Recently, during the 81st meeting of the university governing council, one of their resolutions (which was No. 5) was that students charges will be increased to:
(A) 2015/2016 intake:- N44,250
(B) Returning: - N39,520
Which indicates more that 100% increment on the current registration fees of N22,500 for new intake and N14,500 for returning students.
But the SUG kicked against it and even wrote a letter to the VC of the university copying PMB, speaker Reps, North-Eastern senators, Bauchi State gov and Perm. Sec Fed Min of Education among many others.

Below is the full content of the letter:

The Vice Chancellor,
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi,
Through
The Dean,
Students Affairs Division
Sir,
RESOLUTION OF STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT ON THE INCREMENT IN STUDENTS SERVICE CHARGES/REGISTRATION FEES
With reference to the major decisions from 81st meeting of university governing councils on resolution No. 5 that students charges will be as follows:
(A) 2015/2016 intake:- N44,250
(B) Returning: - N39,520
Which indicates more that 100% increment on the current registration fees of N22,500 for new intake and N14,500 for returning students. The Students Union Government hereby categorically rebukes, reject and resist any increment and could inexorably battle the increment which has the inclination to depopulate the university. The Students Union Government is justifiably opposing increment in students service charges for the following reasons:

1. There are no concrete achievements to display after the increasing students service charges in 2012/2013 academic session. The learning environment is still inadequate, access to modern facilities such as libraries, science laboratories, research and resource centers, computer laps, power supply, water supply, clinics, cafeteria, infrastructure and logistics are lacking. The students paid for the sport and sport facilities where not provided, which leads to our inability to attend NUGA and other sport competition. And even the internet service that was categorically stated as one of the major reasons for the 2012/2013 increment, students do not have access to it, only staffs are enjoying at the expenses of the students.

2. Vast majority of students studying in ATBU are jobless and self-supported, while the cost of living remains very high couple with hyper-inflation, underpayment of civil servants with the minimum wages of N18,000.00 which is only less than half of new students charges, low household income and acute poverty due to Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east that has high level of illiteracy, high level of school drop-out and one of the poorest zone in the country that constitute about 80% of the students in ATBU.

3. Education is not a privilege, but a fundamental right according to Article 26 0f the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Chapter II, sub-section 18 of the Nigerian Constitution.

4. ATBU, Bauchi was never established for profiteering or profit maximization. To our knowledge ATBU, Bauchi is not a revenue generating entity, but a public institution solely established to contribute to national development by providing quality tertiary education in technology which was named after the illustrious son of Nigeria, the then prime minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
We hereby implore the ATBU management not to forget the institutions’ past and the long way it has been traveling.
For indeed, the greatness of ATBU is neither in it is architectural ingenuity nor in the exquisite magnificence of it is major edifices, but lies rather in the longtime tradition and ideology which the institution has continued to hold onto in the past 35 years of it is existence. Due to it is affordability, the institutions has been able to turn the lives of many families around by making advanced education accessible to brilliant children from poor homes. Many of them are now their families’ bread winners due to ATBU’s students’ charges that come with human face. This is the greatness of ATBU that people keep talking about.

Finally, the fact that this vicious increment will deny poor people access to education which also has the tendency of disfranchising the populace from acquiring knowledge, increasing the rate of violence/societal vices in the society and disrupting academic exercise in the university of brilliant poor students.
We call on the university management to reverse the increment for the wellbeing of our peaceful university.

We hope our request will be given due consideration and the increment will be reverse with immediate effect.

Well.....here is the reason why your fees are going up.....

1.In 2009, ASUU and the FG signed an agreement that guaranteed N3 tr for the universities.....which was to be used for among other things, funding facilities development.

2.In 2013....Government told ASUU the truth. We do not have money. Instead of the N3 trillion, Government told ASUU that they would gove universities N1 trillion , in instalments of 200bn over 5 years. ASUU was forced to agree (by Nigerians....who were tired of that year's strike).

3.Unrelated....but in 2014, Polytechinics and the Ministry of Education agreed on new salary scale for poly lecturers. When they took the new scale to the Salaries Office (R.M.A.F.C).....they were told that it was ''Not Possible''

See a pattern here, ladies and gentlemen?

4.In July 2014.....oil price went down from $130 per barrel to $50 per barrel today. Suddenly our treasury went from looking like a kwashiorkor victim to looking like a marasmus victim.(Sorry, I am a doctor smiley)

5.In 2015....the second instalment of N200bn WAS NOT PAID. ASUU raised alarm, but no takers. Also in 2015....Govt announced a budget of N4 trillion (In 2009 they promised ASUU N3trillion). Seeing the pattern yet.

6.University VC's panic.....and start raising fees....eg UniIfe, LASU, UniPort, etc. Now ATBU.

The problem is, it has become difficult for government to fund universities in Nigeria. Govt runs too many of them, and they all need money. Money government does not have .

That is why when I hear people say 'Govt should improve facilities, then increase fees''....I tell them....Improve facilities with which money? Money they no longer have thanks to the fall in oil price? And even if we collected all the money we looted....na only University we go fund?

In 1978...there were less than 90000 students in Nigerian Universities. Back then, students paid low fees...because govt could afford it. Now there are over 2 million. And there is no money for the education budget.

In my opinion, ATBU, and every other govt university MUST be privatised, fees must be raised, funding in forms of loans and grants should be provided for exceptional students, and more support should be given to primary, secondary and technical colleges....which need the money.

The era of free university educaiton is over. It has been over for decades. Time we faced the reality.

Sorry guys.

Greatest Balewites! This is total madness wallahi. How can they increase tuition fee by more than 100%. Their problem is too much; a very slow academic calender, victimization of students.

Even if mod move this to fp, it won't solve any issues. the best is for those concerned to publish it in national newspapers or write it as open letter to all the parties involved. must everything in nairaland make fp.

I agree with most of your points. In most part of the world university education is not cheap. But you have failed to take into consideration the economic situation of most Nigerians who live below a dollar per day where do you want them to get this exhorbitant fees
Even if fees are going to be increased or universities become privatised there should be some form of palliative measures such as scholarships for exceptional students, easily accessible student loans that can be paid over time as they have in Europe and America and other measures designed to reduce the shock of the hike in school fees. When such things are put in place then an increase in school fees can be justifiable. Aluta continua victoria acerta. Great Balewite
