Health Alert : Swine Flu Epidemic

Background

On Friday 24th April, 2009, health officials in Mexico City, Mexico identified a new strain of Swine flu, which caused illnesses and deaths among its citizens. As at today, Monday 27th April 2009, there are so far 1614 suspected cases and 103 deaths recorded from the Flu in Mexico. However, only 22 cases had been clinically confirmed by laboratory tests as directly resulting from the swine flu.

The outbreak has also been reported in other countries of the world. In United States, 20 confirmed cases of Swine Flu had been identified in 5 cities (California, Kansas, New York City, Ohio and Texas) but with no fatality. Canada has reported 6 cases while Israel, New Zealand and Spain were investigating unconfirmed cases of Swine Flu.

The majority of cases have occurred in otherwise healthy young adults. Laboratory tests conducted in Canada have shown genetic linkage among the viruses identified in United States and Mexico, which might be indicative of an emerging pandemic. The virus has been described as a new subtype of A/H1N1 not previously detected in swine or humans.

Present Situation in Nigeria

So far, no suspected case of the Flu has been reported in Nigeria but the Federal Government is fully prepared to contain any outbreak of Swine Flu in the country.

Measures already put in place are:

We have strengthened surveillance at all ports of entry into the country – airports, seaports and all land borders. We have our surveillance officers present and fully ready in all Local Government Areas, States and at the Federal level.

We have in stock adequate quantities of Tamiflu, the drug of choice for treatment and we wish to by this inform all clinicians and health workers to report any suspected case of Swine flu to the Epidemiology Division, Department of Public Health, Federal Ministry of Health.

Fact Sheet on Swine Flu

Definition – Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by a type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans; however, human infections with swine flu do occur.

Symptoms of Swine Flu

1. Fever

2. Sore throat

3. Cough

4. Stuffy Nose

5. Headache and body aches

6. Fatigue

7. Diarrhea and Vomiting

8. Severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure), leading to death.

How do people get infected?

People usually get swine influenza from infected pigs, however, human-to-human transmission has occurred in some instances.

Is it safe to eat pork and pork products?

Swine influenza has not been shown to be transmissible to people through eating properly handled and prepared pork (pig meat) or other products derived from pigs. The swine influenza virus is killed by cooking temperatures of 70°C.

Pandemic risk?

It is likely that people, especially those who do not have regular contact with pigs, or do not have immunity to swine influenza viruses that can prevent the infection are likely to be infected. If a swine virus establishes efficient human-to human transmission, it can cause an influenza pandemic

Vaccine

Presently there is no vaccine. This is because influenza viruses change very quickly and the match between the vaccine and the circulating virus is very important to give adequate protective immunity to vaccinated people. It will take up to 3-6 months to develop adequate quantities of vaccines for this disease.

Drugs for treatment

Antiviral drugs such as tamiflu (Oseltamivir) and Relenza are used for treatment.

How do you protect yourself?

· Avoid close contact with people who appear unwell and who have fever and cough.

· Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly.

· Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.

If there is an ill person at home:

• Try to provide the ill person a separate section in the house.

• Cover mouth and nose when caring for the ill person using face masks

• Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly after each contact with the ill person.

• Try to improve the air flow in the area where the ill person stays.

• Keep the environment clean with readily available household cleaning agents.

What should I do if I think I have Swine Flu?

If you feel unwell, have high fever, cough and/or sore throat:

* See your doctor

• Stay at home and keep away from work, school or crowds as much as possible.

• Rest and take plenty of fluids.

• Cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues when coughing and sneezing and dispose of the used tissues properly.

• Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly, especially after coughing or sneezing.

• Inform family and friends about your illness

If you need medical attention:

•Please, contact your Doctor

If the developed countries U.S, European countries, et-al are having a hard time containing the spread of the virus with all their sophisticated facilities, hw naija wan manage?

Their effort is however laudable and I do commend the minister and his staff but I'd rather a lasting solution is found b4 it gets 2 Naija. . . Amen! lipsrsealed

Yeah it is no longer news that another dangerous animal-induced epidemic has broken out-the swine flu. Though thank God that it has not reached Nigeria yet. What should be the news and the concern of Nigerians about the outbreak is whether our government is preparing to curtail the spread of the epidemic to Nigeria. I can say yes. The Minister of Health in collaboration with all major stakeholders have risen to the challenges by putting all modalities in motion to arrest the situation. The following have bee put in place:
*adequate qualified health personnel to diagnose and screen any suspecting patient of the disease
* provision of necessary diagnostic equipments
*Establishment of world -class diagnostic laboratory with sophisticated equipment at Asokoro Hospital to tackle the problem
*Effective collaboration with agencies like WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, DFID, USAID, FAO, and other NGOs  to map out plan for arresting outbreak in Nigeria
*All airport are to be on the alert against immigrants form Mexico where the disease broke out
*Establishment of inter-ministerial committee to collaborate on the epidemic-Ministries of Health, Agric, and Aviation.
*Establishment of special crisis centre to manage the problem

All these are steps in the right direction. We also should adhere to the alert on the mode of transmission and prevention of the disease. Lets be on the alert and warn ourselves this time around.

