge, his heart becomes illumined. He also said: everyone has got some person who love him and some who hate him. If it be so, be among those who obey God.

Abdul Qader-Abdul Aziz was a God fearing man. He once asked Imam Shafeyi; which of those virtues is better- patience, trial and peace of mind (Tamkin)? The Imam replied, peace of mind is the rank of the Prophets and it is not attained except and by patience come after trial. Don’t you see what examined Abraham and then He gave him peace of mind? He examined Solomon and then gave him peace of mind and kingdom. He did the same to Moses, Job, Joseph and others. This reveals the deep knowledge of Imam Shafeyi about the Quran. Sifyan Saori said: I or anybody has not seen like Shafeyi.

IMAM AHMAD BN HANBAL (RA) (D.241 A.H)

He is Imam Ahmad bn Muhammad bn Hanbal as-Shaebani (RTA) one of the four Imams of Islamic Ummah. His son Abdullah bn Hanbal (RA) related that his father used to observe three hundred raka’h (genuflexion) everyday and night and when he was sick he then reduced it to one hundred and fifty raka’ah (geneflexion), he was during this time about eighty years of age.

Aimam Ahmed bn Hambal had many followers. Nevertheless, he known for asceticism and God-fearing. All books contain his sayings and stories of his asceticism.

Now examine the lives of the Imams and scrutinize those who claim to be their followers. Did the Imams rise to such eminence only for their knowledge of Fiqih which now means contracts of the type of Salam, hire, rental, lease and worldly laws?
