Wise decision, those schools aren't equipped enough to be labelled Universities
You must still be a kid. Those schools are sufficiently more equipped and predated so many public universities. Adeyemi College of Education (an offshoot of OAU) for instance has been a degree-awarding institution for so long & recently celebrated its golden jubilee. Take a trip to those schools & you'll marvel at their infrastructure/equipment.

Let's be honest with ourselves; it was nothing more than a change of nomenclature; and you don't need that to improve curriculum. The real problem is our warped and unfair disregard for polytechnic and college of education qualifications. We need to give them the respect they deserve in society and stop making it seem like they are inferior.

Rivers state upgraded the state owned COE to UOE and the results have been great...

Bright students now seek admission to the University to pursue a degree in education. A degree that's equivalent to the degrees offered in other top Universities like OAU. resulting to a brighter pool of students aspiring to be teachers. Now that is the first step in giving teachers the respect you spoke about.

How do you expect someone with a degree to respect someone with an NCE who probably enrolled into a COE because he wasn't good enough to be admitted a B.Ed program in the University (Assuming his dream has always been teaching).

The Curriculum of the upgraded COEs will definitely be upgraded. That's inevitable.

I think the upgrade is ok. In advanced countries only few universities offer multiple courses. What they have is university of engineering, university of law, university of health sciences, university of agriculture, university of business administration etc. And in Nigeria we now have university of education, these system would go a long way to pave way for diff acaedemical fields to be efficient. Thank you

you are welcome

I do agree with you as regards having Specialised higher Institutions of learning, but my objection as evident in my post is on "upgrading" an already existing college of Education to a University, that's why I referred those who differ to research on TASCE/TASUED perhaps they'll commend the FG on the reversal of the recently upgraded ones.

If I may ask some questions: in reality and being objective, after upgrading

1. what happens to the college, does it go into extinction

2. what happens to the NCE programme of the college

3. will the University run both NCE and Degree programmes ? (Odd in Nigeria

4. if both institutions are to operate separately, who vacates the existing site and structures

5. what happens to the Academic and non Academic staff of the College, what criteria will be used to determine who goes where

etc

like I stated earlier, TASCE/TASUED is a case study

Thanks

How could you just wake up one morning to overturn colleges of education to universities when our secondary schools are lacking capable teachers. I just see it as one of Jonathan's way of returning kindness and asking for more favour in the last election, after all if you scratch my back, i scratch yours.

even though I am not happy with the decisions. the people who were against it were the provost of the institution and the academic staff. the upgrade will mean that lecturers will have to take a pay cut. A principal lecturer in a college of education earns over 450,000 naira and he doesnt have a PhD while in a university a even a Associate professor doesn't earn that. with the upgrade most of the chief lecturers would not even make senior lecturer( PhD and both journal and conference paper. while the provost would loose their seats. with the upgrade non academic staff would benefit more. in one of the colledge of education to be upgraded (FCE Zaria) they still use pen and paper to write you transcript at this day of ICT adoption they have the highest rate of exam malpractice students with low IQ because the admission requirement is 150. before converting them make a need assessment then upgrade their infrastructure and academic staff before conversation.

And the problem is....we do not have the funds.

And the good products from them make a large chunk of our today' leaders. Look in your own family and see how many bright people you have in it that went through these same univs. I am not saying we have not produced bad products but at the same time we have produced more good than bad ones. Are we supposed to fold up schs becoz some people came up out with poor grades?

Buhari is an enemy of progress....

why is he trying so hard to rubbish the achievements of his predecessor

Does he think Nigeria is his private estate where out of vengeance and retribution he can dish out orders and decrees without recourse to how it may affect the masses.. for Heaven sake the colleges of education were just upgraded to universities of education and still cater to the grooming of teachers and other teaching oriented professions, y the reversal.. Y not equip the said universities, is government no longer a going concern??

