About yesterday. . .

So, I was returning from school and, well, was on my way to Skye Bank with a friend. Not like I had anything to do there, I was just escorting her. So, we got in the car, and I'm just super glad the car was parked in a car park with only 4 cars. It might have been a much different story if there were other cars beside the car.

So, I started the ignition and the car didn't start. Then, we noticed smoke coming out from the bonnet. It didn't look like much, and I actually thought it was just the engine overheating or something. As I went to open the bonnet, the smoke kept increasing and increasing, but I still didn't know it was a fire.

The security guys at the car park screamed at me to get out of the area, and that the car was on fire. Turns out we couldn't see the fire, but they could, because it was beneath the bonnet of the car. I stepped away immediately, and they rushed down as fast as they could.

I really don't know how to thank them though. They were of immense help yesterday. They joined in helping me remove every important thing in the car, including our bags, phones, laptops, vehicle particulars etc.

We tried to open the bonnet of the car, but the heat was just too much. A guy came with this really big stick, and I dunno how he did it, but He got the bonnet opened, and there was the fire in all its glory. By now, the whole engine was on fire, in raging flames.

I was freaking scared.

Someone brought a fire extinguisher, but it was empty.

A second extinguisher was brought, same story.

Finally, a third extinguisher was brought and it was used to quench the fire.
I decided to check my fire extinguisher to see if is empty also

i removed the thin rubber hook, slide out the metallic stopper and pressed it and loo and behold, it was empty.
that was when i noticed the meter next to the lid which read zero.
I bought it in traffic so i could not double check.

Please folks, check with your fire extinguisher right away.
this could be the difference between just a few thousand naira vehicle parts replacement or a total loss.
Not to talk of a possible difference between life and death.

Great

- so many fake fire extinguishers in circulation.
- so many lax regulatory framework around its marketing
- poor quality control by those in authority
- high cost leading to low patronage of product

Fire extinguishers should be checked weekly by car user while serviced after every six months. That way, one is pretty sure of serviceability of such very important safety equipment in cars.

Very informative!!..Mine happened fews years back as a medical house officer.I was going back to my room around 3am when I saw my consultants generator on fire. I quickly dashed to my car a grabbed my fire extinguisher; feeling like a hero already and dreaming of the goodwill that will be showered on me by my consultant grin.As I pressed and aimed the nozzle on the generator, nothing happened to my Utter disbelieve and shock. Finally it took the use of the normal fire extinguishers usually seen hanging on the walls to save the day.

I'm not surprised since the day I saw a guy when I was in Benin city wailing after buying a blackberry loaded with fufu.

In another news I bought a new fire extinguisher last week when I was about to travel. I need to check it asap

Well, when next you see smoke coming out of the engine don't open the bonnet rather use the CORRECT TYPE of fire extinguisher to fight the fire through the exhaust pipe. opening the bonnet will allow oxygen in which will cause more fire.
