How do you react when you have a young child that steals? You've talked to him/her several times, told him/her everything that has to be said about the consequences of pilfering. You do ALL you can to provide his needs and wants. But he keeps 'doing it'. How do you help or stop such a child? A reader sent this in yesterday:

Hello,

My son steals from me, my husband, my mother, his grandparents, his friends, everybody!! Please, let's discuss this here because I'm sure I'm not the only mother having this problem. If it's not money, it's things as small as tiny toys and games from neighbors. Sincerely, it's gotten so bad I don't know what to do with him anymore. My husband and I now have locks on our bedroom door to keep him out.

Problem started when he was 11 and got into boarding school. He is 13 now. I've threatened him that next time he steals, I would have the police involved. Of course I don't want to or plan to do that but I don't know what else to do.

First I really detest boarding school, why would I give birth to a child if I can't monitor the child's daily progress. I could recall a story of an old school mate of mine who her parent withdrew from a boarding school because of all manner of nasty things their female seniors make them do.

My advice is parents monitor the daily progress of your kids and stop leaving them in the hands of some teachers who gat their worries too

They should take the kid to a certified child Chancellor asap

it started before age 11. The mom only noticed when he was 11

Because it must have been since primary school where he steals Pencil, biros, etc. as the mom you should have noticed your son with more than one Pencil of which you can identify the one you bought for him. You should be very observant with the slightest things with kids. Taking the small things like balloon that doesn't belong to you deserves severe punishment.

Child upbringing is really hard especially when they grow up to become teenagers. Only God can help raise a child. I really feel for the mother, don't neglect the place of prayer and always advice the child, provide him with what you can afford that he needs. Some little children even steals to provide themselves with what they need.

Imagine an eight year old kid that forgot his pen at home and is fully aware of the punishment that comes from the teacher for coming to school without a pen. The next thinking that might spring up in his head may be to take that of his classmate to avoid been beaten. At the end of the day he would most likely not return the stolen pen.

May God change that little boy sad

My reccimendations:
1. Deliverance
2. Deliverance
3. Deliverance

This has gone past your power as it could be a spiritual issue.

Don't you know bad communication corrupt the mind most especially at that teenage age in which their gulibity high. The fact is that you can never know exactly what is going on in those kids hostel, cause the innocent faces they wear is highly deceptive.

As for me I will monitor the daily progress of my kids, so I could checkmate where their strength and weakness lies.

1. You should not have allowed him to go boarding since he started before going. I understand you might think he will stop if he boards but most children adopts habits they didn't do at home in boarding house and aggravate the ones they did at home in boarding.
2. I advice you go spiritual. Consult your pastor or imam. Since he only steals items and a combination of money and items his case is peculiar, thus I suggest you go spiritual.

Mind you, I hope none of the parents was also a kleptomania during teenager. The habit inherited by child from parent is more impacting than thought.

Train up a child in the right way he should grow so that when he grows he will not depart from it. He is a little older now, only God can help.

U are very correct but when u assign ur child under a good teacher who report to u on daily basis and more especially u v to be a bestfriend to ur child not just a parent so he/she can open up to then u v played ur part cos even in day school there are bad companies

Very bad trait oooo.I pray it ain't genetic.
stealing is a bad habit that may stop with time.Itime.I use to steal, from candies to little coins. When it's a problem is when he/she continues to steal even when there's no need to, or going outside the home to steal.I suggest corporal punishment and a close watch on kinds of friends he/she keeps.

Boarding school is not really the problem here. I am speaking out of experience. I was once a boarding school student. And I guess I turned out right.

It is easy for the parent to blame it on boarding school but I guess they missed the sign when he was with them. They cannot categorically say he learned that bad behaviour from boarding school.

There were many of us who turned out right.

Yes some students could get mixed up with some bad elements in boarding school but some could equally learn good stuffs from good kids.

However, I agree with you that they should seek help for their kid as soon as possible.

If the parents had personally formed a closer tie with their kids monitoring him closely the damage won't be as much as this.

If the western peeps who brought in formal education hardly take their kids to a boarding school, boardings are meant for the orphanage child or children with no guardians but here in Nigeria the case is otherwise.

The white people who created boarding school then was because there was limited schools back then and kids would come from far places to study so the best option is to board them. I don't support kids with parents taking their children to a boarding school, if they can't sacrifice their time for their kids why did they then decide to make kids ?

It may be a condition that needs medical help.
But your child could be killed for stealing in Nigeria. The nob there is very aggressive. You need to put a stop to it .
This stealing starts when you don't respect other people property It starts at home by taking without asking. That is why I am very. Strict. You don't enter another child's room without asking or in their absence and you don't take anything or use without asking
IF you do I go for one ovf your most valued treasure. That way you learn the hard way. My first son was always fiddling on everything at age seven and then one day he spoilt my sewing machine I had just brought it back from being fixed. I did not say a word took his valuable toy and spoilt it. It was a hard decision but he learnt a lesson. When a child at a young age steals. Never let it keep what it stole. Make the child return the thing and apologise. .
If your kid comes home with anything. Confirm from the parents. I don't l let anyone give my kid's things without my knowing no matter how small.