This time around we have technocrat who knows his onion heading the ministry and he has at different fora stated the modalities put in place to tackle the problem Enough of this pessimism and mentality of negativity and let's support him. We as citizens too have a lot to do by being careful of our lifestyles. The health issue is the concern of all Nigerians. The whole world is on alert .The swine flu virus appeared Saturday in Mexico and has already killed nearly 150 people. The spread is fast and dangerous. Only three days after being detected, suspected cases have been discovered in the United States, Canada, Spain, Great Britain, China ,  On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its alert level to 4 on a scale of 6, which corresponds to a high pandemic risk. For the moment Africa appears not to be affected, but the continent is highly vulnerable, says the UN.

Tuesday 28 April 2009

"No region in the world is safe" from the swine flu virus, declared the World Health Organization (WHO) as it raised its alert level to 4 on a scale of 6. This indicates a "significant increase in the risk of a pandemic." Major tourist destinations in Africa are particularly exposed to this risk. In a statement released Monday, Michele Montas, spokeswoman for Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, said that poor African countries are particularly vulnerable. According to her, after multiple crises that have beset the world in recent times, namely; food, energy, economic and financial ,  the UN must "ensure that they (African countries that are hardest hit by the seies of crises) are not disproportionately affected by a potential health crisis. The World Bank, development agencies and humanitarian assistance of the United Nations are ready, she says, to make funds available to countries that need to combat the epidemic.

Fever detectors at Moroccan airports

A few African countries have already announced precautionary measures. In Morocco, close to Spain, where the first European case of the disease has been reported, the Ministry of Health has stated that provisions against the introduction of A/H1N1 viruses on its territory have been made. A device already in place since 2005 has been reactivated. An earlier plan to combat an outbreak of the avian flu is still pertinent in the fight against the swine flu, according to the authorities of the Kingdom of Morocco. The main measures concerned, basically, involve the strengthening of health checks at land borders, ports and airports. Fever detecting cameras have also been installed at airports. Epidemiological surveillance, both clinical and biological, of the common flu and acute respiratory infections has also been strengthened. In Algeria, Ghana and Togo, health authorities on Monday said they were closely observing the development of the disease and have increased health checks. Although the African media has loudly sounded the alarming and rapid spread of the virus around the world as well as the alert given by the World Health Organization (WHO), most African states have remained silent in the face of a looming health catastrophe.

Adhering to the rules of basic hygiene

The disease, which appeared in Mexico April 24 and has already caused an estimated 150 deaths among thousands of cases, is spreading like wild fire the world over. Known or suspected cases have been detected in the United States, Canada, Spain, Australia, Israel, China ,  The disease, type A flu virus H1N1 is transmitted from person to person via the respiratory route. Last Sunday the WHO described the new virus as subtype A/H1N1 that has never been previously detected in pigs or humans. The symptoms of the swine influenza are similar to those of ordinary seasonal flus. They are characterized by fevers, headaches, aching muscles,  According to the World health organization, the virus responsible for recent human cases of swine influenza responds to oselatmivir molecules (marketed as Tamiflu) and zanamivir (whose trade name is Relenza). To be effective, Tamiflu must be taken no later than 48 hours after the onset of symptoms, indicated the manufacturing laboratory, Roche.Several other laboratories indicate that the first doses of a vaccine will only be available in 4 months. But this time limit remains to be confirmed in relation to the characteristics of the virus. In the meantime, health professionals strongly recommend that basic hygiene rules (washing of hands, avoiding physical contact , ) be strictly adhered to.According to the WHO, which announced the dangers surrounding the spread of the virus, the AH1N1 flu pandemic can be avoided.

Pls relax!
Nigeria has not recorded any case, so we don't need it.
And if anything happens, the Ministry will inform us about what to do.

Horus, let me allay your fear now that we don,t have it already in Nigeria. And I want to believe that authorities in Nigeria are on top of the situation. So, we can at least for now heave a sigh of relief. More so, we all need to take all precautionary measures against it as it has been released by the Health Ministry. Prevention is better than cure!
