Do u call graduates of today literate? If u do, den u ar not pinching and or telling urself d truth. Most of our universities now a days ar Glorified Secondary School, and dia products ar disaster to dia family and d nation at large. A secondary school leaver of 1985s downwards will obviously floor a self proclaimed university graduate of today. I honestly believe dat technology of today ought to increase d knowledge of dis generation, but reverse is d case, in our days no Google, GSM, DSTV to assist in knowledge building, all we had den were analog, if u dia seek for information u will av to visit d library to open volumes of Books. We need divine intervention to bring us back on rail, I was Jst reading on Nairaland now dat out of 700 Best Universities in d world, no Nigeria university is among. What a shame. |

@ databoy. 1. What if the instruction says send CVs to this email, do you still go ahead to send cover letter? 2.I think this problem is caused by the culture of paper hanging that we've developed as a nation in the past 40 years or more. We just want to acquire more certificates. We just want to have a degree. we just want to have more degrees rather than getting education and developing skills and continuously learning and expanding the frontiers of our God-given talents. We say the degree holders are better than polythecnic graduates. We say a mechanical engineer who spent years in the univeristy craming engineering theories is better than that autotechnician who helps him fix his car by the road side. Pls, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying going to the university is bad. Never! I love to go to Stanford, Yale, Harvard, MIT, Dartmouth, INSEAD etc. But the question we should be asking ourselves is why? Why do I need that degree? Is it to get great education and develop valuable skills that can help solve problems or to just be a certified graduate? Having said that, I think hiring managers have to up their games in sifting the wheat from the chaff and think critically on how to hire and retain talents. It can't be business as usual. It can't be the conventional model of asking 2.1 or 1st class applicants to forward CVs and cover letters and interview afterwards, asking the same boring hiring questions. I'm not surprised at the result you gave, it's highly expected because we're doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I think the solution to hiring real talents will be what I call 'Guerilla Hiring' - It's employing contrarian thinking into hiring.Even Google is changing the way it's hiring because they realize strong GPs, being able to solve high level algebraic equations in a record time, being a graduate of Stanford etc are not helping them get great talents they desire. To the job hunters, I don't think your situation is hopeless. Though, I must mention that it's sad that graduates still struggle to communicate both orally and in writing effectively. In as much as I believe that our educational system has to rebuild its foundation I think the real problem is that we're churning out more people (either baked or half baked) into the unemployment market without having enough industries to absorb them. There's more supply than demand. Period! So, what's the solution in this sitation? The solution will be, go create a job! And, if you think you're not into the entrepreneurial thing, for you to get a job and keep that job you must be really realy smart. You must develop job search skills, interviewing skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, networking skills, project mgt skills, financial literacy, marketing skills, management and leadership skills, some times 'boot licking skills', technology skills, learning skills etc. And also don't forget that you must have an exit strategy. I think the ultimate solution to being relevant (either in intrapreneurship or entrepreneurship) in this civilization is what I call 'MultiSpec' - Multiple specializations. It's no more being a specialist in a particular field or being a generalist. It's creating a culture of expert, having expert knowledge and develpoping specializations in more fields of endeavour. databoy247: You are advising people on recruitment experience which is good. You are also advising people on abbreviation "u" "k" which is also good. However, how can you write "I" as "i"? It's a shame on your part. I have also conducted recruitment exercise and immediately I see "I" written as "i", in your email body, I don't even bother opening the person's CV. Obviously you won't pass my recruitment exercise. 3 Likes |

Gherrokid: Most likely the second option. It becomes immediately obvious that most 'graduates' are semi-literate, once they put pen to paper. |

In my opinion, the problem is double standard from some of the hiring managers.. Hiring decisions are not always objective. People need to understand that even the best and most qualified often times do not get the vacant job. If the instruction says send your resume, just do that And for those screaming graduates are UNEMPLOYABLE... No worry judgement day is coming.. |

@ databoy or house in general. please what do you mean by sending an empty mail? A company asks that I send my Cv, I did that with a cover letter. Ie sent it as an attachment. Is it wrong? And Is it also better I send in Cv, cover lettet and application letter whether I am asked or not. Thank you. |

dearpreye: My bosses dearpreye and ideykwum it seems the op is just arriving. @op we've been singing this song that you have placed on auto repeat. I wish I could make videos of our HR interview process. You will be shocked to the marrow. Please youths, graduates, undergraduates on this forum: when someone tells you are unemployable, ask the person to assist you in ways the person can in order to improve yourself. Coaches and managers see what players can't see while playing. We all need each other. It's a circle (albeit not a vicious one). I employ you today, you employ my wards tomorrow and it goes on and on. Question: who do I pass the baton to if the next person isn't ready? Food for thought. One love to all. 1 Like |

Honestly there are exceptionally brilliant/creative graduates out there and the same time exceptionally dull and lazy ones. Its not just the unemployed alone, even some of the employed ones are what I call office decor,no input and ni tangible output. I remember a time when an Msc mechanical graduate with years of experience was been interviewed and my boss asked him “how do you know when you generator is due for service" and confidently my guy replied “when the generator starts smoking." Sometimes I wonder if people actually know what a smart phone is meant for asides pings and updates. Thanks for the info bros,at least I have another standard for tomorrow with which I can critic my applications. |

So many block head graduates around. And d funniest thing is they always tend to discourage the smart ones. Disassociate urself from such people if they are ur friends or don't tell them anything when preparing for any job interview. |
