According to the American heritage dictionary of the English language of the fifth edition define substandard product as failing to meet required standard. Products that are inferior, inadequate, unacceptable, imperfect, second-rate and shoddy are all substandard. These products are not healthy to the economy of any nation and thus must be checked through an institution like the standard organization of Nigeria (SON) who has the authority to check the standard of product manufactured or produced in Nigeria and also the imported ones into the country.

According to the Director General, Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Odumodu, said the influx of substandard foreign products in the country was slowly killing the nation’s economy. Odumodu made the remark at a two-day North-west zonal sensitization seminar on zero tolerance for substandard products held at the Giginya Hotel, Sokoto. According to him, the menace of such substandard products from abroad had led to the collapse of many industries especially in the North-west. He observed that the influx of such products particularly from China was responsible to a large extent, the collapse of most industries in Kano state, which is the economic hub of the North.”As you are aware, substandard products have affected our economy. If you go to Kano today, you will discover that most companies there have collapsed because we have ignored standards and that is why we are suffering.”In fact, some of this foreign products being consumed in Nigeria are injurious to our health and poor people are dying and nobody is asking questions, “he said.He noted that some companies left Nigeria for a more conducive environment because they are losing money and no longer making profit and attributed the problem to substandard products.