Ordinarily, there shoudn't be any diffference in the quality of education one must receive at any of this institutions be it universities, polytechnics or colleges of education. Whatever status they bear must not limit their proper equipment and structuring to meet standard educational needs..

However, in the context of the Nigeria educational structure and systems, with the ever present discrimination meted out to students from polytechnics and colleges of educations, there needs to be some adjustments, and i think this was what prompted the decision to the upgrade of this institutions to universities...

also this institutions; Alvan for example have being running affiliated programs with other universities(UNN in the case of Alvan) for many years now and already have the structures in place for upgrades.. so the policy reversal with all its political undertones is totally wrong.

If he goes ahead with this, i hope he also reverts the other universities established mostly in the north during the past administration

Nigeria ntorrrr

Good move...imagine Colleges of Education (not even polytechnics) becoming FEDERAL universities!

they were renamed universities of education, there are already universities in that genre.

Most do award degrees and have degree programs, the problem was jonathan did the upgrading at the last minute, making it look as if the decision was impromptu.

The decision is obviously due to the fall in funds from dropped oil prices.

In other words....no money. And that has been obvious since 2013.

O.P VERIFY YOUR NEWS BEFORE YOU POST TRASH.THIS IS THE NEWS WE RECEIVED FROM OUR ACTING V.C WHO IS CURRENTLY ON A VISIT TO USA
GOODWILL MESSAGE FROM PROF OLUKOYA
OGEN TO ALL ARBICANS
Dear colleagues,
Greetings from Chicago, Illinois. Hope all of you
are well. I am fine here and the weather is
superb. There is tremendous progress regarding
the grant and other proposed collaborations.
Meanwhile, this is to quickly clarify our University
status. Contrary to the news making the rounds,
the FG has not outrightly
reversed our status, but only puts its
implementation on hold, ostensibly, pending the
enactment of the necessary legal
frameworks by the National Assembly.
Authoritative sources from Abuja and a scanned
copy of the FG memo sent to me expressly says
''Put on hold' and not
'reversal' This is in order to follow due process
and to make budgetary provision
for the new universities. Staff and students are
therefore urged to remain calm so that the legal
stage could be fast tracked with
the same tact, vigour and speed that brought
about the initial Presidential pronouncement last
May. The Chairman, CoDs, Dr Gbade Ikuejube,
has been directed
to continue to oversee the affairs of our great
institution until my return next week.
Sincere regards,
Prof Olukoya Ogen.
Prof Olukoya Ogen is currently in the United
State of America (USA) and he also in talk with
some Universities in USA on ways to collaborate
with AFUED.
A 20 Million Dollar Grant is also on the way. The
Professor of History is expected back to the
University Next week.

Which University pls? Am 4rm Alvan. Thanks a lot!

This is Cluelessness in an amazing dimension.

What do you tell the parent and the students that have sat for Post Utme exams in those schools?

Most of the schools had been running degree programmes of Top Universities in the Country with ease. The issue of capacity and infrastructure is out of place.

If Buhari keep fuming about lack of funds in this country, then it is crystal clear that he has no blueprint to on ground to change bring the much touted change in all sector of the economy.
Nigeria needs progression and not retrogression at this moment.

The level of ignorance of some Nigerians is just mind blowing. Because some of us have university degrees we think we are kings. For those that are ignorant and still remain arrogant in their ignorance because you have a "bachelors degree" in whatever field, have you ever wondered why college of education and polytechnic graduates get jobs faster than university graduates? The answer is simple, polytechnic graduates know the practical aspects and college of education graduates are taught the psychology behind whatever course they are learning so as to communicate it better to their students/pupils, while in universities you are just taught theories.
For those saying colleges of education can't and shouldn't be upgraded to university status are just mischievous. These college of education students study an average of 20 courses a semester and most these schools run degree programs in the name of reputable universities in the country without inputs in terms of manpower from the said unversities and still churn out quality B.Ed graduates.
So our president should be educated on the demerits of what he just did.
