with the recent appointment of Mr Sanusi as the CBN governor, one wonders if Mr President knows what he's doing.

The on going cry by the leaders in the opposition parties against the purported “northern agenda” of President Umaru Yar’Adua, which the government recently claimed as spurious, seems to have been confirmed by the latest appointment of Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a northerner from Kano State, as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In essence, the management of Nigeria’s treasury has been finally zoned to the North, with the present cabinet also having a northerner from Kano State, Dr. Mansur Mukhtar, as the Minister of Finance; the Minister for National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman is also from Kano State and the Chief Economic Adviser, Alhaji Tanimu Yakubu coming from Yar’adua’s home state, Katsina.

Thus, considering the fact that the CBN governor, hails from Kano State, and the Ministers of Finance, Kano and National Planning, Kano, is like the president is working against the principle of the Federal Character, looking through Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution which affirms that the appointments from the same state and ethnic group in a particular federal agency or sector is outlawed.
