My final note on the QS and engineers rivalry as regards costing of some engineering developments.

First of all, I raised this issue so that clients and citizens can be aware of the current situation of things between the two professions. Both engineers and QS already know this since time immemorial.

The role of QS is non disputable in the building construction industry. The resistance QS is facing is in other areas of engineering developments that I've already highlighted in most of my previous posts.

The goal of specialisation and development of a profession transcends earning a living from it, rather, it's a means towards national development - which should be the focus of any well meaning citizen.

Nigeria is currently a developing country and with lots of infrastructure gaps to be put in place to meet her teeming populations. As of now, Nigeria cannot boast of steady and uninterrupted power supply, homegrown automobile industry, homegrown advanced and mechanized crop production for food security, sustainable and cost effective road construction technology, inadequate railing system and myriads of other infrastructure problems. In a nutshell, Nigeria is bedeviled with unsolved engineering problems. Compared to medical profession in Nigeria, home trained doctors, pharmacists, nurses, medical laboratory scientists and other related health workers have been fully managing the health of Nigerians since time immemorial. In Nigeria of today, the engineering profession is the most proliferated by expatriates just to fill the vacuum of technical know how that our home trained engineers are lacking. What a pity!

Come to think of it, I see no serious researches in this area by our all knowing engineers to solve these problems to make life easy for a common man. Please do not get me started on lack of funding or political will to meet these challenges. In Nigeria tertiary institutions, there are lots of professors of engineering in virtually all fields of engineering practised in this country. You begin to wonder, what novel innovations have earned them this highly prestigious academic status without corresponding research outputs for national developments. These scholars are highly funded through TETFUND, grants etc. The point I am making here is that the vast numerous engineering problems in the country are so great that the engineering body in the country should rather be too busy finding lasting solutions to them rather than encroaching into other professions. QS is not the only body having problems with them. So also is Estate Surveyors and Valuers who are contending with engineers on valuation of plants, machinery and other engineering developments for whatever purpose.

To my audience, the matter between the engineers and QS as regards costing of engineering works is already subjudice (the case is already in court) so that the court can interpret the act of the National Assembly establishing the two professions. You know in law, you cannot argue a case in public that is already ongoing in court. I only brought it up here for educational purpose.

May Nigeria win all her battles.

Well understood boss, Nobody is saying QS role is not important in building services. i have so many of them as friend and we learn from each other.

i bought the attached book for my own personal use. This book is for QS and engineers, I have read it and it really helps alot. The problem in Nigeria is that most people don't normal practice.

Why You Need Detailed Structural Design

Detailed structural design is the stage where the design of a building is refined and plans, specifications and estimates are created. It is the stage where the full cost of the project is identified and often includes outputs like 2D and 3D models, build up estimates, procurement plans and others. It involves the process of taking on and developing the approved concept.

The detailed design stage describes all structural parts completely and precisely and how they fit together. It investigates the stability, strength, and rigidity of the structure in respect of the physical requirements of the building. It serves as the basis for the construction phase and it allows for appropriate adjustment of the entire project cost. It ensures that the design solution satisfies the objectives of the project.

Hence, the basic reason for detailed design is to develop the initial sketch plan design into more detailed building documentation which provides sufficient information for applications for statutory approval to be made.

It is to produce an efficient structural system, capable of resisting specified applied loads without failure during its intended lifecycle. The design should determine the most suitable proportions, dimensions and details of the structural elements and connections.

Components of Detailed Design

The following components must be included in the complete detailed design.

- Overall layout

- Road layouts and landscape

- Operational flows and departmental operational policies

- Horizontal and vertical circulation routes, including accessibility requirements

- Schedules of accommodation, including occupancy numbers for each space

- Identification of standard and non-standard room layouts

- If appropriate, room data sheets

- Building dimensions and gridlines

- Architectural plans sections and elevations of buildings, parts of buildings and components. These include: block plans, site plans and external works, changes in floor levels, expansion joints, demarcation of changes to finishes, and reflected ceiling plans.

- Outline specification including schedules of components, defining the performance and/or material standards required (including colours).

- Elements of design that require specialist input or early choice of manufacturer. Designers should investigate suppliers certificates, warranties, and compliance with standards.

- Requirements for mock-ups, testing, samples or models necessary to satisfy performance or public relations requirements.

- Key assemblies, component drawings and schedules with special attention to junctions and interfaces between elements which will influence the structural or services designs or have an effect on the spatial allowances. Key details will include: External walls, lining, cladding, glazing, windows and blinds, balconies, canopies and entrances, roofing and finishes, rooflights, drainage, gutters and outlets, floor constructions and finishes, staircases, damp proof courses, service duct and services plan enclosures, load bearing internal walls and partitions, including lifts and other shafts, non-load bearing partitions, ceiling construction and support, overall dimensions and fixing details for fixed equipment such as sanitary fittings and joinery, roads, paths, paving, boundaries and retaining walls, and external gradients and falls including gutters and outlets.

Other components include:

- Initial schedules
- Structural plans sections, elevations and specifications
- Building services plans, sections and elevations
- Define phases if the project is to be phased. This can be complicated by items that appear in buildings intended for later phases, but that are required for the operation of earlier phases, for example, boilers or escape stairs.

My issue, while still cost savings, was not materials really but lack of experience of the Carpenter. My issue with Nigeria isn't fraud, corruption, etc. My issue is simply lack of accountability. If back in California I would have research Carpenters license before the job and now taken him to the state board on my way to suing him and his insurance company.

A licensed carpenter in the US is not a walkover average Joe. Moreover, you a typical Nigerian immigrant with an accent can’t afford a lawyer that can face his union backed attorney in court.

All the time California this, California that. How many people did you sue for over 35 years you were there? None, zero.
Typical mind set of a destroyer. Always in the mode to bring down what he can never build.
