Tears run down my cheek as I type this. I went into d medical profession to Save lives, but today I watched a patient die and I could do nothing.
It was around 11am today, 26th Dec 2015, I wz in the emergency room as the only Dr & House officer on call in a state Specialist hospital wen a peugeot wagon followed by a police van drove in. They opened d doors & trunk and started bringing out Accident victims. I did a quick triage & saw dat d 2 in d trunk were in a more critical condition, So d immediate plan was to refer d 2 to FMC wia dey hav better hands and equipment to handle it. So I asked d policeman who d driver is so dat d 2 will be rushed to FMC & he said he died at d Accident scene. I ran outside to buy airtime to start calling other HOs, b4 I could return, dey had dropped d 2 & drove off.
I called other HOs, only 2 showed up, others had travelled. To my greatest suprise, I called a medical officer who is a snr colleague in d proffession, she said I shud nt touch anyone till dey paid. That I shud Infact refer all of dem. I was incapacitated, d patients were in pains, crying, calling on us to help, some already unconscious, but we couldnt help cos we have an order frm above.
Within 5mins, 1 young lady in her early 20s died. Abt 10mins later, another police van came and carried d remaining 7 to FMC.
This evening, some road safety corps came to inquire if any Accident victims were brought to our center. They had retrieved d manifest frm d vehicle and contacted d families of d passengers. Dey came wit d relations of one of d patients, and wen I told dem 1 of dem died, dey asked for d Description of d 1 dat died and I showed dem d pix of d gal dat died, behold she was d 1 dey were looking for and right there was the gal's fiancee. Their traditional wedding was to be in 3days tym
I want to use this medium to call on the govt to make policies dat"ll enable Drs treat patients in such condition. Let's Save the human race

Nigerians always quick to lay blame. The op just stated clearly that he is a house officer for God's sake. He had no business disobeying any order from a senior colleague. The best he could have done was try to appeal to his senior, nothing more. Also,a patient who died a few minutes after presentation at the clinic following a road traffic accident,I don't think a house officer would have done much to preserve such a patient.

Let's say he went ahead to disobey his senior by attending to the patient and the patient still died( which would probably have happened),do you know what he would have faced?

Don't get me started on the issue of deposits. Personally,I believe that asking patients to pay money before attending to them in emergency situations is wrong, but having interacted with most Nigerian patients, it's easy to understand why some hospitals maintain such a policy.

A little story. I covered a big private hospital in owerri during the night shift a few years ago. A man was rushed in one night with an obstructed hernia. He was in severe pains. As usual, no cash. I called the owner of the hospital. He instructed me to do nothing if they don't pay. The relatives appealed, knelt down and begged. I decided to help. With the assistance of two nurses, I did an emergency surgery for him. Two nights later, he sneaked out of the hospital without paying a dime. I worked till month end,I wasn't payed, and I lost my job. To what end and purpose if I may ask you. In the future, how eager to help do you think I will be?

So guys relax, before we start blaming folks, let's reason it all out first. Thanks boss...
It's all messed up mehn. Where do we even start?

Sadly, everyone is calling for the neck of the young man.

So you a doctor too?...shame on you too!...if you are with the op or you have done same before or would have done same...then you are a murderer!...and you have betrayed you oath, you should rather be a butcher!

To tell you what I've contributed, I've donated blood free...the number of times of which I've lost count, and each time, I believe I'm saving someone's life...even through my NYSC, at the rigours of camp...I still donated blood

Now, imagine you bunch on heartless doctors telling a dying patient money first before treatment and you can still have the mind and conscience to defend his action?...May God Never Ever Forgive You!

shame on you again, murderer!

So pathetic. Being a Doctor is more of a calling than a profession. Op as much as you showed emphaty about the victims you could have done better. Sincerely the sanctity of human lives is so paramount and irreplaceable. Please next time just try your best to save that life....no matter the bottleneck. God bless!
that is why it is very difficult to get admission into medical schools in developed countries. having good grades it just a prerequisite. The selection interview is the toughest. What's your point? Can a dead person be 'bitter'? And how would you, for comparison, determine the degree of 'bitterness' of the fiance?? If indeed he's bitter at all.
I hope you are not limiting every human experience to science. The dead could indeed be bitter. As for the fiances bitterness, you do the calculation yourself. Something you cherish and have hoped for, for many months, then just 3days to the D day she died without even saying goodbye to you.

I have read through your writeup severally and I am a bit disappointed with you.

The whole turn of events is really painful, but as a doctor you need to be careful cos if anyone decides to take this to litigation, trust me you will be the first to go down.

You obviously just lost your first patients and the bitter truth is that you may likely lose more even under worse scenario. Your duty as a doctor is to do your utmost best and move on.

Coming online to display your emotional fragility and indict your superior is ethically wrong.

The current concept is saving patient's life first regardless of the cause of the accident, other things will follow. Doc, you should always strive to give your best, but know that no matter how much you try, you cannot exceed what has been destined for your patients. Always make sure you exhaust every human possible means, albeit within medical ethics to assist your patient. Always imagine that you are the patient you are treating; They are involved in accidents, you can equally be in their situation; they can be afflicted with cancer, what says you can't have same..........Always imagine you are the patient you are treating...

Now that's the greed
. They bluntly refuse to improve the health sector.. I once had the opportunity to help a lady who had an asthmatic attack.. We took her to the nearest hospital and they said they didn't have drugs the only thing they managed to do was force a lady still on asthmatic attack to drink glucose and dissolved paracetamol.. Is that the change we voted for?

Immediate referral is a huge way of handling emergencies.
Based on your descriptions, the police should have immediately taken all patients to FMC where they have greater chances of survival.

Please I do not mean to blame you but I will say the following in case of the future:

In such emergency situation, physically going out to buy recharge card or call other doctors who MAY NOT be on duty at the time will only waste the little time such patients have to survive. Resuscitation protocols says you should call for help WHILE ATTENDING TO THE PATIENT.

It is unfortunate but based on your details, your centre did not have enough personnel or logistics to handle the situation at that moment.
The police need more enlightenment concerning the proper/best hospital to refer certain categories of trauma patients.

Another issue is the manner our health system is set up. The issue of payment keeps rearing its ugly head( although in this case, the patients were better of referred to a higher centre).

We need every citizen to be covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.
If every citizen of this country had a health insurance as matter of policy, the issue of paying before treatment in emergency cases will cease to exist even in private hospitals.

Go read my first post on this topic and stop being emotional. There is a problem in our Health sector and I have offered what I think is the solution. if you cry online from now till 2026,nothing will change and I will still sleep well at night.

Most of our medical personnel have continued to exhibit this carefree attitude over the years...instead of the young Dr to resuscitate the dying patients, he was busy making phone calls to his superior, it's really disappointing and disheartening that we found ourselves in such a country where some medical personnel abandon their duties only to become CALL CENTRE AGENTS when they are supposed to first of all attend to patients in EMERGENCY situations #Sad

That's what you get, when you have majority of people choosing to go into a profession, just because it's lucrative not because the really love the act of saving lives.

I remember a day i was in the waiting room of a government hospital and an accident victim was brought to the hospital,

None of the nurses or porters gave a damn, the guys that brought the guy had to come into the reception area,
Look for a wheelchair, and pushed the injured guy to the accident ward,

While the nurses looked on unconcerned
how exactly is being a doctor lucrative?
