And some retards would blame the Buhari's government. VISAFONE did not aggressively fight to keep its market share in the Data market.. neither did they rebrand to the present realities of the Nigerian telcos market

Amazing how this happened to Visafone. Maybe because CDMA technology is not keeping up with GSM?

The problem is not Buhari....it is the fact that Visafone is not an adaptive company.

The downfall was a long time coming.

It is like HITV vs DSTV. HITV= not adaptive. DSTV=adaptive.

Some nigerians can be so silly and too quick to blame anyone for their headache. Visafone would have died a natural death like the rest cdma networks like starcomms. Reltel, multilinks. The only reason it held on for so long was probably because it had a major financier in zenith bank. My second line was visafone, my first modem was a visafone modem. Globally, telcos dont dig cdma technology, especially for voice communication.

So you are blaming Bubu for a problem that started long before he came into office.

CDMA companies in Nigeria have been having problems for ages.

However, it’s the CDMA who’s ultimately responsible for their troubles with widespread corporate mismanagement, including, but not limited to its non-compliance with laid down internal controls and operation procedures, biased recruitment exercises and general lack luster management practices.

These issues alone are bad enough, however, to make matters worse over the years CDMA operators have regularly and consciously ignored sustained and systematic red flags as their promoters and managers diverted funds meant for expansion into frivolous projects like manufacturing, oil and gas, elections, just to name a few.

The misappropriation of funds and inability of unified license holders to roll out services has not helped matters, fueling subscribers’ preference toward GSM services.

Due to these poor business practices and mishandling of funds some CDMA companies are already dead and decomposing, those remaining have reportedly axed large chunks of their workforce due to their hemorrhaging finances.(Sauce)

And the PDP government that you people love was responsible for some of the policies that hamstrung CDMA companies/providers like Visafone..

Faced with the reality of a crumbling business, the CDMA operators were quick to blame government’s licensing policy, which initially gave the CDMA operators regional-based licences for their woes. This, they said, had been a cog in the wheel of their spread, whereas their GSM counterparts upon entry in 2001 were issued open license to operate anywhere across the country.

According to a Deputy General Manager, Marketing and Strategy, Visafone, Mr. Cliford Onyeike, the harsh licensing policy of the government made it impossible for the earliest CDMA operators to have a good spread in the country. And this gave the GSM operators ample opportunity to overtake them upon their arrival.

He argued further, “It is the CDMAs, which took the first step to empower the man on the street and not Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), but When CDMA licences were given by the Nigerian Communications Commission, they were regional licences. An operator given a licence to cover Enugu only covered Enugu specifically. It was in 2007 when universal licences were given that CDMAs were able to broaden their coverage. At that time, GSM had gained ground. We lost about eight years of advancement; GSM prevailed and ruled the luxury market,” Onyeike had lamented.

Some telecom experts have also blamed the challenges on the exclusivity rights given to GSM operators by the NCC, which allowed them to operate for five years before the regulator could licence other operators, some blamed it on fierce and unhealthy competition between GSM and CDMA operators, which largely affected their interconnect rate agreement. Another angle was the three year pioneer status granted the GSM operators which exempted them from paying certain taxes and levies for importation of telecom equipment into the country.(Sauce)

Sorry PDP members...but if you want to blame someone....blame your dear darling PDP and the CDMA companies......not Buhari.

And as this article puts it....

One would think the with the relative cheap rates, CDMA’s will be very popular amongst the poor and those in the rural areas. But there lies the problem. CDMA networks I believe haven’t done much to penetrate the vast hinterland of Nigeria. They had mostly restricted themselves to major cities in the country thereby loosing major grounds when GSM operators were busing building cell sites around the country.

Sigh.

So it is Buhari's fault that a company like Visafone is poorly managed?

Visafone....like most CDMA providers in Nigeria....made mistakes in the past that cost them dearly. Like not expanding into the rural areas....whlile GSM providers did.

Visafone also were restricted by the way they were licensed....initially they were restricted to certain regions of the country....while GSM operators were allowed to roll out across the country. And it was the PDP govt of Obasanjo that was responsible for that mess....and your hero GEJ did zero....about it.

I know some of you don't like Bubu...and yes he needs to sit up....but to blame him for Visafone's collapse....which was self inflicted...is taking it too far.
