Death Cargo! 6,000 tonnes of poisonous rice head for Nigeria …NSA raises alarm
By ALEX AKAO

Friday, June 19, 2009
All relevant security agencies in the country’s border routes and seaports have been placed on the red alert to watch out for a shipment of about 6,000 tonnes of poisonous rice believed to be on its way to Nigeria from Freetown, the Sierra Leonean capital.

http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jun/19/504.html

The worrisome discovery was made recently through intelligence reports from the office of the nation’s National Security Adviser (NAS), indicating that the consignment of the contaminated product may arrive soon. It is not immediately clear if the importers are bringing in the products through the roads or sea.

Already, all officials of the Nigeria Customs Service, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), the National Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) as well as the Ports Health Control, have been directed to maintain extra vigilance at their duty posts to ensure that the unwholesome edible food items are promptly impounded on arrival.

The warning to the security agencies to that effect is contained in a circular from the office of the NAS, captioned, “Freetown: Plans Underway to Divert Contaminated Rice to Nigeria” with reference number NSA/C/352/S dated June 3, 2009 and signed by Akingbolasan, S.A.

The memo, which was also copied to the Controller-General of Customs, indicated that those behind the expected shipment were Nigerian businessmen, who had indicated interest to buy the products earlier rejected by the Sierra Leonean authorities on account of its being unsafe for human consumption.

Although details of the shipment remains sketchy as at press time, Daily Sun reliably gathered that the products were part of food aids to the war-torn country from Asia. The products were said to have encountered delay during transit as a result of sea storm, thereby becoming contaminated.

The Sierra Leonean authorities were said to have carried out tests on them, which proved that the rice was no longer fit for human consumption, before they were approached by the unscrupulous Nigerian businessmen who offered to buy them for shipment to their country.

“While the situation is being monitored, the Organization is being alerted of this development in order to safeguard Nigerian consumers,” the circular stated.

Checks conducted by Daily Sun at some of the customs formations in Lagos indicated that the officers had been put on round-the-clock watch for possible interception of the products on arrival.

Specifically, the Marine Units of the service are said to have been warned on the need to keep extra vigilance on the waterways following unconfirmed reports that the importers may have got wind of the red alert.

Now, this is scary. But why on earth did the FG go public with this? I expect they should have nipped this quietly. They have only succeeded in letting the depraved importers smuggle in the goods in via other means.

Damn! I'm getting sick and tired of this country every day!

A responsible government has a duty to go public about this.

We as citizens have a right to be informed of any threat to our lives, no matter the financial cost to any business man

The INSINCERITY and WICKEDNESS of these government and its penchant for "noise-making" is on display again!

Pardon me but it is STUPID to tell a thief that the Police has laid ambush for him at the end of 3rd Mainland bridge, he will simply pass other routes like the Eko Bridge or lekki-Maroko axis! shocked

Since they had this much information about the shipment, that means they know:
1. Country of origin
2. The shipping Port in Sierra leone
3. Based on the 1. & 2. above, they can easily get the conveying Ship's 'details' like destination Port in Nigeria, and all the shipping documents
4. Based on 3., they can get the name of the Nigerian Business men involved and their addresses
5. Based on 4., they can pick-up the agent of death, here in Nigeria or even in Sierra leone
6. Using the Nigerian Navy and International Maritime technology, the ship can be impounded once it enters Nigerian waters or boarded even in international waters AND SUNK IMMEDIATELY.

But as usual, our empty-headed and inept leaders, haven probably primed themselves for the "BRIBE" that would be paid on account of these noise making, are getting themselves a ready-made excuse - WE RAISED THE ALARM O!- when Nigerians start dieing of the poisonous rice!

Imagine, this breach of 'information security', coming from the National Security Organization? In other countries, they would be sacked or forced to resign.
Remember recently, about a month ago when the Metropolitan Police Commissioner in U.K "unknowingly exposed" a file for an operation they were supposed to carry out, by displaying the contents of a page of the file, clutched to his chest? He resigned the next day.
End of story

His "Nigerian version" would probably think he has earned enough credentials to become the next President of the country!, slowpoke!!

Now that everyone is aware, the ship will berth on the high seas, the business men will bring the rice in, in trickles, using small boats and other "Nigerian business men" will buy it at #3,000/bag and sell at #10,000/bag!

All "business men" will be happy and Nigerians will die or be deformed in their millions ! cry

Is this "how brilliant" our own FBI/CIA is? SHAME

Why are we Nigerians very EVIL BY NATURE?

if it is to arrest and torture innocent students and protesters or to burn, kill and rape in the Niger Delta, dem go sabi that one  shocked

Now, l hope you see why the foreign Visa offices are always jam-packed?

You 've said it all!

The truth is, the alarm is been raised because the "un-named businessmen" refused to agree to their terms, probably not agreeing to the amount they wanted as bribe. nothing more!
Anyhow sha, this is not the first time and it is not going to be the last, I can remember the killer beans era, how did that one happen, and how did it end? Anyways, I agree with Tudor,

@lastpage, ur analysis is spot on, the guys in charge of naija are basically numb-skulls.
For all we know it might be a ploy to push up the cost of rice,

But if this is true, then it is blood money at its highest, at least one person who is related to the business men will also eat the rice, that thought alone should make such people think again, but not in naija, they will rather contribute to the deceased burial,

God help us all

I agree with you. This is a matter of National Security and shouldn't have been made public. In fact by alerting the public as they claim, they have done nothing but raise the alert message to "RED" which is not advisable.
