Oyo State Stops Payment Of WAEC Fees by snadguy007(m): 1:17pm On Aug 20, 2015

OYO State government has stopped further payment of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration fees of students in public schools in the state, commencing from the 2015/2016 academic session in September.

The government alluded the poor financial status of the state government and lackadaisical attitude of parents and students to promotion of quality education as reason for the decision.

Head of Service, Mr Soji Eniade, in a statement on Wednesday, said this was evidenced on the data on student enrolment and performance of students in WAEC examination in the last seven years.

The data revealed that between June 2007 and June 2013, only 14.27 per cent of 396,579 students that enrolled for the public examination passed.

While the government had spent N2,067,545,050 on the examination compared to the value of the number of students that passed, which amounted to N315,513.900.

In addition, the yearly mock examinations will henceforth, be conducted for final year students. This, the government noted was to ensure that only serious and quality students were presented by the state for public examinations.

Also, students will now pay N1,000 per term as Education Development Levy. The fund gathered would be utilised to compliment government’s effort at improving infrastructure in public secondary schools.

Other measures to improve students’ performance in state schools include that students must have 80 per cent attendance in class.

This, the statement said had become a prerequisite for promotion to higher classes.

Furthermore, extramural classes for students in JSS3 and SSS3 would be enhanced, while students in public secondary schools would proceed to the next class only if they passed their promotion examination. Henceforth, automatic promotion of students had been cancelled.

To ensure monitoring, Zonal Education Monitoring Committees will be inaugurated in all the eight educational zones of the state, in line with the provision of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act.

The mandate of the committee, to report to the government monthly, will be to monitor schools within the zones to ensure zero level of students’ truancy and social ills within and outside schools’ premises.

Good development. Those students are strange. They are in poverty instead of them to wise up and face their studies, they are zipping down chasing girls up and down.

Lets not even start with their parents? How do you flog your own child outta a classroom to go and hawk used Condoms

Free education= poor performance of the students.... most people/ parents don't even care about their children educational standards/status....... what you don't pay for. you dont value it.

Kudos to them for having done that for their future generation unlike some states who are good in media propaganda's without on ground evidence of such acts.

This is a good one,

If parents are serious their kids will perform better.

I know what some parent go through to make sure their kids get well educated.

What is given freely is sometimes not appreciated.

Right move only if the fund will be spent on something productive, continuity in the payment is like pouring water inside a basket.

They should improve education right from the primary school level so as to increase the capabilities of such pupils when they get to the secondary school.

We should not in the name of free education be abusing quality education, #1000 per term is not too much for parents to bear.

Smh, I'm sure there was no interaction wiv these students to find out where the problem lies, most of these children are bread winners even at their tender age. Maybe when the govts realise until they promptly pay the salaries of these students' parents, then the so-called students won't be used as hawking vessels in order to make ends meet, they'll settle and face their academics squarely.

If that will make the students sit up, then that's alright. They will never appreciate what they have till they lose it.

They should pay for exceptional students only, as a means of encouragement.

No such thing as free education.

I know you Nigerians love free education.....which is why you make fun of APC when in your hears of hearts you really want free education, but let's be honest.....APC cannot guarantee free education, no matter how many times they say it.

If you want free education.....you either pay high taxes , or you diversify your economy into industries....and get a tax base which can produce the kudi you need for free education. Which is what most state governors and Abuja should be doing.....instead of relying on oil whose price rises and drops wildly.

Will that now make him pay over 9 months salary he's owing the state's civil servant? will that increase the number of overseas trips his daughters make monthly? will that make his daughters have more connection with Hollywood actress and actors since they now have so much money to play around with. will that make him change IB's identity to 'city of white roofs' or will that make ibadan neat?

Not by speeches or majority resolution are questions of the day answered, but by blood and iron - Otto Von Bismarck.

Heads must roll if this country is going to experience the real change, imagine tinubu clamouring for a better Nigeria when he and his co-looters are benefiting from the ruin of the country. Buhari is a good man, his subjects, I don't know of.

MARKone:
They should pay for exceptional students only, as a means of encouragement.

They should not pay for any students. Instead...they should encourage parents to start saving for their kids exams, and school fees from the word go.
