People always misinterprete this yoruba tradition. There are two reasons why this is done.
1. Back in the day, yoruba kings were seen as demi-gods and highly revered. Therefore it was thought not to be proper for the young widows who were still young enough to remarry be taken up by mere mortals. Hence, another Oba must inherit them.

2. For the older wives, some of them very old. Who would take care of them if the new Oba sends them packing from the palace? Hence, he is also to become their husband thereby guaranteeing their sustenance till death. He might not even set eyes on them till they die. But he has the responsibility for their well being. That is the whole essence of this practice

Your explanation has just increased the shittiness and crappiness of the whole thing

The truth is he the new Ooni knew the tradition from onset so he is aware of what is waiting for him. You want to be king then be ready to face the music of tradition with all smiles.

So a sane person in this forum has no right to abuse or insult anybody ok. Anybody who want to be rich should be ready to fight his way to richness so also he who want to be king should be ready for what follows it.

It's their culture and tradition nothing anyone can do about it. What is my own culture is different from yours so if you don't want plenty wives the one you want and the ones forcefully given to you don't run a race of kingship simple as that and if by chance you are chosen take it that way and seek better way to sort the inherited ones out with no risk to your own life because in some town or city if you don't apply wisdom to the rules and want to proof a point you may likely see yourself in the grave in the next few days.

Why are some folks insulting the ladies though?

This is uncalled for, I guess you are using style to insult the office of the Ooni.

The fact is, whether he wants to inherit them or not, is entirely up to him and does not concern anybody.

So why the abusive language?

The article indicates that marrying them is optional, i.e. If that does not happen, they should remain single forever. It also appears that, the oloris have a choice not to marry the new king and remain single if they so chooses, even if the king wants to..

But, a casual interpretation of your rendition of the tradition supposes that, this marriage is compulsory and automatic...what if the mother of the new king is one of the Oloris? Yes, we all know, it will be a taboo to be doing bedmatics with one's mother, wouldn't it be equally taboo to marry one's mother, even when bedmatics will not be in the equation?
