After 19 years of marriage, you would think that two people
would know pretty well every intimate secret about each
other. Things are going to come out when you live in such
close proximity, although, ideally, partners should be sharing
their lives with each other in detail anyway. However, for
one Belgian man’s marriage, even almost two decades
there was still one big surprise he just couldn’t deal with: his
wife had been born a man.
Jan, now 64, met Indonesia native
‘Monica’ in 1993 when she was working
as an au pair for Jan’s sister’s children.
As he told Belgium’s Nieuwsblad newspaper, “My second
marriage was on the rocks at the time and we quickly fell in
love.” He described her as “very beautiful and feminine. I
thought she was an attractive woman, and she was all
woman – she had no male traits.”

Before they married, Jan asked her if
she wanted children. Much to his relief
– Jan already had two children from his
previous marriages – although she was
27 at the time, she said she didn’t, and
she claimed to be on the pill for the
duration of their marriage.
Even during sex, Jan suspected nothing, although he says
Monica always used a lubricant. “She was always a good
mother to my children, and also a fantastic cook, though
she wasn’t that great at cleaning and ironing – and now I
know why!”
Before they married, Jan asked her if she wanted children.

More recently, their marriage suffered as
Monica insisted on going out late in
revealing clothing. Yet Jan didn’t
suspect his wife was a transsexual until
one of her cousins visited and dropped
a hint.
“I mentioned it to my son and he said he’d heard a rumor
too that Monica used to be a man,” Jan says. “One evening
I confronted her and she finally confessed she had been
born a boy and had a sex change operation. My world
collapsed in a few seconds. I was horrified. I feel like I have
been violated for almost 20 years.”
Jan sought to evict Monica after he found out, but a judge
ruled against him so they’re living under the same roof for
the time being, although they rarely speak.
