Teaching In Nigeria Is Difficult Because The Pupils Are Too Intelligent —british by yusufu16: 4:11pm On Dec 26, 2015
A Briton, Mr. Graham Meredith, says that teaching in Nigerian schools is a difficult task. Meredith, the Principal of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, said this during the institution’s sixth graduation ceremony.

He said, “To be a principal in Nigeria is not an easy job because the kids want to learn. When you have pupils that want to learn and improve themselves, it becomes a big challenge as you have to prepare because they are intelligent.”

According to him, Nigerian educational system is also unique because of many factors, including the desire of the pupils to go for the best.

He added, “The pupils want to learn and they see it as an opportunity to go to the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Europe to further their careers. They work and study hard and have good manners. From what I have seen, Nigerian pupils also are very respectful.

“If you do well, you can get admission and meet other best scholars across the world. And if you go to the best universities, you are going to meet the best people. But you have to get the entry ticket.”

To boost the morale of teachers, he stated that motivation should be the primary factor to be taken into consideration.

Meredith added, “Teachers at Premiere are qualified and are specialists in their own field. While some of them have the minimum degree qualification, others have master’s degrees. Besides, teachers here are motivated.

Teaching is a difficult task. A teacher must prepare ahead of the class because most pupils/students already know what you want to teach them. To this group of pupils/students, you are reminding them about what they know.

They are the first to pass remarks such as, "Uncle, why is his spoken English poor?," "She is doing her master's in the university, why is her tenses bad? "Are university degree holders not supposed to be intelligent? "Why did she say that ecosystem is the same as ecology, but the former biology teacher differentiated them? "Our former teacher said that print, radio, television and film are media channels, but you are saying that media channels are the print, radio, television, and film is a channel of communication. Why is that so?"

And you will have to battle trying to save your fellow teacher's face and yourself, either by saying vacantly, that he read Engineering and not English and Literary Studies or he may have used a book different from the other teacher and trying to classify the media channels into product and the film as an experience. This will look hazy but you may have ended up creating two teachers, the wrong one and the other who teaches truth.

Is the above not the reason most young teachers in some Nigerian private secondary schools, and you will be shocked, private universities carry textbook and copy note directly to the board for the students. The brilliant students detest this teaching style.

Mr Meredith is very clear on that.

This's a whitewash!. The man is a British sponsored mouth piece to control what Africans should think. Is he drunk?.

How on earth will smart students create more problem for a teacher?.

If anything, a class full of smart kids would make teaching easier for teachers as they'll have less to explain, since they don't have to spend much time dealing with everybody's ignorance.

The man obviously know the truth, but of course western powers don't want us to know. I have explained the problem with education in Africa, and why we're where we are today.

Anybody who have a brain can see clearly this man is on a mission. His statement contradict every known fact about learning. He knows more than he want you to know.

Make time to read the part 1 and 2 of the link on my signature, it contains the problem with education in Africa and what Britain don't want you to know about education.

Please let me know the following:-

1. The logic behind smart kids being more difficult to educate.

2. The logic behind dumb kids being easier to educate.

Thank you.

A smarter kid is not usually content with answers to the current lessons/questions.

They tend to ask you a lot of ancillary questions relating to the topic at at hand. And then lots of WHY questions too.

"But why?"

And given they are kids, albeit smart ones, you still have to explain at their comprehension level. Something you can't do very well if you don't have, at least, a basic mastery of the subject.

if you want to find out about teaching in nigeria- go no further than nairaland.

1: topics with short pages = too boring or lacking in gossip or too intelligent with few intelligent folks who nail down the facts and conclude quickly.
2: topics with long pages = incontestably based on flimsly baseless invaluable themes or valuable ones with well researched answers but chronically argumentative ill-informed posters who cannot get beyond the 1st observations

You are very wrong with that. A class full of smart students tend to be competitive as they kep throwing questions at every sentence made by the lecturer.
When teaching a smart kid , you need to be smarter as they keep challenging everything you say.

If you noticed, I said "educate" not literarily "teaching". Yes, teaching a smart kid may prove more difficult, but ultimately easier to "educate" in the long run.

Having said that, only a lazy teacher would see a student asking honest questions as challenging, when all the teacher need is explain and the kid will pick the point immediately. It's more difficult to educate a dumb kid (because they wouldn't just understand a concept), so the teacher would have to explain many times to different kids. But, easier to educate a smart kid (cause they would understand when explained a point).

no wonder most of our nigerian born students who are over there in britain always excel and come out in flying colours. Their lecturers cant just help it. They just give them their required grades. No wonder a nigerian who is an alumni of the university of benin, won the world scrabble championship, even though most of the words were coined by the britons themselves.....

You completely took the teachers intent at face-value, symptomatic of a poor simpleton without depth.

As far as you're concerned, It is true because a white man says so. And, because a white man says so, it must be true.

Ironically, you all are proving the man wrong, without even knowing it!
